Did you ever read the rulebooks, or did you pick that opinion up off someone else? I'm genuinely asking because I'm looking at both 4e and Saga on my desk as we speak, and they are not the same.
1) You can still play Saga without maps/mini's, though I use them, albeit without the excess baggage of rules that come with. You can even do this with 2e D&D, just as an added tool.
2) The closest you get to the pigeonholing in 4e is the talent trees, but those aren't even pigeonholing you. I feel they are an improvement upon the d20 system, as they give you even more options for your character. They allow you to play your Jedi/Noble/Scoundrel, any number of different ways. Compare/contrast with 4e where it no matter what you choose, you're still stuck in the same party role, unable to break the mold and do something different.
>Intuitive
Intuitive doesn't necessarily mean good. If anything, in game design, it's come to mean "designed for the lowest common denominator".
