The concept arguably is a rehash of what already happened in the EU (Luke turning to the dark side), and to some degree a rehash of Anakin's turn (becoming power hungry from wanting to protect the people that he loves).

After reading the rumored synopsis for the movie, I got the impression that Leia is really happy to have her own mini-Death Star. I can see this kind of power corrupting the Resistance, eventually making them the equivalent of the Empire. Maybe not as overtly evil as the Empire was, but a tyrannical/fascist organization that becomes so consumed with keeping "peace and order" that they become the oppressors.

It's along the same lines as contrarian arguments people have made *for* the Empire. "Well at least the Empire maintains order in the galaxy, the Rebels only serve to disrupt it." Which has some truth to it.
