I am not the most well-versed in the EU. Can someone explain the rationale behind the Sith Rule of Two to me? Seems kind of counterintuitive to cripple your numbers when your goal is to overthrow the massive and supremely powerful police force of the galaxy.

I will concede that there is a certain elegance to the provision that a Sith must be constantly prepared to kill his Apprentice/Master, and alert that the reverse may happen, such that only the strongest, smartest and most brutal Sith can live to spread his teachings. Very fitting for an order which gets their power to use the Force from hate.

When there's a lot of Sith, they bicker and try to kill each other.

It's also easier to hide two people than it is an empire.

pretty much this, being a smaller order makes their numbers much easier to conceal. this is why darth krayt was a moron for creating the rule of one, it essentially brought back the brotherhood of darkness and everyone started killing each other again.

tl;dr bane is love, bane is life.

Plus the much simpler reason, which is throughout history the Jedi always find a way to win in fights of raw power (somehow), so Bane thought the next best bet was subtlety and deception.

Everything said in this thread is pretty much correct- in addition, the Rule of Two forced the Sith to "evolve" as it were- when the apprentice learned everything he could from the master, he tried to kill the master, and whoever was the stronger Sith won. They went on to expand their knowledge of the Dark side of the Force, collect an apprentice of their own, and start the cycle over again, with the new Sith in question becoming more powerful than the last. This ultimately culminated in Sidious who is, in the canon, supposed to be the most powerful Sith lord- possibly Force user- there has ever been. In fact, IIRC, because he was so powerful, he discarded the Rule of Two in favor of the Rule of One- the One, being himself, as he never had an intention to take on a "worthy" apprentice, deigning only to take on lesser servants like Maul and Vader.

What I'm wondering is why a sith master would like to get an apprentice, what do they gain out of it? I mean except for a shanking once they've taught their student all they know.

For starters, during the entirety of their apprenticeship they get a…I think the term is "Dark Hand", to send on missions at their convenience. Power for power's sake is largely pointless. What's a Sith Lord going to do? Accumulate as much knowledge as they can and just…what? Carve our a little kingdom in the Unknown Regions, and die? Or get an apprentice, train them in all that they know, pass on their philosophy and their skills, so that they can have a hand in, eventually, destroying the Jedi? Which is the whole point of the Rule of Two.

to be fair the brotherhood were retards

Because their focus changed from "outright, manu military conquest" (Remember what Bane said about Khan "Deploying air forces… flanking armies… you are thinking like a dirt general, not a Sith") to inflitration, subterfuge, corruption.

>your numbers when your goal is to overthrow the massive and supremely powerful police force of the galaxy.

They tamed, or so believed, the Dark Side. With the Force under their control, they believed they could do anything. "The hability to destroy a planet is insignificant, next to the power of the Force"

>as he never had an intention to take on a "worthy" apprentice, deigning only to take on lesser servants like Maul and Vader.

Nope. Darth Vader, pre-Mustafar, was his wet dream, the one who made him wet his panties. And even sometime after Vader was put into the suit Sidious thought that he could reawaken his power.

"Fundamental to Vader's growth was the desire to overthrow his Master. Had Vader killed Obi-Wan on Mustafar, he might gave attempted to kill Sidious, as well. In fact, Sidious would have been surprised if Anakin hadn't made an attempt. Now, however, incapable of so much as breathing on his own, Vader could not rise to the challenge, and Sidious understood that he would need to do everything in his power to shake Vader out of his despair, and reawaken the incredible power within him. Even at Sidious's own peril…"
