 No.1

Welcome to /summerv/, the summer-free /v/. Despite the moniker, this board is intended to be a successor to /v/ free of all the mindless shitposters that have flooded 8chan ever since the second 4chan exodus of December 2014, not just summerfags.

The following posts will elaborate on the philosophy of this board, outline rules, and define what I expect from both users and volunteers.

 No.3

THE RULES, PLEASE READ THEM

1. Obey the Global Rule.

2. NO SHITPOSTING.

This is the big killer for /v/. And most of 8chan, at this point. Because shitposting is subjective for a lot of people, and on some boards banning those with incorrect opinions for "shitposting" is endemic, /summerv/ uses a specific definition for what counts as shitposting; shitposting is the act of posting content which does not contribute to the current conversation or make a good-faith effort to start a different conversation, with the intention of starting fights, irritating other anons, and/or lowering the overall quality of the board.

Examples of posts that would qualify as shitposting:

>Those cocks you're sucking sure look nice OP, but how about you check these sweet dubs instead?

>I-it's okay when Nintendo does it!

>nintendo is a bunch of fucking kikes and amiibos are just shitty happy meal toys, fucking nintentoddlers open your eyes

>MUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMUDAMUDA

>who /4chan/ here?

>what the fuck is up with all these fucking weebs kill yourself lol

>ded game, ded thread, ded board

Examples of posts that would NOT qualify as shitposting:

>But OP, that's wrong because <insert explanation here>, damn, what a waste of dubs

>Guys, compared to the rest of the industry this is just a cute little bonus, comparing amiibos to $15 map packs and shit is just retarded

>DLC cancer in moderation is still cancer, Nintendo doesn't get a free pass just because

>Come on people, if nobody posts here then everybody will just keep putting up with /v/ instead of moving here

As you can see, the distinction is that while the first group shows a either distinct lack of effort (or a distinct effort to be irritating) or plain idiocy on the part of the poster, the second group shows shows a desire to communicate and converse, as opposed to simply stating opinions as fact or laying down bait.

3. Don't take the bait.

One of the major problems with /v/ as it stands is bait. Quite frankly, any typical thread on /v/ is going to be about 70% bait because the retards who currently make up the majority of its userbase don't know how to do anything else. They're so used to bait and/or hugboxing that they simply don't know anything else. Mark's refusal to ban these people out of fear of losing his "based" status and making /v/ slightly less popular is why /v/ is as shit as it is today. I ain't taking that shit. ''For the purposes of this rule, I'll be using the /svidya/ definition of shitposting as a definition of bait, as that's what it's really defining: Bait is a post or thread that has a malicious tone to bait users into responding, usually derailing the thread as a result. Note that an opinion that you don't like or a poorly-thought-out post isn't automatically bait.

Examples of bait (taken directly from /v/) include:

>People think Nintendo should be Santa Claus, demanding that they cater exclusively to them. I swear, some of you little bitches are never satisfied. they could give you a new Metroid, a new F-Zero, Mother, three gold painted exotic dancer, a container of blow, and you would still find reasons to bitch and moan.

>">Name some good games that cripple OP can play easily with a mouse that has 2 hotkeys

>world of warcraft :^)"

>Yes, making 1 game very 20 years is totally viable for people who actually like to play videogames. Absolutely.

>Most of the "fan" art created of Samus since 2008 is not true to the Metroid franchise. It's a disgrace. ((The full post is so ridiculous I snapped a pic of it to post with this.))

If you see bait, report it, hide it, or both. Replying to bait gets you a 1-hour ban. (The ban length may change as I fine-tune things.)

4. NSFW content is allowed, but must be spoilered.

Loli/shota content is also allowed. (And on that note, if you live in a country where such content is considered child pornography such as Canada or the United Kingdom, I recommend against viewing spoiler images on this board. Anons are encouraged, but not required to include warnings about loli/shota content in spoilered images with their posts.)

5. Don't spam the same kinds of threads over and over, or post a thread on a subject that already has four (again, subject to change or more threads for it.

If the thread limit for a subject is exceeded, the thread(s) with the least replies will be locked. Anyone repeatedly spamming the same kind of thread either while other threads of the same kind are either still extant or were just pruned from the catalog will be banned for 1 hour, or longer for a repeat offender.

WHY THIS EXISTS

I created /summerv/ for a simple reason: /v/ is garbage, Mark refuses to do anything about it, and all the other /v/ alternatives have had various failings that doomed them to irrelevance. /v2/ never did any real advertising to speak of, /svidya/ had no-fun-allowed built into its DNA and made the critical mistake of banning SJW drama on an imageboard primarily populated with GG refugees, and /vvv/ was (as I understand it anyway) just Blue being butthurt and proxyfagging his shitposting board into the top 25.

All of these boards' owners missed a critical point that both explains the death of /v/ and holds the key to recovering some fraction of the old age's quality:

Board quality isn't created through rules or mods, though either of those can certainly destroy it if done poorly. Board quality is created by keeping shitposters out and keeping good posters in.

Look at /tg/, for example. Barely any moderation, but one will rarely find a better board to discuss damn near anything in. Now look at another board with minimal moderation, like say /r9k/: seas of shit as far as the eye can see. The difference is people. /tg/ has traditionally attracted a higher breed of poster, mostly thanks to the "nerdy" nature of the board's topics even by chan standards and the locals' tendency to drive off trolls by responding to them as sincerely and politely as possible, while /r9k/ was initially populated by fedora-tippers and other rejects from reality thanks to its origins in xkcd's "community."

When low-quality posts are the majority, any high-quality posts are highly likely to get ignored, and high-quality posters are likely to leave for someplace less clogged with shit. No amount of moderation, including no moderation, can fix a board used only by shitposters.

With these principles in mind, /summerv/'s rules have been created to be used as a weapon to ban shitposters, shills, and other low-quality posters, and nobody else. The end goal is to create a community similar to /tg/'s, where discussion can be had with minimal moderator supervision thanks to a superior community, with /v/ becoming an effective containment board for the shills, plebbitors and other idiots attracted to the new internet hate machine. /tg/ can do this with minimal rules because it has a naturally high-quality base of posters that are capable of self-moderation; /v/ cannot because /v/ attracts retards who can't self-moderate for shit, hence the need to get rid of those retards.

>since the second 4chan exodus of December 2014

Didn't that happen in November actually? The December one was even worse, sure, but that was the third one. And "exodus" is a big word for that, we just grew attached to the idea of being this band of stern but righteous men abandoning our old homeland that became too corrupted to bear.

>>9

>When low-quality posts are the minority, any high-quality posts are highly likely to get ignored, and high-quality posters are likely to leave for someplace less clogged with shit.

>minority

This is what you get for deciding to rephrase things mid-sentence, BO.

>/tg/ can do this with minimal rules because it has a naturally high-quality base of posters that are capable of self-moderation;

It is not just about poster intelligence, it is - surprise - about board culture.

/tg/ can do this because they turn low-quality threads into at least decent or even high-quality threads by taking the OP and derailing it into something good. Like starting to discuss a system or a setting somehow related to OP, or how would certain kinds of characters, again, related to OP, would work in a such and such campaign.

This ends in a long, good+ thread (with anons having a decent amount of fun, by the way) that is perfectly on-topic content as far as board direction is concerned and a frustrated wannabe troll trying to re-rail the thread back into shitposting or baiting terrirory, to no avail. At least this is how full-/tg/ worked back in November.

I know /v/irgins can't be expected to give the same kind of treatment to cancer but actually I was starting to see this with a certain kind of regular threads until pic related happened.

>Didn't that happen in November actually?

IIRC it was late November to early December. Third exodus would be /r/fatpeoplehate dragging the plebbitors in. Doesn't matter, really, it all blurs into one long eternal September anyway.

>It is not just about poster intelligence, it is - surprise - about board culture.

That too. But the thing is, to maintain any kind of productive board culture, you need a semi-stable population of intelligent posters. You can't have the first without the second.

Thanks for the feedback, man.

>/tg/ can do this because they turn low-quality threads into at least decent or even high-quality threads by taking the OP and derailing it into something good.

It might sound melodramatic, but I think these two are really interrelated and form the single biggest problem that chans have at the moment: rather than trying to turn shit into gold, people run the same replies and negativity into the ground, until the lowest common denominator becomes the de facto the voice of the community.

The antithesis of that is what made me stick around chans in the first fucking place: OP is a faggot, but OC will be produced and make all right with the world.

The hope that that might happen again is why I continue to stick around.

That, and boredom. And skiving.

Fucking hell.

BO of >>>/vmu/ here, do you want to start a board ring or something of the sort? We would really love to be friends with you guys.

 No.34

>/svidya/ had no-fun-allowed built into its DNA and made the critical mistake of banning SJW drama on an imageboard primarily populated with GG refugees

Did it really? I don't actually remember any such bans. The bans I do remember though were all the same sort of "quality control" stuff against baiting, trolling, etc. that you've outlined here. These gave people interested in /svidya/ a very bad impression of it early on and drove a lot of people away, and also gave people who just want to watch the world burn extra image ammunition to dissuade people from checking it out.

People don't want to write theses at all times. They don't want to have a serious business debate at all times. When you ban people for playful one-liners you have the effect of intimidating them into not wanting to post at all. This is what killed /svidya/, it's what killed 7chan's (and others') /vg/, and I hope you don't make the same mistake on this board. You are really kidding yourself if you think you can make those sorts of demands for "high quality posting" and still maintain a community. There just aren't enough autists around with the same mindset.

Fuck I knew I was forgetting something. And yeah, why not do a board ring?

>>34

>Did it really? I don't actually remember any such bans.

The BO made a statement to the effect of "bitching about SJWs isn't video games, keep that off /svidya/" a month or so after /svidya/ cracked the top boards list.

>People don't want to write theses at all times. They don't want to have a serious business debate at all times. I understand exactly what you're talking about. Don't get me wrong, here. I fucking love board culture and funposting. I'm just tired of endless bait, dubspam (though people finally bullied Mark into banning spamming dubs because "shit game check em" so that's something) and pants-on-head retarded kids. The rules aren't intended to mean "you must write perfectly at all times," they're meant to mean "do whatever, just don't be a complete faggot." The rules are a massive wall of text because people on other boards love to do things like use "shitpost" to mean "post I don't like" and take that as an excuse to abuse the rules. Shit like that triggers my autism hard.

If you don't like the direction /b2.0/ is taking, write the management a strongly worded letter.

If you want to talk about vidya gaems, do that in one of the threads here instead of being shocked when /b2.0/ is a fucking cesspit.

I don't see your capcode.

I explicitly stated I don't care about drama and want to know what direction the BO will take in future.

I see no reason committing to a vidya board once more if it will just become a waste of time again.

Read posts before replying.

I posted a screencap of a thread indicative of certain developments on /v/.

I intentionally posted an unrelated image first, knowing how the archive works (or, rather, fails to work properly).

He accused me of trying to bring drama to a new board even though I said outright I don't care about that.

After waiting for a while I decided you don't think it is worthy of a reply or, perhaps, that you were too convinced I'm just here to start shit. So I did what I intended to do from the beginning: deleted the files that might potentially lead to pointless shitflinging.

I should have probably posted that I deleted the files myself, but those who have a working brain and aren't ignorant newfags know about the board log and the rest, well, I couldn't care any less about them. Also didn't want to attentionwhore with more useless posts.

Sorry to bother you.

Not a bother in the least.

And don't worry if it takes a while for me to reply, I only check in every few days to see how active the place is currently. Also, I wouldn't really worry about shitflinging here at this point.

You can go ahead and post the screencaps if you want, I don't think it would be a problem and I'm kinda curious about what the hell happened now.

Under the circumstances I find his curiosity understandable. But, at this point, it actually would be inviting cancer indirectly, so I have to refrain from re-posting it. Suffice to say it contained much of what is scorned at on a certain older chan with higher standards than 8/v/.

While I still do not know the answer to my question, it should be possible to lurk and occasionally contribute without getting attached. Worth a try at any rate.

I would be grateful if this topic was finally left to the mercy of entropy.
