Why exactly did Lucas sellout to Disney?

I mean, he could have easily stepped down from any direct involvement with Lucasfilm, retained ownership, hired the necessary people to make Episode 7, and still make billions without losing his intellectual property.

If it was done properly he could have potentially made more money in the long run while at the same time repairing his legacy.

He wanted to make a Star Wars live action TV series but he couldn't find any funding support and didn't want to do it alone so I guess that set off the idea of selling the franchise to someone else that would do it all.

He was planning on making an Episode VII before the Disney sell out, the plot was different from Force Awakens and was about a group of little kids.

you're forgetting that his original plan was to do 7-9 and then 1-3

dude obviously got tired of making the movies, or was planning to do it later down the line. he hadn't gotten any further than a basic outline with the sequel trilogies.
