what is there to understand? vader redeemed himself before his death so he could have been a force ghost in that appearance. besides, luke would not even have recognised hayden cristensen, also, at the point of looking like that, anakin had already done some pretty evil tthings. (murdering the sand people for instance)

Anyone think it kinda weird that his life support suit right away looks like the Vader we know? Would have made more sense to have it just be some generic robot looking thing that Vader tweaks to look sinister and skull-like for intimidation purposes.

Nope. The suit looks was Sidious idea. Vader actually considered quite shitty, shody construction.
