If our OT heroes couldn't stabilize the galaxy in 30 years, what hope does the new batch have? There's no reason to believe they have greater skills and that the galaxy at large even gives a shit. If they did, they would have fixed things when they had the chance.

my understanding is that this battle of jakku makes the new republic think that the empire is basically done for good. it seems that the first order scoured to some back corner of the outer rim and rebuilt away from society, hence this not-hoth/yavin planet being terraformed into the not-death star 3
