The resistance is an army run by Leia separate from the republic with the goal of tracking and fighting the first order. The first order is gaining strength in the outer rim and the republic chooses to allow the resistance to exist even though it is not an official force of the republic for that reason.

I just saw it again today better than I remember. The final saber fight didn't seem so bad this time around as I watched it I realized Rey FUCKING SUCKS at saber combat she spent the whole fight running, stabbing and blocking while Kylo kicked the shit out of her and only won because of previous injuries and listening to the force.
