WARNING, BIM TUCKLEY WALL OF WORDS
It's just a draft of my opinion, if you get assblasted, it's your fault for being a crybaby
I'm just pouring myself out quickly before going to bed
TL;DR at the end if you're too lazy
It's entertaining and it has some quality and effort (even though it has its flaws), but it is far too "Capeshit"-ish to me to fully enjoy.
In the end it's an allright movie, but a mediocre star wars episodic. Better than the prequels as a movie, but so different that the prequels in the end feel more Star Wars-y than TFA is (despite it's primary objective trying to look like Daddy OT)
My biggest gripe with the MOVIE (Not disney) is how the fanbase turned out.
Star Wars was that kind of thing whose threshold between geek chic culture and genuine geek culture was massively blurred, if not pushed back thanks to the Extended Universe. Even if you had a doctorate in history of the Yuuzhan Vong War, shit like a t-shirt bought at walmart was nothing more than a simple act of laziness or a guilty pleasure, Star Wars catered primarily to the biggest fans but was still enjoyable for newcomers.
This new star wars despite being so similar to the OT ended up being too accessible to newcomers for me to relate to as a genuine Star Wars movie. As I mentionned earlier, it looks like Star Wars, and tries to feel like star wars, but it lacks the wisdom and serenity the OT, -and fucking hell- some parts of the prequels had.
A lot of it was merely references, other parts were copy-pasted story elements. The structure of this film feels so weak to me, it actually makes me want to dig though the Prequels in detail once again.
This new Star Wars episode feels like Tumblrite entertainment, all show and fireworks like a purebred Marvel capeshit movie, but none of the substance.
A relative of mine who is very active on tumblr and a massive Marvel fan for instance claimed The Force Awakens was by far the best Star Wars movie, consider also she thinks Terminator 1 is (and I strictly quote) "absolute dogshit", but Genisys was fast paced, entertaining and probably the best of the series
The flagrant accusations à-la Plinkett about the Prequels being just all show and no guts is in my opinion applicable in The Force Awakens, but at least tries to cover it up.
I don't mind the characters, I don't mind what color or what gender my characters are, the protags are allright (excepted Rey ending up a complete Mary-Sue later in the movie) and Kylo Ren was -For better or for worse- a show stealer (I understand why you guys hate this kind of Loki 2.0 (thanks Felix) but his Tantrums were very fun to watch in my opinion.)
That said, it was an experience i've been waiting since May of 2005, I've waited for this movie for 10 years, the hype was real and I won't deny I had (I do weight my words) the time of my life. But now looking at it, I'll be very cynical and probably won't be enjoying my second viewing, I ended up after a few days of reflexion worried and sad about how much Star Wars changed, about the obnoxious loud Tumblrite fandom crying victory for Phasma being thrown in the trash as a "strong independant character" or Rey's Overpoweredness being "Normal", I am tired of all these fucking comics that think of themselves as witty but just end up forgetting major movie plot elements. I am beyond sick of all those self proclaimmed super hardcore star wars fans who don't know what "KOTOR" means, I am sad because the fuel of one of my longest living and most burning passions has changed into something that doesn't please me, something I do not want to fake in order to enjoy, something that doesn't feel worth giving your time for.
In summary (TL;DR), when people ask me about TFA since I'm "lol that grumpy EU 1.0 Star Wars Nerd", I say it's allright. The movie wasn't that bad, but it could have been better. At the end of the day, what really wants me to change my lifestyle into a disgusting neet and lead an international Beta Uprising is not what the movie IS, but what this movie COSTED (+30 years of EU) and GAVE US (More questions than answers, a terrible fanbase and DARE I SAY, A dumbing down of something already pretty simple).
