Welcome to Thread 3 of The Adventures of Battlegirl. For those of you who have missed part 2 of the saga you can find it here
>>8167

In the Adventures of Battlegirl, you take on the role of Megan Thompson (a.k.a. Battlegirl) a non-powered martial artist superheroine trying to make a new name for herself in her new home of Utopolis while maintaining her secret identity as a college freshman at the Central Utopolis Metropolitan University (CUMU).

The tl;dr version of last thread is as follows: You narrowly escaped an incredibly multiethnic group of thugs (a gallery of what would have happened had your escape failed is available in last thread). Unaware of the fate of your vigilante partner, MacDeath, you returned to the North Side to attempt to search for him. Unfortunately, during your search you were subjected to chloroform at the hands of two corrupt police. The cops dragged your unconscious body up to the top of an East Side Skyscraper where you met the Burger Kingpin – the megalomaniac leader of most of the organized crime in the city. While explaining his gang’s structure, the Burger Kingpin raped you, robbing you of your virginity. Your unconscious body was dumped where you were picked up and you were let off, but not without consequence. As you found out today, you were pregnant: an issue you were able to resolve by expending all your money, selling your utility belt, and kissing your roommate Kelly for the entertainment of a pawn shop owner.

If you see a name of a character and have no idea who they are, I recommend you pop into last thread or the one before and ctrl + F their name. Most of the characters really don’t have that much going on yet, so their introductions should fill you in on most of what you need to know.

Anyway, without further ado, let us continue

The Adventures of Battlegirl

Where we left off: You and Kelly just got back from your ordeal, but you still have plans to attend a party at the frat house hosted by your neighbor Tony’s friends.

ae5f8d No.9965

>>9963

You and Kelly finally arrive back at your room. Worn out by your pregnancy scare, you both crash on your couch and turn the tv on. You have about one hour to kill before the party, and it seems as if the two of you are still resolved to go, though if you’re having second thoughts, now would be the time to bring them up. After turning on her favorite show, some pirate adventure, Kelly starts talking to you.

“We need to talk about what happened at the pawn shop.” You think back, remembering how your tongues danced when you kissed her to get a better price when selling your utility belt. The truth is, that’s the first time you ever kissed someone like that,

“Yeah, I suppose we do.” You say. “Look, Kelly, I’m sorry if you didn’t want to help me like that. It’s just that kissing you was the only way I was getting that money without losing equipment that I need.”

“You could have talked to me about it first.” You see her cheeks starting to blush as she remembers the situation.

“I needed to make it look convincing. Do you think Big Al would have been satisfied if we had a five-minute discussion beforehand? I’m not as experienced in all this love and sex stuff as you are, but I know for kisses to feel real, they have to be a little spontaneous.”

After thinking about what you’ve said for a moment, Kelly replies to you. “Fair enough. I just wanted to be clear that I’m not going to hold what happened there against you. We’re best friends; we always will be, no matter what.”

You two resume watching the show. The rugged male lead has finally washed ashore outside some small coastal town. He walks to the town, but finds no one in sight. In his search, he goes into the church and starts ringing the bell trying to get the attention of the townspeople. No one answers its ringing. The shot dwells on the exterior of the church, totally calm as the waves keep going into the beach behind it, as the score swells to some kind of frenzy. In the distance, what looks like a ship of some kind looks to be sailing in the direction of the town. On this note, the show ends.

“By the way,” your blonde roommate starts as you prepare to leave for the frat house, “I know this is the last thing you want to think about, but you’re sexually active now that you lost your virginity. We can’t have this crisis happen again. I’m on the pill myself and I’m willing to lend you one from my own supply so you don’t have to worry too much about the consequences of your actions at the party. After that you’ll have to worry about buying your own, though. I don’t have enough money to support both of our sex lives.”

With that, your roommate extends her hand, containing a birth control pill from her own supply. What do you do?
A) Accept the pill, consume it and go to the party
B) Refuse the pill, but go to the party
C) Back down from going to the party

You gratefully accept your roommate’s offer and take the birth control pill. You definitely aren’t planning on sleeping with anyone at the party, but you’re better off safe than sorry. You don’t want a repeat of what happened earlier today.

You and Kelly arrive at the frat house, which you identify from the Greek letters hanging on the wall in front of it. You vaguely recognize the symbols from some of the college prep math and science classes you took in high school, but you never really excelled in any of those classes. In any case, you and Kelly walk up to the door and just before either of you could knock, the door opens. In the entrance stands a broad shouldered guy at about average height wearing a varsity jacket. He greets you.

“Ladies, come on in. I’m Steve. We here at the frat are always glad to have guests such as yourselves at our parties. Beer is in the kitchen, ladies drink free but we charge guys. Upstairs is where most of the couples go once things start getting heated between them, if you catch my drift. There’s music playing over in the back lawn so if dancing is your thing, I’d recommend checking it out. The living room is good for chilling and getting acquainted with the guests. Finally, we’ll be having some party games going on in the basement, you girls are welcome to join if you feel up to it.” He looks you over again. “We’re always glad to have girls like you as guests, if you don’t mind telling me, how did you hear about the party?”

“From our neighbor, Tony. Apparently he’s friends with a few of you guys.” Kelly answers before you can consider an alternative answer.

Steve turns to his frat brothers and shouts “That’s two for Tony!” which is met with a mostly favorable reaction.

Well, what now?

A) Ask Steve what he meant by “That’s two for Tony!”
B) Head to the kitchen to get a drink
C) Head outside to dance
D) Head to the basement to play some party games
E) Chill in the living room

“Excuse me, but what did you mean just now?” You ask Steve, offended at being considered anything for Tony.

“Calm down, Megan. I’m sure he didn’t mean anything by it.” Your best friend tries to lead you away so she can get to enjoy the party without you making a scene.

Amused at the offense you took to what he said, Steve humors your question.

“What I meant was we evaluate candidates for membership based partially on how many ladies they are able to convince to attend our parties. Sausage fests are no fun for anyone, and the ability to convince girls to come to our parties suggests strong interpersonal skills, which is one of our main criteria for membership. We don’t want anyone that isn’t going to be good for our reputation or our parties. It’s as simple as that.”

Before you can respond, Steve walks off and joins his fellow frat brothers in conversation.

You’ve never had alcohol in your life. Not only did you not have much time for socializing in high school, you always disliked the idea of breaking a law without necessity, even one as innocuous as legal drinking age. Tonight, you don’t care. You feel like you need a drink after everything that happened this week. Besides, as a college student, you’re actually considered a little weird if you show up to one of these parties and don’t drink. If drinking is supposedly what helps make this kind of event fun, you might as well try it out. You and Kelly head to the kitchen to get yourselves each a beer.

The setup you see in the kitchen is basically plastic cups and a keg. One member of the frat is operating the keg, in between talking to his friends and any girls that happen to chat with him. When you and Kelly ask for your beers, he fills your cups and makes a little small talk about school and sports. None of it is particularly interesting, but you thank him for the beer and you and Kelly move on. You sip up a little of the beer and, to your surprise; it’s really not that great. You expected it to taste better after all the hype drinking has, but it’s just alright. Maybe people love the effect more than the drink itself or maybe it’s an acquired taste. In any case, you take your cup with you, so you can continue to drink it as you do your next activity.

What is your next activity anyway?

A) Head outside to dance
B) Head to the basement to play some party games
C) Chill in the living room
D) Find Tony
E) User Suggestions

(I swear this will be the last time I give you these exact choices again, whatever you pick here will advance the party)

(Note on alcohol: once you get where you’re going, I’m going to have you do a roll to see how Megan handles it. At one beer we’re talking a very easy roll, but the rolls will get progressively harder, should you decide to refill.)

The basement sounds like the most interesting place to head right now. You’ll be able to get acquainted with the other guests without too much risk of being separated from the only true friend you have here, Kelly. You two head down the steps and find yourself in a room about as big as the entirety of the first floor. There’s a couch area equipped with a tv and some video games, but those aren’t getting any use right now: everyone in the frat would rather be drinking and socializing than playing video games. There’s a table set up with some plastic cups full of beer on it, by the looks of it there’s a beer pong game forming. Aside from that, there seems to be a large co-ed gathering of people, apparently trying to decide if they want to play truth or dare or spin the bottle. It seems like truth or dare is the more popular of the options, but if you join now, you might be able to change their minds.

What do you and Kelly decide to do?

A) Join the beer pong game
B) Go play Truth or Dare
C) Convince them to play spin the bottle (easy charisma check)
D) Go try those video games out since no one is using them
E) Fuck these games, let’s go dancing

(16+ alcohol tolerance roll… 1 rolled – PHENOMENAL FAIL!!!)
Your choice of what to do becomes irrelevant as your vision blurs, your beer hits you. To explain how profoundly bizarre your inability to tolerate alcohol is would likely be medically impossible. One minute you’re alright the next, you’re completely liberated from self-control, after just one beer. You start stumbling with every step, something that fortunately Kelly notices immediately as she offers you support. To show your appreciation, you turn to the frat member nearest to you and start telling him about how much you love Kelly. Your slurred speech instantly gives away just how much your single beer has influenced you, the frat member smiles and nods as you talk to him while Kelly starts trying to drag you away. Kelly’s face is flushed. Kelly starts telling you how you REALLY have to get heading home, and you’re in a state where you can’t really bring yourself to disagree. Before you go, you shout out to the room about how you’re so lucky that you’re already going home with a better girl than any of them will. Another guy in the crowd yells out “Show us your tits!” and you start to comply by lifting your shirt, but Kelly swats your hands down before you could give the crowd a show. She then follows up by walking you back to your room to the amusement of everybody in your path. You start hearing some of the crowd muttering about you being the “Queen of the Lightweights”.

Thank God Kelly was with you at the time or who knows what could have happened. A woman drunk like you were and totally devoid of self-restraint in the middle of a frat house, that’s like being a sheep in a wolf’s den. There’s no way you could have gotten out of that one without her. Once you two get back to your room, Kelly lays you on your side in your bed, pulling your covers over you. You soon lose yourself to sleep. You don’t dream any dreams, actually when you wake up six hours later, you barely feel like you got any sleep at all. You vaguely remember saying and doing some pretty embarrassing things before you left the party, but most of the specifics are thankfully lost on you. You find yourself awake at a little past 2 A.M. Kelly is asleep in her bed; apparently she stayed behind the whole time to keep an eye on you. On the bright side, all the embarrassing scenes you made on your way out seem to have stopped Kelly from being able to make a bad decision. Speaking of bad decisions, you make a mental note to yourself to never ever touch alcohol again under any circumstance.

What do you feel like doing now?

A) Head back to the party (medium luck check)
B) Watch television until you can get back to sleep
C) See if Isaac and Hideo are up to anything fun
D) Patrol the streets as Battlegirl.

You have to save your reputation. You still don’t remember what happened at the party and you need to make sure you didn’t let anything slip about your secret identity or your pregnancy scare. Clearing your name from the reputation of being totally unable to hold down alcohol would also be a good idea. Clearly the medication you took today must not have mixed well. You head back out to the frat house, but as you approach, you see the flashing lights of a campus police car. By the looks of things, the party is just on the end of being broken up, the officer exits the frat house and heads back to his car. There is pretty much no chance of you being able to talk anyone there into even telling you what you said and did. Additionally, you have little hope of salvaging your reputation, most people who do recognize you will know you mostly from the scene you made at the party. You just hope that you don’t have to deal with too many of them in the near future.

Dejected at losing the opportunity to clear your name, you head back to your room. You’re currently directionless, but maybe you could find something useful to do before you force yourself back to sleep.

What now?

It’s been a while since you’ve been able to formally practice your fighting skills. Considering how often you fought over the past week, you need your body to be in condition for fighting if you’re going to make this whole superhero thing work. You decide to train in the clear area in your room by the door. You change into some workout gear (a sports bra and some sweat pants, and start your training with some warm-ups. You do a little over 150 sit-ups of varying kinds as well as various kinds of leg stretches to ensure that you are limber. Afterwards, you practice each kind of strike you learned, making sure to include hand techniques such as chops and backfists, as well as your arsenal of kicks. You finish off by practicing blocks, so that you could know how to redirect your opponents’ attacks. By the time your work-out has finished, you work up a good sweat, so you take a shower and change into pajamas before you plop back down in your bed and go back to sleep. You feel as though your workout will help you when you fight crime tomorrow (temporary +5 boost to combat rolls until Sunday)

Your dreams are uneventful tonight, you’re just glad to get some rest in. You wake up to the sound of knocking on your door. As you open your eyes, you see that Kelly must have already left the room. A glimpse at the clock by your bed reveals that it’s almost 11:00. You pull yourself out of bed and answer the door. You are greeted by the grinning, sight of your neighbor Tony.

“Hey, party animal. I heard you were pretty wild last night. Too bad I didn’t get the chance to see any of it.”

You let out an involuntary groan. “What do you want?” you ask, your frustration even more evident than you had intended it.

“Right, well, I wanted to tell you about how word about the parts got in.” You have to remind yourself what Tony is talking about again. You and he auditioned for the lead roles in your school’s drama society’s presentation of Romeo and Juliet. As you remember, you did surprisingly well.

You decide your best friend is a way more reliable source than Tony. Not only can you be upfront about what you fear you might have said, you could clear up what happened with her. At least she knows all about the pregnancy scare, so when you tell her that what happened was the result of drugs and alcohol mixing in your body, she’ll believe you. It’s going to be much harder to clear that away with anyone that doesn’t know you as well.

You do all your usual morning hygiene stuff and head off in search for her. Considering that it’s about lunch-time you decide to check the dining hall. As you expected, she’s in the middle of eating, but you notice she’s eating with the other girl from your floor. Now could be a great chance to introduce yourself, but you would have rather been able to meet up with Kelly for a one-on-one talk about last night.

How do you approach this situation?

You have to get acquainted with your last neighbor eventually, so you figure you might as well get it out of the way. You load up a tray with a typical balanced lunch and casually stroll over to Kelly’s table, acting surprised to see her. You turn to the wavy-haired, Hispanic girl and start introducing yourself.

“Oh, you must be that other girl on our floor. My name is-“, but the girl cuts you off.

“Megan. I know. Kelly’s told me so much about you. I’m Gabby.”

“Then I guess I don’t need to explain that I’m her roommate. Mind if I sit down and join you?”

Both girls indicate that you can, although you see a little bit of frustration in Kelly’s face. Maybe she blames you a little for making her miss the party.

“So how did you two meet?” You ask Gabbi and Kelly. You’ve never seen the two interacting at all, but you also haven’t been around both Kelly and other people. Usually it’s just the two of you, but you are aware she does have a life outside of helping you out.

Gabby answers you, “we’re in the same chemistry class and eventually we ran into each other in the hall. Kelly seemed pretty cool, so I decided I’d like to hang out with her. We like the same types of shows, so we’re getting along well, so far. We hung out a little last night in the den. We didn’t want to disturb your sleep, but Kelly did check up on you periodically anyway.” You thank Kelly for what she did for you last night.

You don’t want to draw attention towards what happened last night while you’re still in the process of making a first impression with your neighbor, Gabby, so you think of what you three might have in common. Considering that your main hobby is bringing criminals to justice, you doubt you have much common ground there. You decide to talk about what you share, your neighbors.

“So, Gabby. Now that I’ve got another girl from our floor to talk to I’m wondering how you feel about our neighbors.”

“The ones that live across the hall from me seem a little strange. They don’t seem to enjoy hanging out and partying like normal people, so I don’t really trust them much. Then again, I’ve never interacted with them except in passing, so maybe I’m not being fair. As for Tony…” you see Kelly perk up at the mention of Tony as if she’s paying special attention to what Gabby has to say next. “Well, Tony can be a bit overconfident, but he’s in great shape, he’s handsome, and he’s a little funny. If I wasn’t already dating someone, I’d have my eye on him.” Kelly begins eagerly talking to Gabby about Tony for a while, totally shutting you out of any conversation. You can’t help but feel like you’re the only sane woman on your floor, but then you remember you’re the only one that dresses up in tights and fights dangerous criminals almost every night.

Eventually Tony’s fanclub breaks off of their meeting as Gabby finishes her meal and says that she’d love to stay and talk to you two, but she has to get going. You now find yourself alone with Kelly.

“What happened last night?” You ask her almost immediately.

“You had one beer and made a fool of yourself in front of everyone at the party.”

“I know that part. I think it must have been the weird combination of chemicals in my body between the alcohol, the pregnancy scare, and maybe even some left over stuff from when I was drugged the night before. What I’m wondering is if I said or did anything that would, you know, reveal my secret identity or what I had been through that day.”

Kelly blushes for a second. “No, nothing like that. You did almost give the crowd a show, though. I was able to stop you before you could.”

You let out a relieved sigh, “Well at least I don’t have to worry about that. I’m sure I wasn’t the only one at the party that acted like a fool, so we might be able to put it behind me.”

You know that Kelly must still be upset because of what happened last night. Your decision to drink a beer at the frat party caused both of you to miss the rest of the party, and you know Kelly was really looking forward to the possibility of hooking up with Tony. You're thankful that she bailed you out when you needed her to, but you know she's not happy about it now. You need to apologize.

“Look”, you say, looking into Kelly's dark blue eyes. “I know you were looking forward to the party last night and I'm sorry I ruined it for you. I really am. If there was any way I could make it up to you, I would. You were there for me when I needed you to be. Thank you.”

Kelly takes a while before responding. She looks down in front of her, then to the side, then her eyes look back into yours. “I can't hold what happened last night against you. You've had a terrible past three days and it was no more fun for you than it was for me. I know if the situation was reversed you would've been there for me. I'll have another chance with Tony, we still have a long school year ahead of us. And even if I don't, it's a big campus. I'm sure I'll find someone I want to be with.”

It looks like your issues with Kelly are ironed out for the time being. She forgives you for what happened last night and all seems to be well.

Now that things are going fine between you and Kelly again, you need to tell her about getting the part of Juliet in Romeo and Juliet opposite of Tony. You're not sure how she'll take it in light of missing her chance to get together with Tony last night, but she'll have to find out eventually. Besides it's better she hears it from you here and now than if she hears it later and misunderstands.

“You know how I'm in theater class? Well, at the end of class last Thursday, there was a sign up sheet for auditions for the next play the Drama Society is going to be putting on, Romeo and Juliet.” A smirk starts forming on Kelly's face and she perks up as if listening more intently once the play's name gets dropped. “You know me, I haven't been interested in acting since, well… before my parents died, but I decided I'd give this one a shot. It'll let me act like I have a life outside of what I do at night. So anyway, I went ahead and auditioned for the part of Juliet and I just found out today that I got it.”

“That's fantastic! I'm so excited for you.” Kelly looks to the side and pauses for a moment, then looks back to you. “So, who's your Romeo?”

“That's part of what I wanted to talk to you about it for. The actor playing Romeo is Tony.” Kelly's eyes widen in disbelief.

“Tony acts? In plays? Are you sure we're talking about the same guy here?”

“Positive. I don't think there's any mystery as to why Tony wanted the part of Romeo, but it turns out that he's pretty good at acting. Considering what the circumstances are between you, me, and Tony, I have to run this by you. Just know, I'm not interested in Tony like that at all, I just want to act in a play and he happens to be who I'm acting with.”

Kelly takes a moment to process this all, then responds. “Megan, I don't want you to let my feelings for Tony get in the way of your performance. I appreciate that you wanted to be the one to tell me, but you have my support no matter what.” Despite her reassurances, you notice a little strain in Kelly's voice as though she's having to tell herself that at the same time that she's telling you. In any case, you told Kelly what you needed to. Maybe now you should give her some space.

You really need to get back to making the streets safer. You still don't know how MacDeath is doing, the Burger Kings still rule most of town, and petty crimes are still happening unabated in much of town. As Battlegirl, you have been able to establish yourself, but all you've really accomplished so far is bringing two thugs to justice (and a lot of private shame to yourself). Maybe re-appearing to deal with smaller crime might be to your benefit. Before you can head out, you have to decide where to patrol.

What do you do?

A) Patrol North Utopolis (Surgeon Generals territory, site of current gangwar, MacDeath was last seen here)
B) Patrol West Utopolis (Commercial district, lots of civilians who need saving)
C) Patrol Central Utopolis (Campus and surrounding businesses, neutral ground)

You pack your gear and head out to the North Side of Utopolis. As usual, you change into your costume in the park restroom and hide your civilian clothes in your backpack, which you conceal in a nearby bush. Your patrol begins with a lot of false alarms, women letting out harsh shrieks but it turning out that they're not actually in trouble, just having really loud conversations. Your patrol picks up considerably when you hear the sound of a crash in a nearby alleyway. You rush there and are greeted with the familiar site of MacDeath standing over a local thug. This time you recognize the thug as Jaws, the black Burger Kings gang member from your encounter outside Nemo's Tavern.

“Alright, you're the third Burger Kings shithead I've talked to about this, so you better give me answers so there doesn't need to be a fourth. As usual, any wrong answers are subject to corporal punishment. Where is Battlegirl?”

“I don't know, probably sucking the boss's dick by now.”

“Another wrong answer.” MacDeath kicks the thug in the side, loud enough for you to hear it down the alleyway. “What is it with you guys, do you like getting hurt? I know you were there outside Nemo's Tavern on Thursday. You were one of the Burger Kings members we fought. Just tell me what happened and I won't have to break your arm.” MacDeath extends the thug's arm stiffly outwards and raises his bat as if to strike it.

“Alright, alright. I'll talk. We had that bitch on her knees. She was about to start sucking our dicks, but she told the other guys she wanted to suck mine. They all got jealous and once we started fightin', Battlebitch made a break for it.”

MacDeath pauses for a moment as if he's not sure whether to believe what the thug is telling him or not. Finally, MacDeath lowers his bat. “You're the second to give that take on what happened and the other one really didn't know. Either you guys all got together afterward and got your story straight, or that's really what happened. I don't trust you about any of the details, but I guess she must have gotten away. Still, I can't just let a scumbag like you off the hook.” MacDeath whacks Jaws in the back of the head with his bat, just hard enough to knock him out.

You figure you might as well end MacDeath's searching for you now before he ends up getting himself into serious trouble with the Burger Kings, so you decide to reveal yourself. “Nice interrogation. I guess it really does go better when I don't interrupt it. For the record, I planned for them to start fighting each other to clear my way for escape.”

MacDeath turns to face you, his mask is the same theatrical tragedy mask from last time, but his voice is clearly relieved. “Battlegirl, I've been looking all over for you. I got knocked out in the fight on Thursday and I've been searching for you since. I'm so glad to see that you're alright.”

Now that you're reunited with MacDeath, what do you do?

A) Exchange contact information so that you don't have to search for him again
B) Go on patrol with him in North District (easy luck roll)
C) Form a plan of attack to get the North Side enforcer

A.

Patrolling becomes much easier when you're not alone. With more allies the bigger moves we can make too. If possible also ask if MacDeath knows of anyone else that is into this for more allies. Or if he is interested in getting the word out about fighting crime.

(Maybe organize a college club that acts as a "martial arts" group that could recruit or search for more allies?)

So maybe that's an A, and E.

While your first outing with MacDeath didn't go amazingly, you have a lot to gain through cooperating with him. He has some experience crime-fighting, is already an enemy of the Burger Kings, and has access to some useful information about the North Side of Utopolis. The fact that he was searching for you after he escaped the fight shows that he is a reliable ally and you have nothing to lose by keeping him by your side. You decide it's best if you open up to the possibility of working together more regularly in the future.

You tell MacDeath, “I'm glad to see you too. Part of why I'm here in North District is that I was looking for you too. I didn't know what happened to you after the fight and I didn't want to leave you in a dangerous situation without trying to help you. In spite of what happened, we seem to work well together. Maybe we should work together more regularly.”

“What, like you start calling yourself Lady MacDeath and we start patrolling together?”

“Nice try, Romeo. I was thinking more along the lines of us exchanging numbers. It would be nice to not have to search for each other if we need to get in touch.”

“Alright, seems reasonable enough.” MacDeath gives you a phone number that he claims he only uses for vigilante activities and you give him your number. You doubt either of you carry around your heroic cellphones during daytime, so you'll probably only get his voicemail if you call him during the day most of the time, but you can still coordinate your patrols that way.

It is now getting into late afternoon, but you still have time to do some heroic activities before you have to go back to your civilian life. Then again, you have accomplished a good deal, so you can cut this patrol short if you want.

What do you do now?

A) Return to civilian activities now that you've made contact with MacDeath

“So… now that we’re reunited what do we do?” MacDeath asks you.

“Considering how poorly our first outing went, it would probably be a good idea to not mess with the Burger Kings Enforcer and his gang yet. Patrolling and stopping all the crime we can is the best course of action right now.”

“Sounds good to me.”

Your patrol alongside MacDeath leads you to the sight of two people who you immediately suspect must be members of the Burger Kings’ rival gang, the Surgeon Generals. The gang members are wearing standard bluish-green medical scrubs and surgical masks. When you spot them, the two of them are strolling down the sidewalk, slapping a cigarette out of the hands of someone who was smoking and stomping it out. MacDeath notices your apparent confusion at the scene.

“Those would be rank-and-file members of the Surgeon Generals. To call them a gang is actually a little inaccurate. They’re more like a neighborhood watch on steroids. They’re basically public health and safety fascists. They take it as their duty to stop people from doing anything potentially hazardous to their health such as smoking, drinking, tanning, or eating fast food. The reason why they’re the last standing hold-out of the Burger Kings is simple: for them it’s a matter of ideology. The way the Burger Kings conduct their business is heretical to the Surgeon Generals. Pretty much everything about the Kings is threatening to public health and safety, which is the most important goal to promote for the Surgeon Generals. The Surgeon Generals are definitely the lesser of two evils, but the public generally doesn’t like either group.”

As MacDeath explains to you what exactly you’re looking at, the gang members continue their stroll; harassing anyone they see doing anything even moderately unhealthy or unsafe.

How do you approach dealing with these thugs?

A) Follow them (medium stealth check)
B) Fight them (initiates combat on the sidewalk, reputation gains or losses boosted, makes yourself an enemy of the Surgeon Generals)

You and MacDeath decide to follow the Surgeon Generals members in hopes that they would lead you to something more interesting, like a skirmish with the Burger Kings or some other serious illegal activity. The two gang members continue their campaign of harassing the citizens of Utopolis’ North Side until they turn towards each other, laugh, and go into a nearby alleyway. When you catch up, you and MacDeath are greeted with the sight of some light blue curtains, the same kind they place between beds in hospitals. Not wanting to lose the gang members you were following, you go through the curtains and you see four Surgeon Generals members waiting for you.

One of the members speaks up, “Well, what do we have here? Looks like two menaces to public safety just wandered into our turf.”

Also a note on how I intend to revise my system for defensive rolls in combat. I called it agility in this post because that's what I've been doing for defensive agility-based combat rolls throughout the story. Considering that training should theoretically be good for both defensive and offensive techniques, I intend to combine combat agility rolls (that aren't things like running away) into the category of combat rolls from here on out. That way the effect of training becomes a lot easier to tell. Strength rolls used in combat will not be brought into the fold in the same manner, because usually it's a matter of brute force rather than technique.

So in other words, what I'm actually calling for here will be considered combat rolls from here on out. Strikes and the like will still be considered combat rolls as well. That obviously doesn't negate the roll I already have.

You aren’t afraid of a fight, you wouldn’t be a superhero if you were, but you see this as a totally unnecessary battle. You and the Surgeon Generals are both against the Burger Kings and you see no reason why you can’t cooperate, the Burger Kings are too big of a threat to take on alone (or with just MacDeath) anyways. You give reasoning with them one last chance.

“Please, we’re on the same side. Let’s not waste our time fighting each other when the Burger Kings still have a hold in this part of town.”

Your attempt to reason with the thugs goes unheeded as they continue their approach.

Let loose and given the opportunity to prove himself, he skillfully dodges their punches, resulting in the stronger thug accidentally punching his companion at full strength, staggering him backwards and severely injuring him.

How does MacDeath follow up?

A) Rush the weakened thug to finish him off (easy combat check to hit, hard combat check for a follow-up from the stronger thug)
B) Focus on the stronger thug (easy combat check)
C) Hit the thug that’s holding Battlegirl’s boob. (easy combat check)

(25+ combat check… 92+5 rolled – Epic Win!)

You strike the thug who is cupping your left boob with your escrima stick, hitting far harder than you had even intended, forcing him to let go of your breast as he reels back, gripping the side of his head in pain. He is stunned as a result. His companion hears the crack of your escrima stick on his friend’s skull and reconsiders his approach. They both clearly recognize you as a serious threat now.

What do you do?

A) Attempt to negotiate now that you have the upper hand (medium charisma check)
B) Hit him again to teach him a lesson (easy combat check)
C) Gain some distance to stall for time
D) Go after his companion before he can decide to run (medium combat check)

MacDeath rushes up to the staggered Surgeon Generals member and bashes him with his baseball bat, knocking him out cold. Right as MacDeath moved, his other opponent charged shoulder-first into where MacDeath was hoping to pin him to the wall. Unfortunately for the thug, MacDeath was already out of the way. The thug crashes shoulder-first into the wall with a loud crash. He gets up, but his ability to fight should be severely impaired.

What does MacDeath do?
A) Hit his weakened opponent lightly (easy combat check)

(45+ combat check… 9+5 rolled – Epic Fail!)

You can’t let the unharmed Surgeon Generals member flee, he might call for back-up and you’re on their turf. You turn your attention away from your stunned opponent and towards the frightened Surgeon Generals member. Your hurry to catch him before he can run away causes you to trip and fall down face-down. If the opponent engaging you wasn’t still reeling from your hit, he would have been able to take advantage, but luckily for you, you’re just slightly injured by the fall. You get back on your feet and notice that your opponent is no longer stunned; he’s ready for a fight.

What do you do now?

A) Hit Thug 2 again (easy combat check)
B) Hit Thug 1 like you meant to (medium combat check)
C) Hit Thug 3 to keep him off MacDeath (medium combat check)
D) Try to convince the thugs to yield while they still can (medium charisma check)

MacDeath spots the fleeing thug at the same time you do, but he’s significantly less clumsy in getting there. He delivers a powerful swing of his bat straight into the abdomen of the thug right as soon as he starts moving, knocking the wind out of him. The thug that was engaging MacDeath tries to punch him in response, but MacDeath sidesteps it, causing his fist to only hit the air.

What does MacDeath do?

(35+ combat check… 45+5 rolled – Pass) (40+ combat check… 18+5 rolled – Fail)

You turn around and get back to facing your old opponent, and once again swing your escrima stick at him, making contact on the side of his left arm. Unfortunately for you, he doesn’t get stunned this time and decides to grab onto your extended arm and twist it behind your back, bringing his hard crotch into contact with your tights-clad butt. He holds your right arm with his left hand and with his right hand, he decides to cup your right breast and bounces it up and down a few times. You feel yourself getting a little hornier the more he examines your boobs.

How do you get out of this one?

A) Try to twist yourself to free your arm (medium strength check)

MacDeath (30+ combat check… 100 rolled - PHENOMENAL WIN!!!) (50+ combat check… 23+5 rolled – Fail)

MacDeath has had enough of his opponent’s attacks. He lets loose what he intended to be a very precise swing of his baseball bat at his opponent’s side at the same time his opponent let loose with a haymaker. MacDeath’s fury was much stronger than he expected, possibly egged on by his opponent successfully connecting, resulting in MacDeath’s swing knocking his opponent out cold.

The thug holding you gets a good view of his partner getting clobbered by MacDeath. Seeing that he went from a 4-on-1 to a 2-on-1 and the two of you are hardly damaged (relative to what you dealt them), he immediately releases you and surrenders. Your encounter has ended with your victory over the Surgeon Generals members, but you really weren’t looking to fight in the first place.

Your choice with the Surgeon Generals is to treat them like any other criminals you have defeated. They may be the lesser evil, but that doesn’t make them any less deserving of being brought to justice. Keeping them off the streets is worthwhile. As for their surviving member, you decide the best approach would be to scare him and let him go. He did eventually come to see reason and doing so might scare some of his friends straight, or at least make them take you and MacDeath seriously. You tell him that if he doesn’t want to end up like his friends, he should run now. He heads off down the alley as you and MacDeath call the police to arrest the rest of his companions. You get the feeling by the look in the fleeing thug’s eyes that you have caused the criminal element to fear (and therefore respect) you more. For some reason the number 550/1000 sounds appropriate to you. You still have a ways to go as far as striking fear into the hearts of criminals goes, but it’s a start.

As you wait for the police to show up and make their arrests, MacDeath turns to you and tells you that he’d like to continue patrolling with you, but he has personal business to deal with. He heads off, just five minutes before the police arrive and arrest the Surgeon Generals without incident. It is now late afternoon. You can continue patrolling if you want, but you would have to do so alone. Alternatively, you can go back to your room and do civilian activities.

What do you want to do?

A) Continue patrolling the North Side alone (medium luck)
B) Patrol some other part of town
C) Go back to your room and spend your time as Megan Thompson doing something

You’ve had enough action for now. You had a very successful encounter against the Surgeon Generals members and don’t want to push your luck for the time being. As per usual, you retrieve your backpack containing your civilian clothes, change in the Women’s restroom when it’s clear, and head back to your room. You are greeted with the sight of Kelly wearing a sports bra and yoga pants in the middle of doing some kind of cardio exercise. Despite yourself, you can’t help but admire your friend’s figure. Despite not trying nearly as hard as you do, she’s in very good shape. She’s not as toned as you are, but that only serves to accentuate her physique. Whereas your focus with working out has always been practical for your superheroic pursuits, hers has been more focused towards simply maintaining her good looks.

As much as you would love to spend time working out with your roommate, you’re at totally different speeds when working out and you’re in desperate need of money. After your pregnancy scare, you used up both of your spare money so you probably can’t count on Kelly to bail you out again for a while. You resolve to spend your remaining day working at some part-time job to raise the money you need. Looking online, you see that the list of jobs available to you right now is as follows

High School tutor – tutor struggling students and desperate over-achievers alike – pay is $10 per hour for a four hour session, but clients expect results

Library circulation staff – check-out books and assist patrons - pay is $7 per hour for a four hour session

Fast food cashier – ring up purchases and make sure they go to the people who pay for them – pay is $6 per hour for four hours

That is all that is available at this time, but the availability of jobs will vary by time of the day and what Megan is willing to accept doing.

What job do you want to go to?

A) Tutor
B) Library circulation desk
C) Fast food cashier

Feel free to make suggestions for jobs you’d like to see available to Megan in the future. If it’s in-character for Megan and within her capability, it will be available at some point.

I don't think as I've written her, Megan would fight just for money, but that point about info makes sense and makes doing so in-character. I'll write a connection to it to be discovered in some part of town in the future (everywhere except for North Side doesn't have much going on right now, so I'd like to encourage exploration), but it obviously won't be through the same channels as all this work-study part-time job type stuff.

The most lucrative option appeals to you most. It’s hard to turn down $10 an hour, especially when it means you’ll be helping someone. The first person you are assigned to tutor is a ninth grader named Kyle. From the write-up you are presented with it looks like he’s a bit of a troubled student, his grades are generally barely passing and he’s already been held up a year in school. Just looking through his history, you know you will have a hard time engaging this kid, but you have to try. You can make his life better.

You head down to the address you’re given, a small one-story house in the South Side of Utopolis. You ring the bell and are met by the voice of a man grumbling “alright, alright, I’m coming” in a gruff voice as a large dog barks repeatedly. As the man opens the door you notice him perk up immediately when he sees you. Kyle’s father is a somewhat tall, but slightly fat man with a five o’clock shadow and a receding hairline. Physically, he looks the type that used to be an athlete in his youth, but too many years of work and beer turned him soft. As soon as he gets a good look at you, he sucks his gut in a little, stands straighter, and practically leers at you. You introduce yourself as the tutor assigned to helping Kyle, and are immediately invited inside by Kyle’s father. He points to his large dog and tells you that it’s named Bogart. He tells you that the dog’s giving you a hard time now, but he’s sure if you keep on coming back it’ll warm up to you. Without further ado, he leads you to the room belonging to Kyle, where you see that it’s pretty poorly equipped for a kid in this day and age. The tv is an old medium-sized CRT and connected to it is a video game console that you haven’t seen since your parents died. Kyle himself is laying on his bed, lazily watching some garbage reality show. When he finally notices you, he sits upright and tries his best to look like he was actually studying or something. Kyle’s hair is short even by boy standards and blond, but physically he’s already about as tall as his father and in much better shape. The father leaves you two to ‘get to know each other’.

How do you approach dealing with Kyle? (all choices will call for medium charisma rolls to see how they work)

A) Strictly. The kid needs discipline to start doing well in school.
B) Friendlily. Maybe if you reach out to him, he will make some effort to help you out.
C) Focus on business. Don’t be too stern but try to engage him in the subject he needs help in.

You introduce yourself to Kyle and ask him how he’s doing. He looks kind of surprised that you actually seemed sincere when you asked him about his day, so he opens up a little. He claims he’s frustrated at how poorly he does in school, but he feels like he’s so far behind that even catching up for his second time through ninth grade is hard. You suggest that you can start with the basics on the subject he needs help with and work your way up from there. You sit on a chair in his room and turn facing him as he sets his textbook in his lap and takes a pencil out from his backpack. As you set to work, you find out that the subject you’re working on is algebra. Math never was your strong suit, but you feel confident that you know enough to at least help out with getting him caught up without a problem. You start with the very basics, so much so that he even acts a little insulted. Addition and subtraction prove to be very easy for him and his feeling of being slightly insulted drives him to try harder to solve the problems. Moving up to multiplication and division, he slows down a little and almost comes to a complete stop when he hits long division. You show him simple tricks like breaking down larger numbers being multiplied into their constituent parts (such as multiplying by 7 then by 6 instead of multiplying by 42), hoping that will make it a little easier for him. As you lean in to look over his work, you notice that Kyle spends a whole lot of time looking towards you for some reason.

After a bit of work, you start talking about school. He asks you what college is like and what you do for fun and you embellish how good it is a little in the hope that it will encourage him to work harder. You turn the conversation towards how his time in high school is going. He tells you about how much it sucks, about how he wishes he could have more freedom to do what he wants, wealthier parents like some of his classmates, or more attention from the girls. He admits that every attempt he took to get them to notice him generally failed, to which you openly wandered why those girls would ignore a good kid like him. He tries to remain stoic at your complement, but his cheeks flush a little. After your little conversation, you two set back to work. Kyle starts to wrap his brain around the order of operations and very basic algebra problems involving variables by the time your session reached its conclusion. He’s still not up to par for ninth grade math, but it seems like he has a better framework to work with.

After your session, you say goodbye to Kyle and head out of his room. You head to the living room where Kyle’s father is seated watching a baseball game on tv with a can of cheap beer open. Kyle’s father seems a little bit tipsy as he hands you $45, to your confusion. You tell him that the session only cost $40, but he explains that based on the fact that you didn’t leave early, that meant you did a better job than the past few tutors Kyle had, and he’d like it if you’d come back. Kyle’s father mutters something about how hard it is raising that boy as a single father when you hear the sound of bouncing bedsprings coming from Kyle’s room. His door is closed, so it’s a little muffled but the sound is unmistakable. You look at Kyle’s dad with confusion and ask if he thinks Kyle is ok in there. He mumbles something like “the kid has his needs like most boys his age. He’s best left alone.” You don’t really understand what Kyle’s dad is saying or what the sound is, but you take his word for it and the $45 and leave, satisfied at a job well done.

When you get back to the room, it’s pretty late in the night. Kelly is watching the news and right as you enter a report comes on about some big battle between some “Miss Fire” superhero and a super-strong bank robber in East Side. The news footage shows cars strewn all over the place; clearly this heroine (who evidently came out on top) is no ordinary woman. You’re glad for a moment that you mostly deal with the normal stuff. Your exploits are reported shortly thereafter in some kind of superhero round-up where you’re erroneously reported as the sole superhero involved in arresting the four Surgeon Generals members, an error that likely owes to the fact that MacDeath left by the time the arresting officers arrived on the scene. The result in any case is that the public has generated a little more respect for your exploits (your Public Respect is now 780/1000 – you are still a respected member of the superhero community). There isn’t much other news of note.

You still have time in the night for one more activity. What do you want to do?

B) Hang out with Gabby

D) Hang out with Isaac and Hideo

It has been a while since you’ve had the chance to speak to your next door neighbors and despite their eccentricities, you can’t help but think they’re probably fundamentally decent guys. You knock on Isaac and Hideo’s door and are greeted by Isaac dressed up in some kind of superhero pajamas. “S-s-sorry, Megan, but we still don’t have any money we can lend you.” Isaac leads as soon as he recognizes you. Last time you met with Isaac and Hideo it was when you knocked on their door to ask for a loan from them, so it’s not surprising that they would think you’re still after money. You respond with, “This isn’t about that.” You inform him that you managed to raise the money you needed and that you’re sorry that you went to them to borrow money when you knew they shouldn’t feel obligated to lend to you. Isaac and Hideo (who is listening intently from his desk) appear to forgive you. “S-s-so what is this about?” Isaac stammers.

“I was hoping to get to spend some time with you guys. As neighbors, I think we should get to know each other.”

Isaac appears to respond to you saying that enthusiastically whereas Hideo makes some gestures to Isaac that you don’t understand and Isaac immediately calms down. It seems as if the Anime Club has developed some secret sign code or something based on how fast Isaac’s response is. “S-s-so what should we do? I have some animes that are en-en-entry level that we can watch or we can play some v-v-video games. I-if you have a suggestion, I-I-I’m sure I’ll be up for whatever it is.”

“I always wanted to try video games out. How about we play one of them?” you suggest, slightly exaggerating about your interest in video games. Really, you’ve just been curious, but you want to break the ice a little.

First is World Martial Arts Masters Hyper Edition, d-d-despite the lengthy title it’s a pretty approachable fighting game for n-n-newbies. Last w-we have Gunshooters 2, it’s a pretty classic f-f-first-person shooter.”

You decide World Martial Arts Masters Hyper Edition sounds most relevant to your interests. Isaac looks pretty happy as he pops the disc in and takes out a joystick controller and gives you a gamepad. Hideo whispers something inaudible to Isaac and Isaac immediately switches controllers with you. Your new controller reminds you of the arcade cabinets you used to see this game played on at your local pizza places in your hometown. You never were an avid gamer, but you’re still slightly more familiar with the controller now than you were with your gamepad. Isaac controls the menu and steers you into versus mode where a character select pops up. You are unfamiliar with the characters, but you can tell what archetypes they represent based on how they look. Isaac instantly selects the most American looking character on the roster, something you weren’t expecting from a hardcore Japanophile. Isaac also sets himself at a handicap so that he takes more damage from each hit (as he explains to you) to even the playing field.

Who do you use?

A) Karate Man
B) Kung fu lady
C) Big strong wrestler
D) The boxer
E) The karate schoolgirl
F) The monster

(Gaming aptitude… 44 rolled – you’re alright for a scrub)

You pick the karate schoolgirl seeing how she’s the character on the roster who most closely resembles yourself. After a brief moment in the first round where Isaac explains the controls to you, indicating that you hold back to block and what all the attacking buttons are (during which time he pops into your movelist using your controller and shows you how to input your special moves) you get right into the first fight. You don’t do too badly for a newbie (as he indicates to you), but you still lose the match 2-0, even with the handicap on. Hideo takes a turn going against you next, picking the big strong wrestler for himself. You do a bit better, at least you can get in on a grappler, but after just a handful of successful moves, he manages to turn the round around. Once again you lose 2-0, but you’re starting to feel warmed up to the game. Isaac switches back on, and you find yourself tempted to talk about something while playing, but you’re not sure about what.

What do you want to talk about?

A) Nothing. Focus on the match
B) Martial arts. As an actual martial artist, they might find it interesting what you think of the characters.
C) The characters. Maybe there’s a reason why you’re fighting that they could explain to you.
D) Video games in general. They seem to be experts; maybe they can tell you how to get into them.

If you’re going to get good, you have to learn what to do in any given situation. Based on the contrast you’ve noticed between the characters you’ve been pitted up against, you observe that different characters have different strengths and weaknesses, so you ask Isaac what exactly to do, to which he suggests mixing up your high and low attacks as well as staying at as close of a range as possible. You notice as Isaac warms up talking to you his stuttering is decreasing. Following Isaac’s advice your fight goes a little better, you even manage to come out on top of a round, but you still lose. Hideo hops on the other controller again and once again uses the Big Strong Wrestler. Before the match starts Isaac advises you that you don’t want to get in close with the wrestler, otherwise you’re going to get grabbed and lose a lot of life. You follow his advice and manage to win against a handicapped Hideo 2-1. From that point on, Isaac and Hideo lower the level at which they handicap themselves against you, but are still able to come out on top more often than not. If you want to get good at this game you’re going to have to put more time into it. After a few more matches, you tell them that you have to go and thank them for teaching you how to play. As you’re about to leave the room, you look around one last time.

Do you see anything noteworthy?

Your final look around Isaac and Hideo’s room leads you to a detail you had overlooked when you saw it from outside. On the desktop of Isaac’s computer, the background is a collage of various superheroines including the picture of you that the news had used that focused a little too much on your tight tights-clad ass. Otherwise Isaac’s desk is orderly: school supplies, some figures of cartoon girls and a tissue box, nothing that strikes you as too unusual.

Do you make conversation about his evident interest in superheroes or just go back to your room already?
