There's nothing really special about the Lightsaber Obi Wan gave Luke. Anakin lost his first saber on Genosis then built a new one that he used during the Clone Wars. Sabers seemed pretty disposable in the prequels and in the OT Luke just made a replacement.

Now with Force Awakens Anakin's second Lightsaber plays an important role as it somehow travels from Bespin to Jakku. Doesn't make much sense.

 No.6441

because they can't write a proper SW story for shit, and decided to do whatever they thought the common crowd would like

 No.6442

I always though R2 and the Falcon had the force, but midichlorians killed all that. So there's no conceivable reason why Luke's lightsaber would be any more significant that a dropped blaster or any other tool.

 No.6467

Force Awakens seem to be taking influence from Western mythology.

Luke's old lightsaber is now some type of Excalibur.

 No.6468

JJ's Star Trek was full of inconsistencies and absurd coincidences. I'm interested in how they explain the voyage of Luke's lightsaber because it seemed unrecoverable at the end of ESB.

Did Luke go looking for it and not find it?

Did Vader pick it up somehow?

Did scrap merchants find it or something?

Did it fall through a wormhole?

Will JJ even answer the question?

You're thinking too much.

If we were logical about this, ,we would see that the light saber is pretty much just a cutting tool and in a high tech world, you can get one easy as pie.

But sense.. Star Wars is trying to tap into mysticism,, the light saber gets invested with all the meanings and value of sword.

Back in the iron age, a sword was a big deal. (sure it's just a cutting tool) but it's a very difficult to make cutting tool, and due to them being made by craftsmen they were not interchangeable mass produced things.

So for story telling, that light saber becomes a sacred relic or some shit.

>>6442

Maybe the Disney reboot will forget about the midichlorians.. (They sucked any way)

 No.6472

>>6467

They tried to make Anakin space Jesus.. (and failed) His mother gave birth to him without getting laid.

Maybe they'll trot that out again, and have Vadar rise from the grave. (not that he has a grave)

 No.6491

>>6468

the movie starts with the saber tumbling through space to jakku

let's not forget that due to the laws of physics and such, the lightsaber should still be on bespin, either at the bottom of the turbine on cloud city, or bespin's core

also, the fucking thing would burn up in the atmosphere. so yeah, the entire film is fan-fiction.

 No.6495

>>6491

physics in star wars?

Never.

 No.6496

>>6431

OP I don't understand why you think this is fucking hard. Knights of Ren are Vader Fanboys. Obviously they figured out that Vader was Anakin Skywalker.

They want his fucking saber, end of story.

 No.6511

>obi wan gives luke the lightsaber that killed a bunch of kids

could have been easily fixed by having Anakin using a new red saber when he turned to Darth Vader.

god damn Lucas.

 No.6513

>>6511

Jesus..

You act as if there is an actual history there.

Or if there is an actual logical story arc running through the whole mess.

It's just shit cobbled together for fucks sake.

When Lucas made the first movie, he had no fucking clue it was going to this monster pop cultural phenomenon.

It was never intended to be thought about this deeply.

 No.6516

If they do use the lightsaber falling through space without explanation, they're building a plot hole so big that people will just ignore it.

 No.6612

Didn't Anakin's second lightsaber (Luke's first) end up on Byss in the Thrawn trilogy? How'd Zahn explain that, again?

As well- there's a certain amount of mysticism in Star Wars, particularly with the Jedi, but the lightsaber is often explained as just a tool. It's something that goes on the belt, like a cop's service pistol, but with more individualization.

They're essentially just a tool largely unique to Jedi knights (if you adhere strictly to how it's shown in the OT, with Jedi and Sith masters alike seeming to forgo lightsabers, Palpatine even having some disdain for them).

the empire recovered it, along with luke's hand

the hand ended up ultimately being made into an insane clone of luke, which was killed by luke with the help of mara jade and then luke gave his/anakin's saber to mj as a gift

 No.6631

>>6624

Yeah, not keeping the EU was such a terrible idea…

 No.6635

>>6631

yeah but the empire recovering it made sense instead of "it just falls through fucking space"

 No.6675

>>6631

>Implying that series of books isn't among the cream of the crop in the EU

>Implying that the Thrawn Trilogy isn't the third trilogy we deserve

 No.6688

>>6491

Where did you get that info ?

 No.6692

>>6688

the "leaked script" from makingstarwars that keeps on turning out to be true

 No.6703

>>6692

Except that old leak didn't have anything regarding Oscar Isaac's character, making it complete bunk since he's one of the main characters.

 No.6713

>>6688

Most everything has been leaked by insiders on the set.

Only things in the dark is Snoke's role and what happens to Phasma.

 No.6769

>>6491

>would burn in atmosphere

Not necessarily. They make pretty high tech stuff there…

 No.6773

>>6769

Whether it would burn up would depend on its speed relative to the rotation of the planet. Anything traveling at orbital speed would burn up without heat protection, but the lightsaber wouldn't have been in orbit and would merely fall at terminal velocity, about 200 mph + the speed counter to the movement of the atmosphere, maybe another 900 mph or so.

It would get hot, but probably not enough to melt the rubber grips.

But the whole idea of the lightsaber falling through space is so cringeworthy that if the movie starts out that way the audience will collectively groan because it's a stupid idea and also because most people think everything burns up in the atmosphere like is made out of fire.

 No.6777

>>6773

if the movie actually starts with the lightsaber falling through space, i will shout, "what the fuck is this piece of shit?" and leave.

fuckin thing shouldn't be able to leave the planet bespin to begin with, unless it was recovered by imperials or some junker and their ship was destroyed in space and we see the saber fly as a result of that, then i would laugh and stay for the movie.

 No.6781

>>6777

Who knows ? Maybe they'll just retcon it in the EU

 No.6799

>travel one planet to another

>a non propelled artifact

>in less than a century or even higher span

Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiight. At least the old EU had some stupid wormhole shenanigans to wand wave such shit.

 No.6824

How did Kylo Ren know where to recover Darth Vader's helmet?

Wouldn't he have assumed it blew up in the Death Star?

Did he wipe out the Ewoks when he invaded Endor looking for it?

 No.6834

>>6824

>Did he wipe out the Ewoks

If he did it will be kind of like an anti-retcon. How could a full-power empire lose to Ewoks, if weak-ass first order (in comparison) can easily wipe them out? All of them?

 No.6878

>>6431

Somehow Luke's lightsaber flies to Jakku - without an explanation real fans are going to attack this. But an explanation would be clunky anyway, so this is going to suck either way.

Only Luke knows where Vader was burned. There's no way anyone else is going to assume there's something to find without Luke telling them. This might be easier to pull off than the lightsaber just showing up, but it's still clunky bullshit. And I'm sure Vader would have had several helmets on different ships - basically a change of clothes all over the galaxy so he didn't have to pack. Why not grab one of those artifacts. His boots would have more of Vader's essence (smell) than his helmet.

 No.6884

>>6834

The First Order invented flame throwers.

 No.6908

>>6878

Jakku is Tatooine, the lightsaber is just going home, where the rightful skywalker is.

 No.7026

>>6472

>His mother gave birth to him without getting laid.

Yeah but was it not implied that Plagueis or Palpatine actually impregnated her with the force? That contradicted the "immaculate conception" plot, to a degree, at least. It wasn't just a random event.

 No.7037

>>6469

>you can get one easy as pie.

Weren't only Jedi supposed to be able to make one?

 No.7084

>>7037

Yep, the notion that anyone can get a lightsaber is retarded. Only force users could create and use a lightsaber

 No.7438

>>7084

Though it's been shown that those without Force-sensitivity are capable of, essentially, reverse engineering lightsabers. This was seen with the Saber Rakes in the Tapani sector (Colonies region, stones throw from the galactic core). However, these copies were weaker (due to the shittier focusing crystals and less emphasis on excellence than what a Jedi would put when making their weapon), and they have the unfortunate habit of shutting off at the most inopportune time (In the WEG D6 Star Wars RPG, this was portrayed as, whenever you got a 1 on the wild die, the blade would flicker and fade. It took two hours and a moderate-difficulty lightsaber repair roll to fix).

 No.7439

>>7438

as far as I'm aware, the difficulties in producing a saber were

>the proper alignment and tuning would require laboratory equipment to reproduce

and

>the power cell requires a force user to charge it during construction, providing that nice "always-on" feel

 No.7444

>>7439

Which is probably why lightfoils run about 10,000 credits, and aren't as high quality as a real lightsaber.
