Yeah I later found out J.J. told the same story months ago, but either way he brought it up again on Jimmy Fallon as if it were a new story. The audience's reactions aren't that of second-time listeners. Basically, J.J. used that to paint himself as the saviour of Star Wars. The GQ article reflects this bias.

The story could be entirely true but it wouldn't change what I was saying.
