<The 8chan Global Rule>
[ Who Owns 8chan? | Global Volunteers | Dost Test | FAQ]

File: 034192ae2bd2690⋯.gif (32.47 KB, 500x375, 4:3, 034192ae2bd2690a7564252628….gif)

 No.36611

Earlier today, 8chan was down for maintenance so we could finish the OpenIB conversion, which means several security issues and vulnerabilities were patched. Now, every single IP, including those of global volunteers, board owners, and board volunteers, is hashed. In practical terms, if we ever get hacked again, the hacker won't be able to leak IPs as easily. This should have happened before because it's such an obvious oversight, but I guess that's what happens when you inherit byzantine code. Anyway, no more excuses.

Board owners and volunteers probably already noticed range bans and post histories are disabled. I am bringing it back as soon as possible (most likely today), with a maximum range ban of /24 (that is, 256 addresses) because the current limit of /16 is just way too much power in the hands of anyone and may lead to major disruption of legitimate discussion on some boards.

Since the audits are now complete, I am also happy to announce create.php will be back as soon as the bugs with the new update are resolved.

Should have pulled the range bans way back from that even considering that a good portion of the boards here always range ban every time they make a ban. Why roll it back if your not going to roll it all the way back to a level that makes sense?

Yes, let's help spammers and shitposters and take power away from the mods (as if spamming wasn't already easy enough). You're a fucking retard. Kill yourself.

If a /24 rangeban can't catch a ban evading spammer, there's no assurance that a /16 ban will, but what a /16 ban will definitely ban is thousands of innocent IPs and potential posters.

A severe hard-cap to how many IPs are banned per range-ban, honestly the only place I could think of that would be opposed to that are the /pol/s where it's practiced regularly in the name of stamping out shills through mass blanket bans. It is a mindbogglingly extreme reduction of power and no wonder there's already screeching about it.

Your post is too objective for something so situational.

>Wordfiltering stops spammers

Not if:

1. If they are spamming images.

2. If it being bypassed.

3. If the spam is computer generated gibberish

In it's current state, the word filter is weak, allowing a certain expression to be filtered into another (or lack thereof) at any given time. It is easily bypassed by placing any character, including zero width, in between any part of the set of characters to be filtered.

>Rangebanning does not

Range ban can work.

1. If the spammer is spamming across a specific set of IP, then a temporary range ban will do just fine.

If they immediately change to another range you should probably stop bothering as they will continue, look for another method to prevent them.

When I perform a range ban I always check to make sure there isn't another legit user on the range, if there is I will check the date of their last post and come up with a ban that would least likely effect them.

In some ways, the pedo that hacked 8chan may have ended up benefiting 8chan although that was clearly not that pedo's intent. Ron wouldn't have been forced to do the IP hashing system if it were not for the hack. I suppose every cloud has its silver lining

> hashing IPs

You've got a problem with your IP hashing code — vols aren't reliably seeing Tor posts as Tor posts and Tor keeps getting week-long bans on /pol/ due to spammers. Tor has been banned from /pol/ in the past due to spam, but always briefly and always with a ban message that indicates the vols knew they were banning Tor. The recent bans have not had those messages.

Also, how about allowing Tor users to create threads without images, since Tor users can't upload images?

 No.38577

>>38574

That's just an excuse. /pol/ has IDs and Vols can see the Tor ID. They're banning Tor because they cannot control Tor.

Bullshit.

I tried to have some conversation with some of them and they called to ban Tor users because I disagreed with them (on technical matter about Tor).

This is BS but it's at the will of the mod of the board.

I was happy that I could post again on /pol/ but if the block on Tor comes back I won't go on the clear web just to post on it.

I won't say fix to not fix it but even if it's a pain for tor users to not be able to post images I think it's reasonable.

Just for you to know.

It's not criticism

Hashing is better than nothing :)

Also something that is problematic.

I have noticed that HTTPS on the .onion adress isn't there anymore is it normal ? (hopefully temporary).

Also is it possible to do something about the MITM services of cloudflare ?

Fortunately it seems that we don't have cloudflare service surveillance on the .onion but it's still a problem that encryption isn't their.

The previous Tor bans from /pol/ I've seen had reasons like "sorry torfriends but they're using it to spam" and lasted a few hours. The recent bans are more generic.

>>39432

> Rainbow table

That's why the new IP hashes are salted and include a server-side pepper that is never disclosed and is changed regularly.

> HTTPS on the .onion address isn't there

HTTPS is useless with .onion addresses. I explained this on another thread. In short, to reach a hidden service, Tor tunnels the last hop across a circuit that the hidden service builds to a rendezvous node. This last hop is an onion routing circuit directly to the hidden service, protected with the hidden service's identity key.

HTTPS relies on CAs to validate certificates and not only will CAs not issue certs for .onion domains, but CAs have been caught issuing bogus certs for domains that the requester clearly doesn't control. The Tor hidden service identity key is hashed to produce the onion address. A fake hidden service won't have the same address.

 No.39465

>>39435

>HTTPS is useless with .onion addresses.

I thought that https was required for entry and exit nodes otherwise a third party can eavesdrop on your traffic in clear-text.

If this isn't right then I must be missing some piece of information :/

>CAs have been caught issuing bogus certs for domains that the requester clearly doesn't control.

I am aware of that.

CAs were always useless to my eyes.

At some point someone even thought of making PGP for websites to certify the identity of the said websites.

 No.39471

>>39465

> required for entry and exit nodes otherwise a third party can eavesdrop on your traffic in clear-text

You have been led astray by anti-Tor shills. All traffic leaving your onion proxy is encrypted. Tor builds encrypted tunnels within encrypted tunnels and all of your tunnels originate on your computer. To move data through Tor, you do as much cryptographic work as the entire Tor network does on your behalf.

When connecting to a clearnet destination, Tor builds an encrypted tunnel to an entry node, tells that node to connect to another relay, builds an encrypted tunnel to the second relay through the encrypted tunnel to the first relay, then tells the second relay to connect to a third relay, builds an encrypted tunnel to the third relay through the second tunnel, then tells the third ("exit") relay to connect to the destination. This last connection is clear-text if HTTP is used and anyone watching an exit relay can eavesdrop, but cannot trace it back to you.

When connecting to a hidden service, Tor first chooses a rendezvous node and builds an introduction circuit (all three hops) to one of the hidden service's introduction points, which are also Tor relays, then provides a rendezvous cookie and asks the hidden service to build a circuit to the rendezvous node. Then Tor builds a circuit (all three hops) to that rendezvous node and provides the rendezvous cookie. When the hidden service builds a circuit (all three hops) to the same node and provides the matching cookie, the rendezvous node connects the two circuits together. Your Tor then extends its circuit one more hop, tunneling through the circuit that the hidden service built to the rendezvous node, to the hidden service itself.

Part of the process for extending a circuit is a cryptographic handshake that allows Tor to ensure that it is actually talking to the relay it asked for and not some other node. Since the last hop is to the hidden service, and the .onion address is a hash of the hidden service's identity key, the service cannot be impersonated. The "exit node" for a hidden service is the hidden service's localhost or very close to it, with a secure connection to the service itself unless the operator is a complete moron.

Instead of yelling here, I suggest you to email him at [email protected].

 No.40831

>>39465

When using an onion address your entrance node is your computer and the exit node is the destination server. You're on the encrypted Tor network from beginning to end.

If you're using Tor otherwise then it's useful to use HTTPS. You exit the Tor network at the exit node and travel over the normal Internet to get to the destination, opening you up to viewing from both the exit node and whatever is between the exit node and destination.

This is a common mistake people make when they don't know the difference between traditional Tor usage and hidden services (.onion addresses).
