I want to propose a concept that will perhaps serve to clarify something that I regard as being hopelessly confused, namely, the varieties of the Star Wars fan.
It appears that the default "Star Wars fan" is meant to be a person who is obsessed with the Original Trilogy. This group grew up with the Original Trilogy and they have been watching it for decades. They can quote many lines verbatim, they know the ins-and-outs of the films, they have bought all the new editions of the films, etc. This group seems to hate the Prequel Trilogy because it is just "not the same" as their precious Original Trilogy. It gave answers and backstories to things that apparently were not up to the standard as these Original Trilogy fans. It is likely that these fans didn't read any of the EU novels and don't really care about Star Wars as a universe, they are more 'Original Trilogy film fans."
Then, there are Star Wars fans. A Star Wars fan is a person who loves the Star Wars universe. This person delightfully welcomed a prequel trilogy, eagerly embraced all the EU books, comics, and games, loves the Old Republic era, appreciates the SW lore and story. To them, the Star Wars films are just a tiny piece of the grand puzzle that is Star Wars.
I believe that most of the time when the word "Star Wars fan" is brought up, it refers to the first group of people, who seem to be overwhelmingly the majority of the Star Wars audience.
I think this is an issue, because those people are not Star Wars fans at all, but Original Trilogy films fans.
