So in Return of the Jedi, it's obvious that Palpatine wants Luke to kill Vader so Luke can become his new apprentice. It's also obvious that Vader wants to turn Luke to the dark side as well. But was Vader in on the whole getting killed by Luke thing?

On one hand, Vader was pretty devoted to the dark side, and I can't say I blame him given that he killed younglings and everything. Hard to go back after that. And he should be very much familiar with the Rule of Two, and understand that Luke's infinite potential would be much better for the growth of the Sith than Vader's crippled self.

But I just can't see Vader as the type of guy to go on a suicide mission, especially given that he offered to join up with Luke and overthrow the emperor just one movie ago. Was Vader really intending to die when he crossed blades with Luke in ROTJ?

They just wanted to cause as much Dark Side shit as they possibly could, fuck the Jedi.

It's an alpha thing, you will never understand.

 No.8280

The rule of two was merely about power.

If the apprentice was to rise up too earlier and be smited by the master than he was obviously not worthy and the master would find another.

Vader was just doing his part by being an obstacle and bringing out the potential of Luke.

I don't really understand, since I didn't read the books, how the emperor viewed the rule of two though since he made all those clones of himself.

 No.8298

I see it two ways: either Vader was bluffing about overthrowing Palpatine in an attempt to goad Luke, or he sincerely believed it.

Either way, I don't see why Vader wouldn't have done it regardless, he went on plenty of suicide missions before.

>Was Vader really intending to die when he crossed blades with Luke in ROTJ?

Of course not. Watch the movies again. Palpatine and Vader never openly talk about Luke killing anybody. Their plan was to "turn him to the Dark Side" and of course both wanted to use the lad against the other.

What looks bad is that Vader basically threw the fight. "Luke tapped the dark side" when basically he started yelling and swing his laser sword like a retarded. The scene gives the idea that Vader wasn't fighting at all. He wasn't commited to the fight at all, by the scene.
