I'm not a liberal and I love the EU, and I honestly prefer Han dying old than Chewie dying young (for his species). I just hate the fact that Disney had to kill ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING in the EU to do it.

Chewbacca was smashed by a moon because of a weird autistic spasm that Lucas had when the book was being written.

Han died to advance a critical character arc that's supposed to span another two films.

I don't really "like" either, but the latter is certainly more tasteful.

Chewie died to advance a character arc unfortunately said character died who in turn set up another characters development which led to him being killed. The EU wasn't that great and depending on the author read like fanfiction. Even the well loved Thrawn trilogy had such sacrilege things as the Empire allowing other species into their ranks.
