So there has been a lot of issues with fans involving the stopping power of the bowcaster vs Kylo Ren. Whereas it was shown to knock back stormtroopers in one hit, and effectively have one-shot kills, it merely made Kylo bleed a lot, and wound him.

I believe, however, that there is a justifiable explanation besides plot armor: namely, his ability to stop blaster bolts.

In the first part of the film, he is shown to be able to stop Poe's blaster bolt in mid-air. He later does this again, during the raid on Maz Kanata's castle. I believe that it is possible, and believable, that he could have attempted to do this to Chewbacca's bowcaster bolt inside the Starkiller base, but due to his complicated emotional state, mistimed it, and merely slowed it down to a point where it didn't cause a lethal sound.

That's my explanation. What do you think?

 No.10084

don't give a shit. It was supposed to make his loss against Mary Sue believable. But she still had NEVER HELD A LIGHTSABER BEFORE IN HER LIFE.

even wounded, it makes no sense.

You're explanation why it didn't kill him instantly is fun and all, but nobody really cares. Its the same bullshit reason as to why Finn wasn't instantly eaten by the roll-poly octo-carnivores. Plot armor. and we know it

>NEVER HELD A LIGHTSABER BEFORE IN HER LIFE

I used to think like that too, then I remembered this isn't the first time it's happened. Kyle Katarn up and grabbed a lightsaber and went on a massacre, which included seven Dark Jedi.

>>10118

not only that, but like how katarn got his force powers from the valley of the jedi, rey basically gets her force powers from the saber. also in jedi academy, the scepter of marka ragnos has force energy stored in it that can be given to people.

guys, what if rey wasn't actually a jedi to begin with or just like level 1, but touching the saber basically gave her a 10 level jump?

for a movie that has the balls to use this as a line, they sure seem to disregard the rules when its convenient…

What bothers me the most is how he stops a fucking laser in midair.

 No.10146

Nothing can ever explain how Kylo Ren got wounded by Fin; a non-force using pleb.

The very fact that the force gives you precognition during a fight should have instantly allowed Kylo to kill Fin in the first few clashes.

 No.10147

Its called stasis. Its a force power taken from the extended universe. I remember using it in the Knights of the old Republic game.

Katarn is a shit character

>>10146

Even worse is that Finn got his ass kicked by that random Stormtrooper

Therefore, Kylo Ren is weaker than a Stormtrooper

 No.10158

I'm thinking it's more like in ESB where Han shoots Vader and he basically just absorbed the shots- you could argue that his robo-hand is laserproof and he just blocked them, but one of the EU books (the first Corran Horn one I think) has Luke confirm that Vader did use the force to neutralize the shots, absorbing the energy into himself and grounding it out like a lightning rod. I think Kylo didn't have the mental focus for stasis so he tried to do that instead, just either he failed because he's Kylo and he sucks or he did everything right and the bowcaster was just too OP to handle so he exploded a little.

Not just any stormtrooper, it was a scared janitor.

 No.10165

The saber belonged to both Anakin and Luke so immediately it has strong connections with the force. Its possible by the end of the fight she channels the force to direct the saber in a short burst to overpower Kylo.

Answering OP's question: In Battlefront you can charge the Bowcaster while playing the Wookies and Chewie. Instead of basically firing a strong scatter shot, Chewie is seen aiming it at Kylo for quite sometime, possibly charging it up for one armor piercing shot sniping into Kylo's side. You can also notice that there are multiple scopes on the Bowcaster implying it has quite a significant range instead of a close-quarters fan-shaped-shot.

what's also funny is in george's head, everyone was technically force-sensitive (hence energy that is in all living things and holds the universe together, and the midichlorian thing is just a power level counter) and with the proper time and training could become a jedi. so hello retcons.

 No.10185

But didn't Stasis, y'know, freeze PEOPLE? I don't recall ever using it to stop blaster bolts mid-air.

 No.10188

>>10185

This. Its only supposed to work on humans. It would've been easier just to just block it like Vader did.

 No.10195

Did you forget? She used the force to overpower him. She may have even used it to take some of Ren's lightsaber training knowledge. He did say "You need a trainer" before she did it.

Kylo was surprised when Chewie shot him

 No.10421

>Kylo Ren is described as a “fearful man, a large burn scar slashed across his face,” in the final duel with Rey. But he has a moment of weakness earlier in the movie, immediately after he kills his father. Ren is horrified after killing Han Solo.

>"Kylo Ren is somehow WEAKENED by this wicked act,” the script reads. His “shock” is broken only when Chewbacca cries out.

There's no debate needed the script and film show this clearly.

Is it just me or is it stupid that JJ said that this guy is in no way a sith despite meeting all the requirements just because "to not break the prophecy"?

Remember the EU when only Wookiees and larger aliens could use the bowcaster because of the sheer strength required to use it.

Jedi Knight is a videogame though.

Dark Forces is better anyways, both story and gameplay-wise

 No.10480

>>10467

that's quite a hipster opinion you have there. dark forces has good gameplay i'll give you that, but df2 adds the saber and jedi shit to give it a new dimension of thought.

furthermore, df's story is pretty basic.

>>10439

the sith are just a faction of dark force users, and kylo ren doesn't have darth in his name (he leads the knights of ren, who are a new faction of dark force users presumably), ergo he is not sith, and neither is snoke.

>a new dimension of thought.

Jedi Knight adds more than that, but with respect to the Jedi shit, you might as well have made Han a Jedi. I'll grant that the saber and Force gameplay were fun and bound to get a handful of games showing it off, but turning an already established badass merc into a Jedi is a lame contrivance.

>furthermore, df's story is pretty basic.

It's basically awesome. Kyle spends the game going toe-to-toe with Stormtroopers, Terminators and dragons with everything from a fusion cutter to his bare fucking fists. No lightsaber required. The music's better too, since they gave enough of a damn to create original tracks like the main theme and intersplice it with the familiar John Williams tracks.

 No.10497

>they sure seem to disregard the rules when its convenient

I don't think they got a single thing right about the force besides "energy that binds everything". You know that Lucas never mentioned "Light side" of the force in episodes I-VI? He made certain of it . Yet, VII wouldn't shut up about "the only fight that matters, the Light side versus the Dark side".

 No.10499

>>10487

This tbh fam

Kylo was shaping up to be really fucking cool. Honestly he was gonna be the best of the new crop of characters, even if he's dollar store Jacen Solo. He seems to have high force potential and his character arc could go either way at this point. He was just the victim of supremely shitty writing in the last scene. A scene that probably robbed our main villain of any menace he would have for the next two movies.

 No.10502

>>10421

>"Kylo Ren is somehow WEAKENED by this wicked act,” the script reads. His “shock” is broken only when Chewbacca cries out.

that isn't how the fucking dark side works. He should have been even darker and more focused after murdering his father. ex. Anakin became immersed in the dark side and got more powerful after massacring the jedi temple.

anakin had a noble goal, saving padme's life. all ren wants is to become stronger than vader.

So much this; I thought Star Wars couldn't get any more black and white but they did it. I cringed when a man who 30 years prior said "hokey religions and ancient weapons are no match for a good blaster at your side" suddenly embraces the Force and Jedi.

Also, here's to hoping we see some new (or at least more usage of) Force powers in the next two films.

Kylo Ren struggles to stay with the dark side. In one scene he tries to resist the light side and to stay with the dark side.

> In one scene he tries to resist the light side and to stay with the dark side.

when he bitches to Vaders helment that muh lightside is pulling me grandfather, show me the darkness.

Please that scene was utter trash. Ordered the massacre of the villages at Dakku, murdered Luke's students, killed his dad. What 'light side' pull did he have? He never spared anyone, and didn't show a hint of kindness. It was shit tier writing to just say 'muh lightside pull'

Vader spared his son several times, he tried to save Padme, he defied and killed the Emperor, THOSE are hints of the light side. Not having an emo shitfest and bitching that you feel you might be a 'good guy'

 No.10699

Completely agree

TFA had the worst writing by any SW movie by far. It pains me to see people try to make sense of it when nothing makes sense
