 No.16465

Let me start by saying i LOVED. Borderlands 1. Me and my cousin played it for hours and hours together. Sometimes pulling all nighters. I fucking loved grinding for guns and loot.

I was so stoked for borderlands 2. I started to play it and after a few days… was so disappointed in what they had created. The world was lifeless, the guns pathetic and unsatisfying, the writing was just terrible. I didnt even beat the final boss. I just dropped it in sheer disappointment and never picked it up again. It makes me sad to know we will never see another borderlands game as good as #1.

 No.16495

Honestly? It's fun with friends and has a few things going for it, but it is a flawed game. Borderlands 1 was a far superiour game despite lacking a story, generally having better environments, better enemies and better guns. Major flaws down below.

>Explosive weapons seem to be better than pretty much everything else making other weapons almost completely redundant.

>Your shields seem almost useless, going down in 2-3 shots, even if there are supposedly really good.

>Every enemy is a bullet sponge and are not really fun to fight. Flyers anyone?

>For a game that prides itself in have billions of guns there are not that many unique or interesting guns with only certain types of guns ever being viable.

>Because enemies are such horrid bullet sponges and do frankly way too much damage; when you do get an interesting weapon you can never play with it due to using such weapons being close to suicide.

>Environments feel almost barren and empty.

>Exploration is quite often a waste of time and when you do find a supposedly "good" loot chest there is almost always never anything of worth in it.

>Poor variety of vehicles and terrible vehicle handling.

>DLC whoring; DLC for Borderlands 1 felt like there was more effort put into it to put in generally good content. Borderlands 2 DLC felt meh and a cashgrab at best, although Tiny Tina's Assault on Dragon Keep was generally fun and interesting.

>Game feels more like a chore than fun at times.

Honestly how I feel. Not a bad game by any means but I do find myself getting bored with it rather fast.

Don't forget the terrible scaling on fucking everything. Equipment later on is pretty much obsoleted within a few levels rather than the 20 or so in BL1. Anyway, I'm mostly in the same boat as this anon. I also took the time to pirate the Pre-Sequel and it was even worse. The O2 thing wasn't even done that well, the double jumping was pretty worthless. I think it would've been better if it allowed for UT-esque double taps and a proper double jump. Though that still wouldn't fix the terrible pacing. You wind up really underleveled if you don't go out of your way for side quests. I don't even remember the characters other than one of them being able to become an aimbot IIRC. I also would've perferred it if the BL1 cast wasn't really given this much voice work. On another note, Mordecai's VA in BL1 was much better if you as me. The big bosses in BL2 are just a big fucking pain in the ass to fight with their HP pools and limiting how much you're allowed to fight them is an insult to Diablo-like looting games.

Oh, and >>16446 too.

 No.16557

>>16460

>Achievement names and an easter egg are forced memes now

I do agree with the HP inflation however. Late game in BL2, an upgrade skyrockets your damage by thousands at a time. The formula is literally an exponential one that gets out of control very quickly.

True Vault Hunter is good, but Ultimate Vault Hunter is a fucking slogfest. It gets even more ridiculous if you find one of the rarer weapons like Infinity which completely outclass any non-legendary weapons of its level and for several levels after that.

Next BL game, they need to step away from Disgaea Syndrome and tighten the scaling so that a weapon doing 5-digit damage is a big fucking deal. Ridiculous damage inflation just promotes boot culture and rewards grinding over actual skill.

I enjoyed it, more or less. I beat it a couple times, but after a while I got pretty bored with it. It was fun but it didn't take long to completely play it to death and Gearbox apparently thinks that doing the same things with bigger numbers on the screen constitutes a whole fresh new dimension of gameplay.

The memes and writing in general were fine on my first play, but after a while it got pretty cringy.

What makes a puzzle game good?

 No.21329

File: 1456197314426.png (5.52 MB, 256x224, 8:7, Tetris Attack 50582 20ms.png)

The way I see it there are two types of puzzle games. There are the ones with static puzzles that never change like Myst or Monkey Island, and then there are the ones like Tetris or Puzzle League that generate a new puzzle to solve constantly through randomization. The problem with abstract static puzzles like Myst is that once you figure out the solution to these puzzles they tend to have very little replay value. It relies mostly on your ability to forget how you solved them the last time you played it. On the other hand, you can fire up a 2-minute score attack in Puzzle League and you'll be in for a new exciting experience every single time.

Personally, I think the latter method of tackling puzzles in games is by far the superior one.

 No.21330

What the fuck? I've never seen this version of the lady or the tiger. Maybe I can't figure it out because it's 3 AM, but fuck.

 No.21333

>>21329

Myst and Monkey Island have puzzles with a single solution, witch require an understanding of a static, initially unknown world. In Puzzle League, there are many "solutions," the rules are always known, and the game features randomness.

Then it's possible to have something between them: many solutions, known world, and static levels, like Spacechem; many solutions, unknown world, and static levels, like Tactics Ogre; or one solution, known rules, and random levels, as in every sudoku-type game. Maybe these are not the best example, but I think they show that the amount of randomness is correlated to the time required to complete a level, while replay value is linked to both randomness and amount of solutions.

>>21330

It's a logic puzzle book based on the story.

 No.21334

>>21330

Rooms 2 and 3 have conflicting views, if they're both lying, neither the lady or a tiger would be in room 2. this means that one of those signs has to be telling the truth. since only one sign is truthful, room 1 has to be lying, that makes room 3 tell the truth, and rooms 1 and 2 lie, so the lady has to be in room 1.

>Ledge grabbing allows for firing from a ledge, and greater freedom movement (especially in ZM). It also plays into ladder and ceiling climbing

At the expense of removing all the reward from proper platforming. The latter two abilities were already represented well by unique mechanics introduced in Super Metroid. Why toss them out to be replaced with more generic shit just to coddle people?

>firing from a ledge

Pretty much the sole ability I will grant it. Even then, I would argue the clingy-shooting mechanic just slows boss pacing around more than it really presents new situations for complexity.

In any event, these are mechanics that Metroid II was never designed to have. Why attempt to hamfist them into it? You already have the spider ball. All a good Metroid II remake really needs in my opinion is making the spider ball travel time faster so exploring with it is more enjoyable.

 No.21309[Reply]

Are there any RPGs that actually handle this mechanic in a rewarding fashion that can be said to be good game design?

Of the systems I have experienced, a random chance of success for a skill that can be performed infinitely until it succeeds or otherwise simply savescummed until it works is a pretty shit mechanic. I would think the first step to making this a non-shit mechanic is removing the pointless dice role inherited from tabletop games. What are some games that do it without an RNG?

 No.21311

Thief and Gothic both use set patterns for their lockpicking, but I wouldn't exactly call them a great mechanic anyway. Still, it's better than what you mentioned.

 No.21312

Alpha Protocol does it without dice rolls but its still a pretty bad system.

 No.21313

The whole concept of a numbered character lockpicking stat seems pretty flawed in the first place to me. With an action that only has a binary outcome (win or lose), I don't see any other way to use it than to affect the probability of a successful lockpick. And in a game with unlimited saving and loading it just seems fundamentally flawed.

 No.21298

So you're saying a good camera has some amount of automatic view switching by default? How should be scripted to change view? Is it okay when it "resides" behind a wall?

 No.21299

>>21264

GTA 4 for instance has a shit camera, shit gameplay and is therefore a shit game

>If you make your character run the camera is locked to the direction it's running direction

>If you try to look around the game pulls it back to the running position

>Not only is it pulled back it makes your character turn in the direction you tried to move it to

>Camera is therefore tied to movement so you can't for instance run while your camera points to your right

>Also the game has unremovable mouse acceleration on top of the fact that the mouse input just emulates a joystick, it even has a deadzone so you gotta move in a certain speed before the game even picks it up

>Unremovable auto center that also has an extremely short cooldown (almost as soon as you stop moving your mouse it's recentered) in vehicles and on foot, which means you can't manually guide the camera as you drive properly and you're fighting the controls rather than your enemies most of the time

>Camera clipping on objects and on early versions of the game getting stuck because it went in a too small of a hole (Nobody really perfected this, but there's no excuse for it when it's a straight line such as a wall and the only way to fuck it up so bad that you can trap your camera and move freely as it stands still is on purpose)

 No.21301

>>21298

>So you're saying a good camera has some amount of automatic view switching by default?

Yes, especially for action games like 3d platformers or brawlers where you don't want to have to manipulate the camera and jump/input a combo at the same time.

>How should be scripted to change view?

It should follow the player on a "track" of sorts, and always be positioned to give the player a view of both their character and the next obstacle (and close enough to the player character to see what it's doing, of course)

>Is it okay when it "resides" behind a wall?

Obviously not, and there's no reason it ever should in a game where you know all the places the player can go. I'm not sure why you're even posing the question; that's an objectively bad situation.

Here's a paper on the subject if you're interested:

https://graphics.ethz.ch/Downloads/Publications/Papers/2009/Osk09/Osk09.pdf

>Obviously not, and there's no reason it ever should in a game where you know all the places the player can go. I'm not sure why you're even posing the question; that's an objectively bad situation.

I have to disagree. If the wall's boundary's are simply made translucent it works far better than SM64's style of pushing the camera around the wall into all sorts of situations where you can't get good enough information about your avatar's position and surroundings.

 No.21303

>>21302

That works for hidden areas, I think, but if the game's doing that within the main course of the level then I think it looks bad. Shifting from translucent to opaque and back again kind of kills the sense of solidity to my eyes, and makes brick walls seem like balsa wood. That's more a matter of opinion, though, and depends on how good the effect looks.

Have any of you played this master piece? What are your thoughts about it? I personally found the alignment to be a very shitty system and mage's magic to be overpowered.

Success Corporation eh? I only know them from their nice scrolling shooters. Is this like Etrian Odyssey or something?

Yeah, it's a first person dungeon crawler with a excuse plot that doesn't take itself seriously.

You start by being bossed around by the Guildmaster who requests a 4-man party and then your party nearly become criminals once you accidentally murder your PTSD afflicted trainer.

The humor is also one of its good selling points in my opinion. Even though it was made by japs, there's no moe involved.
