A mistake you're making here is bundling trans people up into one type. Transgender and transsexual are two different things. Transgender is this social construct thing that we talk about. Identifying as something other than the sex you are. Transsexual refers to people who have transitioned to the opposite sex because we've deemed they do have a terrible mess up in their head and the way to treat it best would be transition. If it were simple mental confusion it should be treatable by therapy and methods other than transition, but the medical community realizes transsexuals have something more going on (However they're not sure what exactly is happening that causes it), and found the best treatment will be a combination of therapy and transition. As for gay people being messed up in the head, I have not done enough research on if being gay or a sexual deviant should be considered an illness, but if I'm to think that Humans need to be attracted to each other enough to have sex and reproduce to carry on their genes like any other being, then yes I'd classify it as some form of illness, currently untreatable. But like I said, I haven't done my research into that topic, so I don't really sway one way or the other on it.
