The space warrior appears in Star Wars: Aftermath, which bridges the gap between Return of the Jedi and new film The Force Awakens.

Sinjir, an Imperial turncoat who now serves in Luke Skywalker’s Rebellion, is the first major gay role to be part of the Star Wars universe.

Chuck Wendig, author of Star Wars: Aftermath, said: "I don’t think his sexuality needs to be this giant plot point. At the same time, it’s part of who he is.

"Especially since you don’t necessarily see it as much – not just in Star Wars but just in science fiction.

"Comics are just starting to figure out that they exist in the world."

Sinjir reveals his sexuality to female bounty hunter Jas Emari, who tries to chat him up.

The book features another gay character, Norra Wexley.

The novel has so far received mixed reviews, with games website IGN giving it 5.9 out of 10.

It describes Sinjir as someone who "rarely gets the chance to shine".

Her lesbian orientation is only mentioned in a little paragraph in the latter quarter of the novel explaining how she lapsed into unprofessional hedonism. It was out of grief for a woman that was important to her. Honestly it could have been her sister were it not confirmed by author interviews that they were romantically involved. It's never brought up again and has next to no bearing on the character or the book's plot.

I suppose it doesn't count unless the tokenism is loud enough.

The concept was good, the execution was just complete trash. I mean it read like a bottom tier Goosebumps book, just with the most cringely described blood and gore of all time thrown in on top. They way they threw in Han and Chewbacca toward the middle out of nowhere, because none of the other characters in the book were capable of carrying it was ridiculous. Nevermind that it was an absolutely pathetic and horribly written take on their characters as well.

I'll concede though that Deathtroopers was just some random thing approved by Lucas Licensing in an era where Star Wars was going nowhere and nobody gave a shit anymore. Aftermath should have been taken much more seriously seeing as it was the first novel in the new canon and everything, but it was handed with the same amount of care that everything a few years post PT was.
