>tfw only just got interested in Star Wars this year right after the EU is no longer canon
Fuck it. It's my headcanon. You know what really bugs me about this? That before you could really KNOW Star Wars. Like, you could master your knowledge of Star Wars. For instance you would always hear people tell little facts and trivia about the history of R2D2 or Han Solo or the weapons the stormtroopers held, etc. Now all that history is gone. Another thing that bugs me is that even when I wasn't that into Star Wars, it was very very evident that the EU was what Star Wars was. Star Wars was books, games, comics, shows, guide books, tabletop games, and movies. Star Wars was all this media that people knew as the history of the Star Wars universe and it just seems like a really shitty move alienating 90% of your fans just so the new moviegoers don't feel compelled to read The Thrawn Trilogy. I just have this feeling like this was really not necessary at all. Really, who cares if they retcon a few books (or possibly a new era) in the new movies. So long as we have most of the other EU it's fine. And fuck that excuse that it was too 'limiting' to new directors. The Knights of Ren could have easily existed in the past of Star Wars that were just never explored. Look at what happened with the Clone Wars.
Anyways, with that rant over what's some must read/play/etc EU stuff for each era? I've already read/played Clone Wars (animated), Shadows of the Empire (book and game), Tales of the Jedi, and Dark Forces 1 and 2. And I'm reading Paradise Snare right now.
