How much do good plot, writing, setting and characters affect the quality of a video game?

I know it has always been mandatory to put gameplay above all but can you honestly say that, -for instance- Dark Souls, would have been as good without any item descriptions, NPC dialogue or background fluff?

How should these qualities best be approached? What games according to you achieve the blend nigh perfectly?

I think they affect the quality a lot. While gameplay is without a doubt very important I still get hooked to stuff like The Elder Scrolls which doesn't really have brilliant combat or anything outstanding gameplay wise.

What keeps me interested in these games is definitely the lore and the countless ways to immerse myself in the world.

Of course this varies from game to game. I'd say that it definitely improves the game when done right. I can forgive minor flaws in gameplay if the game world keeps me engaged.

If you have shitty gameplay and slap a story on there, it probably won't help much though.

I'd say gameplay's always the first priority, and aesthetics are always secondary.

You can make a game with amazing visuals, a fantastic score, and cram an Encyclopedia Britannica of fluff into every random note the player might trip over.

But those things are only going to make players better appreciate/tolerate the underlying gameplay. If the core gameplay is borked, then they're not going to endure the game for long before tossing it in.
