If you are tolerant of alcohol or drugs, they may act as an anesthetic or numbing agent. So long as you're aware and can function enough not to fuck it up, it may be advisable.
But if you really want to cut your wrists, cut along the blue line (vein) on the underside of your wrist, but cut deeply so that the artery underneath is exposed. Cut this lengthways/upwards with a fine razor/blade. The traditional hot bath does help, since it keeps the blood flowing quickly, slows down clotting, and is nice to lie back and relax in while you slip away.
Position yourself so that your wrists don't fall inwards against your body, blocking off blood flow.
In case you were wondering - Cutting your throat is difficult due to the fact that the carotid arteries are protected by your windpipe (if you were to do this, then feel where your arteries are with your fingertips, & slice from the side). I've seen photos of people who have used this method - the depth of the cut required is amazing so you'd need to be full of adrenaline to overcome the resistance.
I wouldn't advise slitting veins as it's prolonged, messy and if not done correctly you may just end up in A&E getting stitched up and embarrassed at your failings. Unless you go digging deep or surgically for majors - it's highly likely to be a bad way to go out. Worst case scenario you miss all major arteries, pass out, ruin your clothes/floors/walls and end up with a hospital bill with nurse visits to check up on you for a while. The latter depends on where you live I guess.
