UPDATE: It's announced that Source 2 will NOT require the devs to pay a license fee if they release their game on Steam! However you're not limited to release it on Valve's platform, although you may need to acquire a license for that.

What about a nice thread for HL1 mods? I'll start with two recent ones I loved (Around 2012, which is recent in HL modding).

One is The Trap, it plays kind of like Portal, but the focus is completely different, it has different puzzle elements, and the execution is flawless.
Highly recommended for anyone into both HL and Puzzles.

The other one is Hazardous Course 2, which is the best HL mod I've ever played without a doubt. Don't let the name fool you, it's not just a hazard course, it's an EXTREME version of the original course in every single way conceivable. Absurdly big, balls to the wall hard, full of secrets, the best level design I've ever seen in GoldScr by a huge margin.
Definitely a must play for anyone looking for the ultimate Half-Life challenge.

PS: You can find all the secrets in any order so you don't have to worry about forgetting some, you will see what I mean, it's part of the marvelous level design.
Also the mod has some bugs, which might be frustrating, one of them is in the train section, if the train gets stuck you have to save and load, it's rare but it may happen.

This is an idea that's been around my mind while ago. I wonder if there are people here willing to create our own mod, doesn't matter the engine, we can use Source, GoldSource or heck, even Source 2 when it's out.

Nothing serious about it (we ain't gonna create Arrangement Mod or Black Mesa Source), the thing is to create and hopefully, complete it and release to the public. We would brainstorming ideas of what would be the mod about, things like settings, looking a guy who can write the script, looking a mapper, and a coder, etc.

Personally, I'm a bit familiarized with each area in the engine, I know how to edit the HUD, monsters and weapons in the Half-Life source code. How to edit models, knowing subgroups, events, skins and bone controllers. And how to map, things like entities, brushwork, etc. I also know how to edit menus in GoldSource. I'm not familiarized yet with the Source features but I'm learning.

Headcrabs can get into little ducts. Bullsquids can't jump but can get under most things. Grunts just go trough the bigger paths, might be able to break stuff. Houndeyes can jump around and get into most places. Slaves are kind of like a human, etc.

Why must this game be the most frustrating of all Source games to host a dedicated server for? None of the other Source games or mods piss me off as much as this game's dedi stuff does.

Just tried these and mucking with the command line arguments. I'm not seeing a log being written anywhere in the game's directory so I'm unsure what's happening. Listen works fine, dedicated does not.

If you want to be a special snowflake, your PC isn't made for more powerful engines, or just for the sake of it, you can still create awesome stuff in Valve's Older Engine. Although it is recommended to use Source instead, I ain't going to stop you.

Ignore all the "Half-Life SDK" packages that are all around the web, that shit is outdated. Get this instead.

The latest Engine Update made it compatible with Linux and Mac.

If you want to map you can use either the Classic VHE, Sledge Editor, or Jackhammer. My personal choice is Sledge but it's up to you.

Reminder that Sven Coop 5.0 will come out with full scripting capabilities and hugely improved standalone engine.
There is a chance whatever you want to make will be easier to do in Sven Co-op. Since it will be free to play you will have a bigger audience.

No, actually they are around the same. He also optimized the tools a lot and simplified the process, maps that were too big/complex and took longer to compile (Or even crashed) now compile faster.
