Even though the EU isnt canon, here's what I've come to understand. Emotions make you stronger, however the more you let yourself become swayed by them, the crazier you become due to the influence of the Dark Side's power to the point where you become paranoid. Jedis believe that the only way to prevent this is by getting rid of emotion which is also wrong because it leads to a cold and calculating mindset with very little compassion. Abiding by the Jedi of having self-control is the best course but its never a good idea to become an emotionless and unloving stiff. Form attachments, but make sure to have full self-control. In other words a grey jedi.
