I used to be a big fan of KiA and even liked some of the mods but ever since Hat started crying about quitting it has been all "Listen And Believe" to the mods.

If I'm not mistaken, it's a logarithmic scale, the first 10 votes weight the same as the next 100, that weight the same as the next 1000. So if there's a bunch of negative votes among the first ones, the post guaranteed to not reach the front page of the sub.

Normal thread which isn't brigaded 10 people upvote in a short amount of time and it reaches the front of posters who don't browse new. And it gains more upvotes simply cause of that.
If 10 people downvote it you need 20 to get to the same point. And you do not manage that in the same time as the other post. Thus +10 is reached in a longer timeframe and thus doesn't reach the front page of non /new/ posters. At some point it falls down from the first page of /new/ and no votes take place anymore.
