 No.6894

Knights of the Fallen Empire early access is tomorrow.

ITT: We talk about it/SWTOR in general, what your hopes are, etc.

 No.6896

Is this stuff considered canon now?

 No.6897

>>6896

No, but it's the only major SW product in he Legends timeline still actively being updated with new content. This means that fans keep repeating the question fishing for a different answer, and rumors run cancerous that Disney wants to at least partially integrate the Revan era.

At the very least the Lando comic miniseries shows that Sheev has a dais carved in the likeness of the Sith Empire's logo from TOR.

 No.6898

>>6897

Haven't read the Lando stuff yet so that's cool.

>>6896

I think part of the reason SWTOR is introducing a whole other Empire is because they're thinking "welp, nothing we do now is canon, we can do whatever the fuck we want". Which tbh I'm okay with

 No.6899

I haven't played TOR in months.

Is it worth sitting through an infinite patch update?

It's been months since I read this and I can't find any archives, so take this with a whole shaker's worth of salt:

I remember being on /co/ or /tv/ and reading a Star Wars thread around the time the first wave of the New Canon's EU stuff was coming out in which there was an anon claiming to have insider knowledge like the guy who leaked the "Legends" purge to /co/ months in advance. He said that the Story Group is split over how to handle the Revan era of the pre-film Legends timeline. Most of the members are content to use it as a metaphorical toy box and pick neat elements to reintroduce to canon as they find need sort of like how they brought back ISB for Rebels. Many like KotOR but are just worried that bringing it back into canon would mean implicitly bringing back every other old EU referenced by the games since BioWare and Obsidian did their homework when writing the lore back then.

Among them one member is completely gay for everything from the Revan period from KotOR I to TOR and encourages bringing most or all of it back at any opportunity. Pledging to veto him at every turn is one really bitter NO FUN guy who despises the series. Why? Well, he thinks that Star Wars is a morality play and that the deconstruction and shades of grey (especially in KotOR II) was made by people who went against the spirit of the franchise by taking it away from high adventure and the struggle of good vs. evil. Anon paraphrased him as saying that KotOR and TOR would be recognized over his dead body because Sith should never be anything other than villains (TOR lets you make "light Sith") and Revan using both sides of the Force broke the rules in his mind.

> Well, he thinks that Star Wars is a morality play and that the deconstruction and shades of grey (especially in KotOR II) was made by people who went against the spirit of the franchise by taking it away from high adventure and the struggle of good vs. evil.

that's the stupidest thing I've seen all week

And this is one of the guys charged with making the new lore…

Yeah, just remove all complexity and nuance from the franchise and make yourselves for retarded 6-year-olds huh?

Honestly considering what he's said about Sith never having Force ghosts I thought it Faolini, but I don't think he's on the story group.

Actually as much as one of you guys might not wanna hear this… but I'm pretty sure it is Pablo Hidalgo. Like the above dude, take this with a whole lot of salt but I'm pretty sure he has a very black and white view on the Star Wars franchise.

As for Dave Filoni? He's not a member of the LF Story Group. He's just in control of his little area, which is Rebels.

 No.7062

>>6894

Won't play it, I absolutely despise TOR

But the cinematic trailer was awesome.

This story is the kind of shit we need as a movie or TV series, not a video game. I think we had too much great stories put in vidya and not elsewhere

>tfw no Kyle Katarn movie

>tfw no Dash Rendar TV series

>tfw I have no face

 No.7063

>>7045

It's not even EA, it's Blur Studio, third party award winning company who makes all those kickass Cinematic trailers.

 No.7710

>>6913

Well, I'm gonna rustle some jimmies, but he's…not exactly wrong. The whole philosophy behind the Order of the Sith Lords doesn't exactly mesh well with the Light side of the Force.

I will however caveat this statement with it being my personal opinion that I feel it's entirely possible for a Jedi to perhaps…walk the tightrope, but that puts them at big time risk. Therefore, I feel it's entirely reasonable for Revan, who's entire story is his alignment between the two sides of the Force acting like a fucking pendulum, to do that. Although I might be horrendously gay for Revan like that one guy

To keep this post somewhat in line with the topic- I kind have a love-hate relationship with TOR. I like the setup, and the general idea of the game in a broad scope. I like some of the pandering (specifically the races available for play). However, I genuinely despise some of the smaller details. Jedi running around in armor (not that big a deal, but I'm not too big on it). The Sith Emperor being essentially a Force God. That shit in particular pisses me off. The art design as well kinda pisses me off- why does every body have hugeass pauldrons? The weird lightsaber crystals that give the blades a black core. A few of the story decisions are a little ehh, but nothing too outrageous. If the game was little less auto-masturbatory with how it treated the PC, it'd be less annoying. Believe it or not, I'm content playing some schmuck Jedi that isn't on the Jedi Council. I'm fine playing some scheming nobody of a Sith Acolyte. I don't HAVE to be the big cheese to be satisfied.

 No.7721

>>7710

OP here, I agree with a lot of the stuff here. Vitiate is far too powerful, the art is silly but got better for the most part in KotFE I think (although not entirely fixed).

To me it's basically just a Star Wars game to play between other games and stuff

 No.7732

>>7721

I'll need to check it out. I recently got back into playing it, for boredom's sake.

 No.7737

>>7732

Now's a good time to try. Levelling up isn't as gruelling for F2P now and KotFE is definitely worth a try

 No.7767

>>7737

You got that right- I took a Jedi Knight from 1 to level 13 in a quarter of the time it took me last time I played. Fuck me.

 No.7881

>>6894

Why are Starkiller's clones in TOR?

 No.7891

A better question is why Three Dog is playing a white guy.

 No.7894

So I just checked out the game plot on youtube and I have one thing to say.

This would be so much better if TOR didn't exist.

Your party members are cool. An HK who doesn't knock off the classic, a scoundrel pilot who has a very different belief system. A jedi milf. ect. ect. The concept for this empire is so much better than the base game's "movie knockoff" aesthetic and makes them an interesting enemy faction. The locations are varied enough to be reasonably interesting while also being consistent.

But it's just constantly weighed down by the base game's stupid BS. It's basically impossible to buy these two guys who look and act nothing alike are the same emperor and it's so rarely referenced at points it may as well not be true. The game also has no real idea of how to justify your regular party not being there besides "I dunno lol, I guess they just disappeared".

 No.7948

>>7894

>>7894

while I can definitely relate to it, I also adore some of the integration that the older companions have gotten in the new story.

(Seeing how they've matured in the time you've been gone).

I will also grant you some of the points regarding the aesthetics.

But I'll just play devils advocate here:

keeping it too detached form the movies, or the previous iterations would completely alienate a large portion of the fanbase, and hurt both business and public opinion.

That being said, the one thing that irks me more than anything is Vitiate's immortality-plot.

"Quickly! We have to kill the emperor before he takes over the galaxy!"

you then proceed to murder him in the throne rome.

"Ohh no! We have to stop revan from ressurecting the emperor!"

You proceed to stop Revan. Emperor ressurects none the less.

"Ohh no! The emperor had another empire far more powerful than the sith empire!"

You proceed to murder him by stabbing/shooting him in the back and then find out that not only did he survive, but he's in your head right now.

Personally I'd have liked this Eternal Empire to be more influenced by the 300 years that Revan was imprisoned by the emperor and the two were talking to each other in stasis. But that's all water under the bridge right now.

 No.7961

>>7948

Y'know what I would have liked? And bear in mind that I kinda like the baseline set up in SWTOR, with the distinct exception of the Emperor, who's entire story read like bad Mary Sue fanfiction.

That said: Why not just roll the Sith Empire and the Eternal empire into one?

Let the Eternal empire be the Sith threat that Revan discovered in the Unknown Regions, which compelled him to obtain the Star Forge and supplant the Republic to save the Galaxy. Perhaps part of what makes Zakuul so powerful is their use of Rakata technology?

And to explain why they're attacking 300 years later instead of immediately following the two KOTOR games, well, that's how badly Revan and the Jedi Exile fucked them up.

 No.7977

>>7961

that would've been a nice idea.

I'm just kind of worried that SWTOR shot ammo too soon on Revan and the Exile.

At this point I am sort of in the belief that it was Revan's influence over the emperor that stayed his hand in deploying Zakuul against the core worlds, so there is that.

Personally I'd love for them to go a little bit deeper into the story of the Exile though, even if it's just with easter eggs and little bits of texts and holocrons scattered throughout the galaxy. Give the sith triumverate a bit of shine too, because there still is the idea that Darth Nihilus could've destroyed the emperor, and that Meetra Surik (the exile) could've also stood a good chance due to her ability to syphon of the force-sensitivity of other people around her. so I'd love to see some of that story return.

 No.8000

I thought that Vitiate's motive stood up well. He's in essence a dark twist on the transhumanist goal of transcending the limitations of biology to free the mind from the constraints of time and vessel. He wants the absolute freedom to experience and be anything he wants for as long or little as he chooses without death or logistics getting in the way, but he's willing to off everybody else in the galaxy to take this liberty for himself.

I consider that an original spin on the lethal maniac archetype and don't know why the writers have decided he needed to be changed into a character who wants to build something to outlast himself. Valkorion worked well enough as a character independent from Vitate and I don't know how they'll reconcile their unity without making one or the other look entirely pointless in hindsight.

 No.8014

>>8000 (checked)

Here's the thing, if Vitiate was just that- a normal, if very powerful, Force user, attempting to transcend mortality. But his backstory reads like "If Jesus was a Sith Lord". He takes over a planet at 10. He's snapping peoples necks and has coal black eyes with no visible whites or anything during his childhood. He tricks hundreds of Sith Lords and eats their souls.

Hayden Christensen's dialogue wasn't this fucking cringy.

 No.8027

>>8014

It doesn't bother me probably because the Legends canon has desensitized me to the meaning of over-the-top. That and I never read the Revan book and only closely paid attention to the game codex.

If you want a gifted but otherwise normal Sith trying to beat death, that's a recurring point in the Sith Inquisitor class' story and class-specific dialog choices.

I haven't seen this uploaded to the board yet and remembered that we were having a discussion about how KotOR and its sequels would factor into canon.

In addition to those little Easter Eggs in the Lando comics, the new official map of planets in the Galaxy includes Rakata Prime. It was created by Pablo Hidalgo, so maybe he warmed up to the Revan era if he was ever against it.

Unfortunately, George Lucas' autistic renaming Korriban to Moraban sticks.

 No.8474

>>8472

it makes sense, though. look up the definition of moribund.

 No.8475

>>8474

>>8472

also iirc hidalgo was one of the guys trying to bring kotor into the main canon anyways, so props to him for including rakata prime. more than likely we'll get at least the first two kotor games re-canonized, i just hope they include some of the other stuff like the sacking of coruscant, darth malgis and satele shan and the kotor comics.

 No.8476

This looks better than the new movie

 No.9100

well, to be honest, The Old Republic era continuity that Bioware is using is far more detailed and richer than the new Disney-continuity of the Empire era.
