Are there any other good action RPGs where dialogue/combat choices actually affect the path of the game instead of just the ending? Alpha Protocol was refreshing after some of the shitty Telltale games I've played, but its flaws have left me craving more.

For me, the real-time mechanic of dialogue made the summarized options make sense. fit because in real dialogue, you're making the script up as you go,

I don't think this is terrible. When possibilities have extreme forks, it adds a lot of cost to development, for content that might not even be experienced in the single playthrough that most people will bother with. So, they used sleight of hand to make the forks seem more extreme than they were. For example, sprinkling G22 encounters around make you think that what happened in Russia/Taiwan (whichever came first) put you on some exclusive track.

This gives the first playthrough a much stronger impact on a smaller budget. The cost is disappointment when someone replays to explore the whole possibility space, unless you get a kick out of seeing through the tricks.

Descent II's levels are so interesting you can't do them justice with a flat image.

I replayed Vanquish from start to finish yesterday, it was one of those totally awesome games that casualfags didn't give two shits about because there wasn't a massive campaign of spam pushing the game and the gameplay itself while not hard it does have a learning curve and demands attention, there's no one-button attacks with auto-aim, if you melee an enemy you have to lock on it first else you kick the air, same with the guns there's none of that cover+autoaim shit from other games of the time, even good ones like RDR

But again nobody gave a shit about that game, paid shills at blogs weren't paid that time so they gave it minimal coverage and as always didn't play it while just watching the trailers and complaining about how cheesy the script was, because they don't even know who Platinum games is.

Lately some LPs have been discovering the game so its finally getting some attention so here's hoping PG makes a sequel, this time with a PC version

Yeah it never got a PC port, no PG game before Rising (which has a LOT in common with Vanquish) did, but theres also a PS3 version and its much better than the shitty port of Bayonetta

Anyway, get a used 360 and try it, you wont be disappointed

Just finished playing a barely translated japanese rom of Rhythm Heaven Megamix, definitely gonna pick it up when it comes out in english. I can understand why the international release dates are so far from the original, there's an absolute fuck ton of moon runes here to translate.

Just a hint to anyone playing it, the shotgun is not the shotgun. That is, the gun that shoots the big ass short range energy ball is the shotgun because the shotgun itself has no fucking power whatsoever.

Myself I've been playing the Brigmore Witches dlc for Dishonored. Adds three levels two of which have multiple areas between them. I have to say I'm not getting why people thought the game was shit, possible undue comparison with Thief but Dishonored would bear a greater similarity to Deus Ex, since their is no preference between combat or stealth. The addon adds the ability to purchase favours around the map which is very good, adding to replayability and allowing you to do something with you money apart from sink it into ammunition (which you don't need if you're stealthing). Could have been more interesting with restricted money but casuals. Levels are well designed with at least a couple of different ways to get to your target. Love the corrupted bone charms, especially the one that reminds me of the worm mind implant in SS2. The art direction on the last level of Brigmore is Gorgeous. In one of the levels you find a note saying that two gangs are fighting in the prison where you are sent to break someone out. You can then lie to a cellmate and tell him you're here to kill her and he'll tell you exactly what cell she's in, breddy gud.

All in all this faggot rates it as solid-good. Far better than your Bioshocks but no Deus Ex, play it if you like these sort of games.

I finally played through the Fallout games because I got them free from GOG and I wanted to finally get some experience under my belt when I talk shit about isometric click-to-move games since most of my experience with them has usually been dumping them an hour or so after starting. It feels good to be able to articulate what's wrong with these games on a much deeper level now.

Oh yeah the Fallout series definitely suffers from that one, especially when it comes to dialogue choices affected by Intelligence and Charisma values. Pure guessing game as to how much is enough.

Honestly, it's been a while - my backlog is so huge that I rarely pick up games anymore unless I know there's a good chance I'll enjoy them.

I think the last time I took a chance was FTL and Risk of Rain, when my friends all got obsessed with them. Risk of Rain I really liked, although it took some getting used to. FTL would have been fun if it wasn't so totally random, but that part was too frustrating for me. A game can be random, or it can be fiddly, but don't make me fiddle with really tiny shit when I can't save and might just randomly die at any moment.

Age of Decadence's story system feel like a labyrinth of sudden skill checks, hidden attribute checks, and quests with unspecified reward. These are acceptable when the game is easy to replay and you don't need to run around the city.

Wow that's a tough question.

To start with I think the problem with most later Harvest Moon games is one of design vision. While they always seem to have something different that they fuck up on, I would say that generally the problems seem to arise from approaching things without the proper mind set of a game designer. Too many Harvest Moon games have problems with tedious stuff that doesn't need to be tedious and things that are only there to slow the experience down. It's like the developers frequently forget to ask "is this fun?" rather than "is it realistic enough?" Harvest Moon 64 knows it wants to be a game first and foremost and not a simulator.

What sort of real farmer is able to water a 3x3 plot of land with a strong shake of a watering can? The philosophy of the Harvest Moon series should never have strayed from taking rural farm life and making it game-like and fun.

Personally I think that the absolute best aspect of Harvest Moon 64–the one that gives it lasting replayability–is playing it like a sort of strategy game where the player is tested to plan out all sorts of things in order to get the best evaluation at the end of the game. Basically, a high score. This is something I have never been able to enjoy to the same extent in other games in the series due to various crippling flaws.

One thing that quite a number of other games in the series screwed up on is making your farmer have really slow walking speed so that it takes forever to get around the world. In contrast, Harvest Moon 64 has a very compact village and your farmer moves around it quickly. Holding a direction and waiting to arrive at your destination is the kind of task that should be minimized whenever possible.

Another thing that is absolutely baffling to me is how in a lot of the games your character has these long drawn out animations when using tools or moving items in and out of your rucksack. That's something that I disliked about Back to Nature (PSX), and I don't know how it compared to the other titles in the series. But it really seemed to drag things out, which made no sense, given that the entire point of the game was to pack as much stuff into each day as you could.

Another problem I think the later Harvest Moon games often have is an abundance of things that don’t really add anything to the experience and whose choice doesn’t affect how the player's skill tested at all. Some good examples are the marketplace system and the hybrid crop system in A Wonderful Life. These things have quite a lot of depth, but the problem is that their depth doesn’t really go anywhere. You don't make shit for money in the marketplace and it just eats up your time that you could be putting into other social interactions. Likewise with the hybrid crop system there are a huge amount of different crops you can create but in the end the meaningful choice just amounts to choosing the one that makes by far the most money.

Another thing a lot of games did is make the mining system absolutely egregiously deep and complex to the point that you really have to put a massive chunk of time into it to get everything out of it.

Been checking this out now. It's definitely a Harvest Moon clones, and apparently of one of the good ones. I notice time passes while you're indoors, not sure if that's a good design choice.

Unfortunately, the game runs like complete ass on my hardware for some reason, and I even had to get this hack-y extra d3d9.dll just to make it run. The frame rate is horrible all around and it also replaces mouse acceleration with really low sensitivity. I hope they can get the game working better, just might buy it eventually if it runs well.

I don't think its as simple as that, the morality system is there to discourage you from doing a genocide run yes and on a surface level there is nothing good about it. Its extremely hard, tedious, and tragic(if you are sentimental about killing pixels at least). The ending brands you and negatively effects the good ending of the game.

Genocide is there for those who have to do absolutely everything in a game, when you do a genocide run you are no longer playing the game for the experience of the story or role-playing you are playing the game for the difficulty/completion of the game.

I still don't understand the hype behind this game.

I liked it. It was like a little modern fairytale, which in turn explains why has a massive appeal for Tumblr. The strenght of the game lies in the visual novel aspect of it, deciding who to kill and who to spare and the ramifications of your actions.

The combat system is a mixed bag. Too easy for the major part of the game, with difficult spikes in undyne and sans in the genocide run.

The graphics are serviceable, but even games built with rpgmaker included sprites will look better.

The music is god-tier. Possibly the sole reason the package could cost 10$.

I would like to see undertale as the arthouse indie film which strengts in applying game conventions to the writing will inspire others to copy and surpass it.
