The only downside (if my English books from school are anything to go by) is, that books for foreign speakers often gloss over the more complicated topics (e.g. my English books never explained using do in an affirmative sentence), resulting in greater difficulty to understand speech patterns that deviate from the standard structure they provide.
Yeah, it can be a bit overwhelming getting back to where one was, but it's easier since one already went through everything once.
