Phantasy Star Offline (The original trilogy)
Hey /svidya/, has any of you 3 lurkers played these games? I'm currently playing Phantasy Star Generation 2, a PS2 remake of the original Phantasy Star 2.
I already beat Generation 1 and Phantasy Star 3 beforehand.
I can't say I'm a fan of the reworked battle system but I like how they fleshed out the characters adding more lines to the NPCs but some things do feel out of place.
Alpha protocol
anyone remember this game? i recall it got a lotta shit when it came out, and my ayylmaolienware craptop couldnt really run it for more than an hour at the time before it would bluescreen so i never beat it and actually never played it again because of those reviews calling it shit. im reinstalling it now just to see what i missed out on thogh.
have you played it? what did you think of it? why cant obsidian into bugfixing? ( dont know how apparent these problems are, i just know that this was one of the major complaints about this game and other obsidian games )
Valve Reintroducing Paid Mods in the form of Subscription based Dota 2 custom game modes
>Introducing the Custom Game Pass, a new system for supporting and rewarding custom game developers who are committed to building vibrant and lasting communities around their games.
>Custom Games Passes will be limited to a small number of high-quality games that have established themselves in the community. Purchasing a pass directly supports the creators of the custom game as well as granting you extra features for that game. All custom games will remain free to download and play.
>The first Custom Game Pass will be available for Roshpit Champions at a price of $1 for a 30-day duration. While everyone can play Roshpit Champions for free, the Custom Game Pass will enable additional stash and character slots, and offer multiple perks for the duration of the pass.
What do you think of Undertale, /svidya/?
At first I was put off by its painfully autistic fanbase on /b2.0/ but once I actually tried it I was pleasantly surprised.
>Fun mix between RPG and SHMUP
>Memorable characters
>Competent soundtrack
>Multiple endings that effect the game itself
>Fuckable spider girl
Most of the art is shitty and some of the humor gets old after a while, but I still enjoyed Undertale for what it was.
ITT: Series you just want to be good again
>Standard Car Models
>Almost no tuning options available
>Every entry since 2 has been "rushed" to a delayed release date, even the portable version, which was supposed to be a launch title for the PSP
>Last good entry was 4, 5 was disappointing overhyped bunk and 6 was a filler game
>Reviews slowly going down the pan over time
>In the space of 10 years, Forza has gone from a complete joke in the face of Gran Turismo, to being a worthwhile competitor that edges GT in a few respects, to being a superior product that complete trounces GT in almost every way
Fuck, I just want a good GT again.
So /svidya/, what formerly-great series do you want to see restored back to their former glory?
Tree of Savior
They just doubled the EXP rate and gave us 2 extra weeks to play the beta, enjoy.
>What is Tree of Savior?
Tree of Savior is a new action MMORPG with a lot of classes and cute hats. IMC Games have shown an interest in an international release, and has begun testing the game in various other languages, including English and Japanese, even whilst the Korean version is still in testing. The game is currently in the beta phase, and not fully released.

Tree of Savior is somewhat unique in that the games translation is heavily supplemented by fan contributions provided at IMC's offical Github. Is this genius or laziness? It's both!

Lockpicking
Are there any RPGs that actually handle this mechanic in a rewarding fashion that can be said to be good game design?
Of the systems I have experienced, a random chance of success for a skill that can be performed infinitely until it succeeds or otherwise simply savescummed until it works is a pretty shit mechanic. I would think the first step to making this a non-shit mechanic is removing the pointless dice role inherited from tabletop games. What are some games that do it without an RNG?
Rayman
Can never find good Rayman discussion. It's been my favorite series since I was 7, and got all the mainline titles on PC port.
Rayman 1 is one of the best platformers I know of. It was more about precision and timing than speed, which is why Rayman Origins and Legends were a bit of a disappointment to me mechanically (although gofast is really fun in those games). Rayman did have a bit of an underwhelming final boss, however. You didn't even get to fight Mr. Dark.
Rayman 2 had god-tier atmosphere, and was the strongest of the 3d platformers in the series despite Rayman 3 having the better combat by far.
Rayman 3 brought back fist throwing in the best possible way, the hoodlums were a neat concept, and the hoverboard levels were a blast. Fucking Murphy needed to shut up or speak in gibberish though.
Raving Rabbids was an abomination and so were its sequels, and I'm pretty sure the rabbids themselves were the inspiration for Minions.
Origins was neat. Different from 1 and enemies were too weak, but neat. the Nymphs were nice, and Magician being the bad guy was a nice twist.
Rayman Arena/M was fun. Never played it with other people, maybe I can get some kind of tourney going at some point.
Been trying to get my hands on some of the spinoffs, like Gold/Forever and maybe the GBA games that took place after 3.
What's your favorite Rayman, /svidya/?

Looking for Minecraft world changing Mods
So i made the mistake of going to regular /v/ and mentioning the "M" word and naturally just triggered a massive chimpout response. Foolish of me i know. So i come to you hoping for sanity.
I have me a craving to play Minecraft for the first time in years. I've always wanted some mods that altered the world. Maybe floating islands, maybe a waterworld with islets and sunken ruins or something.
All i ever found was things like skyblock that was tremendously dull, biomes aplenty that wasnt different enough and things like aether that is in its own pocket dimension removed from the world.
I just want to live out muh wind waker/skylands/deep sea crafting fantasies.
Is there anything that came out in recent years that drammatically changes the world?
I remember one in production that made the world a barren mess you have to terraform back to life but dont think anything came of it.
Any recommendations?
minetism thread
sup /bestvidya/,
im feeling a bit autistic and considering redownloading minecraft. i havent played since they added beacons, so whats new? im well aware that minecraft isnt a game so much as a platform for mods, so what are the hot mods right now? i was always irked by that retarded ass 256 sprite/block (i forget which) limit, did they ever fix that? did they ever fix the amount of ram the game would allocate?
i never cared much for the teduim of mining a huge area out, or of babysitting a million furnaces and moving everything around manually, so are there any mods that give you a level of automation roughly similiar to factorio? i know there is one that adds stuff like item pipes and automated miners and shit like that, but IIRC you had to know fucking lua to get any of it to work, and i dont want to learn a language just to play a game without tedum.
Fighting Games
Don't tell me /svidya/ doesn't play fighting games!? Or I'm just bad at finding threads, I ctrl+f'd the catalog and nothing came up/stood out
What fighting games do you play regularly?
What's your all time favourite fighting game and why?
Who do you main in what, and why do you main them?
Learned any cool new tech in whatever you've been playing?
I've been playing GGXrd recently. Playing Elphelt because she's cute (the best reason to play a character) and working on her combos and generally getting a feel for the pace of the game. I was looking at some character specific combos and it seems pretty crazy that she can launch and get a full air combo off a crouching Millia or Faust meterless with 2HS - 2D setting them airborn.
Also I've still been playing USF4, I don't think I'm going to drop it forever once 5 comes out as I actually quite like it. Perfecting my Gen for the time being as he's a character that demands a lot of work to perform well.
Underapreciated games
Post games that were actually good and yet faded into obscurity but that everyone should play at least once
I start with Ballistic: it got zero press though granted 2001 was a year with some great games, but then again I also remember a lot of shit games getting more attention than this one
Civilzation
>haven't played a Civ game in ages
>decide to piss away my time with IV
>religion influence and manipulation is buckets of fun
>only have vanilla V
>it feels really stripped back
Is it worth picking up the expansion packs, or should I just keep on with IV?
Also, what of Beyond Earth? Shit looked uninteresting when it was announced and I never kept up with it. Figured if I wanted to do future 4x, nerve stapling is still where it's at.
any smaller game websites you used to frequent, anon?
found an old game i used to play, just in time to see it die
well shit. i had fond memories of this one game from there that i played years and years ago, and its about to bite the dust evidently. at least its shitty forums i never used are still functional http://wild.ffiends.com/DCourt/Boards/Tavern.stm
on a more practical note i goofed when pale meme was warning me about the site using outdated javascript and now it just tells me 'my security settings have blocked me from running an out of date or expired version of java'. anyone know how to unfuck this? also heres the game if you can get it running http://wild.ffiends.com/DCourt/Game.stm
i assure you the website is benign
RPG Games
What are some great RPG games, /svidya/?
I haven't played many but I'm trying to find something with a memorable story and characters (like LISA or TTYD), combat that requires dodging/moving (like the Mario RPGs or Undertale), and preferably can run on PC or is easy to emulate. Any suggestions?
Far Cry 2
So I just finished this game and I was really pleasantly surprised with it. YES, it has dumb ass enemy checkpoint respawn rates. YES, it has laugh out loud bad voice acting. Look past that and you might enjoy the experience. I had installed it a couple of times in the past and the spawn issue always turned me off.
Reinstalled it again after watching embed related . This time however, I faced that design flaw as a challenge. In fact, I faced EVERY single thing the game threw at me, including things that might be considered "unfair", "bullshit", "poor design". I had a blast. Gun jamming, awesome weapons, constant reminders that you are not an action hero and very vulnerable, the fire system, the collectibles. All combined into a very cool experience.
I found the story boring in the first part and, to a lesser extent, throughout the meat of the game. By the end though, it really picked up and wrapped up in a cool and honestly unexpected way ( I won't spoil it here but if some anon asks me to I can go into greater details).
Anyway right now it's my favourite Far Cry installment.
Thoughts? I'd like to get a discussion going and get a thread on /svidya/ that doesn't die immediatly.
Post Your Autistic Theories Here
1/2 (hopefully)
ALL of the Grand Theft Auto games we have seen so far take place in a fictionalized world within an as-of-yet unseen real one. We are merely outside viewers.
>GTA 1 and 2 were experimental films that took place inside a scaled down set, somewhere within R*'s fictional counterpart's headquarters. They were filmed in a storage room large enough to store everything and used a single ceiling-mounted camera that could track certain objects. The cars were radio-controlled models with shells made out of tin foil to emulate damage, the characters were mere puppets, and the water was a few inches high. Basically the in-universe equivalent of pic related. These first two films were made to rack up some of the fund for what they really had in mind. For the rest of the money, either it's an object in the REAL world of GTA, or the team working on the films did a shitton of drugs. That doesn't matter.
>GTA III was filmed on a large set in an empty corner of Eastern Europe at the turn of the millennium, mostly likely in Ukraine near the location of the Chernobyl disaster, which explains the dark conditions and poisonous water. It is also the only map in the history of Grand Theft Auto to be landlocked in one direction instead of being on an island. If you fly to where the bank heist at the very beginning was, it looks like it was made out of plywood.
In this era, all of the NPCs that end up "dying" and do not get "resuscitated" are computer generated fake people or dummies added in post-production. Those that don't are extras, stuntmen and tourists visiting the set. Look at how all of the police vehicle screenshots were digitally edited to be black/white when originally they were all blue, and tell me they couldn't employ similar effects to the rest of what was filmed.
>GTA: Vice City was a TV series that aired between 27th October 2002 and concluded on 2nd January 2004. It was filmed on an island in the middle of the Pacific ocean, somewhere in the mid-point between the Caribbean and West Africa, hence the exotic weather. In this universe, Ray Liotta is deathly afraid of water, and will go into cardiac arrest if exposed to large quantities of the substance.
>Similar case with San Andreas, which was so popular it started exactly one day from the second anniversary of Vice City's initial airdate, and was renewed all the way until 21st October 2008 when "End of The Line" concluded the show's final season. It turned Young Maylay from an aspiring rapper to a world famous phenomenon who eventually became the official spokesperson for Fruntalot clothing. The series was filmed on an island significantly further to the East than Vice City, many of the extras and some of the main characters of a darker complexion were African natives. Re-runs have since removed some of the licensed soundtrack, to the uproar of fans.
>VCS and LCS were similar series that didn't have the amount of success of their predecessors. They were write-offs, in effect, that were filmed on the old sets of the Vice City TV series and the III film. Different actors were selected to play Toni Cipriani, as Michael Madsen had since left to star in the competing Driver franchise, and Vic Vance as the original actor's command of English was far from stellar.
AZN gaymers
So we all know cowadoody games aren't that popular over in asia, that koreans are cuckoo for starcraft and shit, but what about the local gamer culture?
Like, are LPs as popular over there as over here? streamers too? do they use the same platforms (YT, twitch) or they have they own stuff like niconico?
I take LPs must be really big considering koreans go to fucking stadiums to see dudes playing vidya
Currently Playing/Last Game You Played Thread
Old and new games alike.
I'm currently finishing off Half-Minute Hero (PSP). Once I've finished Hero 3, the Goddess Room and the 108 level. I'm done. I don't plan on completing all of the optional titles and getting the best ranks yet (I've done it for the Beautiful Lord) though I'll probably do a bunch trying to get onto the 108 level. I plan on going back later because I know I'm going to pick it up again later.
In terms of comfy games (which threads appear more and more on /v/), there's something that I've been thinking as of recently.
What makes a video game comfy? What are the elements of comfiness? Can you compare the comfiness aspect of two games?
I think that comfiness is the following:
>How much it reminds us of our home. Games are more comfy if they are set in temperate climates. Deserts are somehow less comfy than winter worlds, despite them both being pretty uncomfortable if you were outside without the proper clothes.
>Music with soft sounds, pentatonic melodies.
>The lack of violence.
>Cute aesthetic. Soft edges.
>Slow. Not much tension. Not that twitchy.
The kind of comfy game that many of the anons on /v/ like has to be the above, and also have some challenge and complexity. It's not so easy because difficulty usually implies some kind of tension. Pic related and it's sequel is one of my picks for comfiness, but they're clearly not the best choices since they are too easy, and have some degrees of dirtiness and poverty (though it tries it's best to make it not depressing, with the lighthearted music and humor).
I also think that comfiness is the opposite of horror. Horror relies on irregularity, surprises, and unnaturalness. Comfy games have the opposite: regular/ expected events, no surprises or uncertainties, and things that feel natural and fine. No gore, no jump scares, etc.
Senran Kagura
I'm a big fan of the Senran Kagura series; having only played Burst though I feel like my scope on the series is rather limited. Is Shinovi Versus worth getting a Vita for? If I did get a Vita for it I'd get Estival Versus for it too when it eventually gets localised because fuck getting a ps4. What are the pros and cons of Shinovi Versus anyway? I heard there's some abusable mechanics but nothing too game breaking, also how do the characters change gameplay wise from the transition to full 3D.Genres you want to like, but don't.
Are there any genres that you wish you could play, but just fucking can't manage it? For me it's CRPGs. I just can't do it. They don't hold my attention, the controls turn me off, and the gameplay bores me to tears. But I feel like I'm really missing out by not playing them, so I keep trying to give them a shot and get nowhere. Right now I'm trying to play Fallout again, and I'm already losing interest after only reaching Shady Sands. I don't even know how I got through Baldur's Gate, but it wasn't an enjoyable ride I can say that much.
Picture unrelated because I don't have any related pictures.
just bught a 3 terabyte hard drive, reccommend me some games. posting what i got already to eliminate redunancy. on an unrelated note, how is it legal to sell something as a 3 terabyte hard drive, but only give 2.75 terabytes?

Konami Thread - Resurrection Link
Ok, i already posted this thread in /v/,but this time, im going to do a more serious take on it.
Here's the link: http://mobilesurvey.blicx.com/
Here's what i would like to know from you:
Would you like to see any of these Franchises coming back? Do you think modern Konami would handle Hudson Softs Franchises well/do you think they would do a good job at reviving these at all? Im just curious.
The PS2
I recently got a PS2 slim basically for free. When I was growing up my parents kept the house Nintendo-only since they felt like it was the most childsafe consolemaker. Are there any hidden gems you loved as a kid I should try? Do you know of any good resources for hard or softmodding the thing? The Shooter
We're witnessing something interesting; the FPS genre isn't getting a whole lot of purely FPS blood. The two new biggest multiplayer FPS games looming on the horizon are Overwatch, which is is 6v6 attack/defend, and Battleborn, which is 5v5 ASSFAGGOTS-style multiplayer with a co-op campaign.
Meanwhile, new-ish FPS games that try to stick to more traditional FPS gameplay with a twist either end up dropping off the radar rather quickly (Ziggurat) or being disappointingly small (Wrack). Multiplayer-wise, Reflex has done nothing but become a modern CPMA which is redundant in the fact that if someone wanted to play CPMA, they could do so and play a game that's somehow more alive than Reflex even though the core of Reflex is basically complete. Toxikk has fallen off the grid completely. Angels Fall First seems to be the only thing that has potential, but that's still in Early Access as well. Lots of "unique" games with arena shooter themes like Wickland fall off the radar just as quickly as they release. Dirty Bomb is bad and thankfully dead (never trust any developer that sides with Nexon). We all know what Star Wars Battlefield is going to be like (garbage)
Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Counterstrike are the only three titles that have traditional-ish purely FPS gameplay these days, and the former two series are losing staying power because even normalfags are catching on to the bullshit. CS seems to be the only constant. Wolfenstein TNO was the last recent single-player game to have traditional FPS gameplay that was "shoot bad guys and don't suck dick". Desync looks to bring a whole lotta cool mechanics to the table while still retaining a lot of traditional FPS gameplay.
The question is: where does the genre from here? Are we doomed to have multiplayer FPS/ASSFAGGOTS hybrids and movie cash-ins like Star Wars Battlefield because that's what sells and stays active for longer periods of time? Will the genre just have to wait for developers to have more money to be more ambitious?
Really bad bugs
We've all played one of these before. What are some games that were ruined or somewhat ruined by bad playtesting?
The Gamecube port of Gauntlet Dark Legacy has such an astounding assortment of bugs that it's often enough to ruin the experience. From power-ups disappearing in your inventory after you pick them up, to the shop not allowing you to sell certain things on a whim, to a bunch of boss weapons failing to activate correctly, to clipping glitches that can get you trapped and forced to restart levels, to the game just plain outright freezing at times, to the Strength stat doing absolutely nothing, this game really has it all.
What sucks about your favorite games
Take one of your favorite games and say the worst things you can about it.
I'll start.
-can't map diagonal aiming to anything other than shoulder buttons
-unskippable intro dialogue
-point-of-no-return save in Tourian
-Mother Brain could really be a more interesting final boss mechanically. The cinematic appeal is nice the first time around or so, but on replays it offers little satisfaction as the game's final "challenge" and just feels like going through the motions every time.
-somersaulting gets interrupted when you press anything other than left or right, making wall jumping frustrating if you have a mushy D-pad that hits diagonals accidentally easily
-Golden Torizo has a cheesy safe spot where you can just stand right next to it and shoot upwards
-power bomb charge combos could really be more useful
Dungeon Siege
After seeing Ross's video on it, i decided to download it, and i am loving it.
where are all the mods at and which ones are worth getting?
do i eventually get spellbooks that increase your active spells? because only having 2 available immediately is stupid.
are there any games that follow this idea of having multiple characters like this?
how do i stop these fucking black lines from flickering across my screen while playing? i already tried bltonly=true
is there any way to get it to stop notifying me that the game doesnt support 1920x1080?
So i was banned on /v/ for making a thread about video games im hoping /svidya/ can handle this thread without spamming dubs and screaming SHILL GET OUT
I've been wondering alot of anons seem to love fallout 2 but hate borderlands 2 but they seem the same to me filled with epik memes and pop culture references and bullet sponge enemys
>dodge the attacks
>wait for the chance to stun it/for the weak point to reveal
>attack with impunity
>repeat
Does anyone actually like this style of boss design? Over a more integrated approach demanding the player attacking and defend simultaneously? I know it's sort of become the signature style of Miyamoto but I've always thought compelling "meaty" design was his weak area.
It's like assuming we're too dumb to be able to both attack and defend at once, so they segregate the two interactions for an ultimately less satisfying experience.
http://alltimevrecommendations.wikidot.com/
Since the fun stops here I hope we can get some help for the wikidot, as you know I decided to make a different kind of recommendation wiki after seeing the other two taken over by biased moderation, even if they have some valid recommendations they rely a lot on scores given by third parties instead of personal experience.Hotline Miami 1&2 Discussion
The lastest Hotline Miami discussion thread took place when the HM2 wasn't released yet. So I think it's safe to begin a new one.
Do you think HM2 was as great as the first? Which is your favourite character?
Do you have plans for the upcoming editor? Have you tried to edit the .wad files of the HM2?
GOTY 2015
The year is coming to a close, I want your fucking Game of the Year.
It doesn't have to have come out this year but you must have played it this year!
Got multiple platforms and can't choose between? Pick one from each platform!
Give your reasons why you name it Game of the Year, I want some in depth shit so autistic it makes me worry about you.
Throw in your most hated game as well, fuck it, why not?
I know it's still early December, but this board moves slow
Let's talk about mediocre games that you inexplicably love. Not bad, not good, just mediocre. They may or may not be popular, they're just mediocre.
Why do you love them? What keeps you playing? What's so mediocre about them?
For me, my key mediocre game is Samurai Warriors. When I first played it in 2004 even my young 13-year-old mind knew it was mediocre. There were a few bugs, the draw distance was awful, the game limited the number of drawn enemies to the point where you couldn't see more than 3 people away in clusterfucks, and it was Jap-autist unforgiving. You could level up characters but if you weren't careful you could easily hit the level cap without hitting the attribute maximums. The game expected you to grind for kills and experience while simultaneously running between objectives constantly. The hidden weapons and the higher-tier items were horrible to get and often required you to pull some insane top-tier timetable management. Its sequels up until 4 were horrendous and the Extreme versions were cash-ins to appeal to the crowd that actually enjoyed all the grinding.
And yet I still replay it from scratch on a yearly basis. The secret-hunting, the strategy, the time management, the mindless hacking and slashing, the awful voice acting, it all comes together to press all my buttons in just the right way. I have no idea why I keep playing it.
What about you, anons? What's your mediocre guilty pleasure?
Game of the Week
>Every week we pick a game to talk about and play, obvious multiplayer and easy to acquire through piracy/volafile/etc
So an anon in another thread mentioned this idea and I thought it deserved its own thread.
Several months back now we had this competition on /v/ called the Retro Game Gauntlet Plus and one of the things that originally drew me to it was the idea of encouraging people to actually talk about game mechanics and exchange ideas on how to git gud, the sort of game discussion I love the most and something that I just never see enough of.
So how would we pick the game for starters? And does it really need to be multiplayer?
Translations and Localization
So /svidya/, I've been thinking about translations lately due to SJW drama, but I've come to a sudden realization.
Why don't companies use glossaries more?
Pic related is Steins;Gate glossary. A interesting read and can even be a selling point for the weeaboos. Why is it not used more often? Is it too costy?
My list of great freeware always seems to be expanding.
Do you think there will ever come a day where commercial games actually have to compete with freeware?
I already think that I would find it difficult to justify spending money on new games if I had gotten into video games with the knowledge of all the great stuff that is currently completely free.
7.62 High Calibre: Hard Life
Yes I'm stealing this OP from /v/.
FAQ Pastebin - http://pastebin.com/3EhPVhar
>What the fuck is this?
7.62 high caliber is the Russian love child of Jagged Alliance. Projectile physics is modeled to the point where accidentally killing yourself via ricochet is very possible.
>So it's a game about wielding tacticool shit and killing spics and Jamals?
Basically yes. The game has a story, but not really a memorable one. Most of your time is spent fellating your gun as you mow down bandits, guerillas, native indian rebels and government soldiers all alike
PS. Going full tacticool with your gun can and do incurs massive penalties with your aiming time due to the weight. Waving a 8kg jacked up sniper rifle versus the barebone 5.5kg version of the same rifle feels and shoots very differently.
>Cool, what else can I do
The most recent iteration to 7.62 is a mod called hard life. The mod definitely has an even more Jagged Alliance feel to it than vanilla. As such, you can smuggle, open up a gunstore, a mine and eventually even raise your own merry band of militia and set off to bring true democracy (voting by gunfire) and liberty (freedom by killing all Jamals).
>Wait wait wait a gunstore?
Yes. A FUCKING GUNSTORE. It works exactly like if you were to open on in a warzone. Pay your rent like a good citizen you are, employ an experienced merc to be the manager of your gunstore (don't forget to pay his salary), obtain beautiful versions of your favourite expensive SF-tier raifus and slap every single accessory your grubby unwashed Jamal disemboweling hands can buy from the local market and resell it to the common people (who don't actually care if the gun can shoot straight. They just want the accessories and bragging rights). In fact, my gunstore is so successful that I made more money in 23 days than I ever did in the first 136. Turns out light machine guns and souped up sniper rifles are really great hits (pic related rifle lands me 23000 minimum from a base cost of less than 11000).
Also threadly reminder to always stock up on more ammo than you need, and never let Jamals handle grenades.
So the gameplay is pretty standard, there's a new survival mode which is neat for dicking around in and it's still poorly optimized and buggy. Best thing about this game is probably the visual design, but it kind of makes it hard to see shit in the game.
What could have made this game better?

PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT
Apparently there's a new Phantasy Star Online: Blue Burst server on the block that finally isn't shit. No crap like modified drop rates, tripled experience points, or anything else like that. Just classy vanilla PSO. It's got some nice features of its own though, such as being able to download and backup your own character data, and setting your own section ID when you make a new character. Check it out here!
Maybe anon is interested in getting a game together sometime?
Streaming and shit
OIdfag here and haven't kept with the times, this whole streaming stuff with twitch and shit, I mean how the fuck did it get so popular?
Dunno back in the day (here comes grandpa's stories!) watching someone else play a game was the shittiest part of vidya because it meant that:
A- it was a 1P game so you had to take turns
B- it was 2P but there where more than 2 people in the room
C- there weren't enough controllers so again, take turns
D- you were waiting at the arcade but didn't have any money left so you just watched someone else play to kill time (no smartphones back then)
But today you have all this people just watching others play, and they tip them for that? in some cases hundreds or even thousands of dollars? why? whats the point?
I take companies like twitch depend on ads for revenue, or they get a cut of these tips? that might explain the insane valuation at which it got bought (near a billion)

Why did rapture become a failed state?
its been awhile since i played, but did it have something to do with widely available, highly addictive, combat grade magic that fucked with your brain and appearance, combined with some kind of plebeian revolt? ( i forget the exact reasoning that fontaine uses for his revolution )
did the game scale appropriately to you? i felt like it plateaued when you meet andrew ryan.
what are your thougghts on the ending i felt that the story should have ended when you kill andrew ryan, it was a good twist and unexpected, somewhat. everything after that was just tying up loose ends and felt more like an epilogue. speaking of i never played any of the dlc for one or 2. are they any good?

Do you ever feel like most minigames really have no place existing in their respective games? Seems to me that more often than not they only exist to break up the pacing because the developer couldn't figure out how to continue fleshing out the central mechanics and keep the normal gameplay compelling.
What are some minigames you actually enjoy running into? What are some minigames would you prefer to not even have to deal with?

What do you think of the current trend of increasing prices for consoles over the last two generations?
Wasn't the whole point of a console originally to be a consumer-end game platform that people don't have to pay an arm and a leg for? Are these rising costs due consoles' increasing need to mimic PC hardware (a futile effort), or is it more likely to be price gouging?

Hey /svidya/,
what video games are you looking forward to, if you can find any to be excited for at all. Personally, I"m looking forward to Frost which is being developed by an anon from agdg ( >>>/agdg/21140 ) . It may not be a big game, but I like what I see so far.
So I stumbled across this freeware shooter called MECHA Ritz recently and I'm pretty impressed with it. It's a manic bullet hell shooter with a snazzy Genesis/FM Towns-style chiptune soundtrack. It's pretty easy to simply clear despite the way it looks; the game gives you assloads of shields and screen-clearing smart bombs. But the idea with the game is its adaptive difficulty system makes it harder on you as you get a better score.
The most striking thing to me about this particular doujin game is that it actually lets you map your own keyboard controls for once, instead of forcing ZXCV + Arrows faggotry on you. It's also one of the very few scrolling shooters that actually rewards you for essentially speed running. The game also has absolute shittons of bosses.
You can download it here by clicking the big top link that says 「MECHA Ritz」 on it:
http://www.freem.ne.jp/dl/win/8513
Give it a try!
Does anon have any other underground freeware that people never seem to talk about?

Rebel Galaxy
Saw this game just came out, looked like it might be my kinda thing. sounds like its a 3-d star sector with only one ship though. i can live with the 2D only combat, its the controller friendly part that scars me.
has anyone here played it? would you recommend it? is there any story to it, or is it just another "open world dynamic story," kind of game?
A good concept that branches off a somewhat decent game flawed by one thing, the community.
In a theory crafting vacuum where all players know who's best at doing what and there's some sort of commitment to actually enjoy the game, things work out well, however the only way to actually meet people outside of private hugbox servers is to enter the shitstorm that is a passwordless server.
That's where the gameplay gears get a thick layer of shit composed by third world creatures, children and autism (the bad autism). Rubberbanding mechanics ensure that the faggots that die can hinder the game for the survivors without even actually doing anything, and reincorporating players back into the game costs resources and hitpoints, which depending on the setting may be a wise investment or a complete time sink, when compared to simply disconnecting.
Even if it's on a beta and if there are certain tools that allow server owners to enhance the game the community will never ever improve.
Best enjoyed joining private servers while intoxicated and listening to some kind of meme music (see: vaporware). If you're a solo player and you're not streaming while griefing for streambux, I recommend you close the game.
Killing Floor 2
Since its impossible to discuss KF2 on /v/ without it devolving into shitposting about SJWs, how about we discuss KF2 and voice our concerns about the game? There's a new trailer that's out that goes into more depth about weapons and perks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LJWLQ88d-gMIs Pokemon anti-consumer?
Am I the only one who has always felt like this series was basically a giant anti-consumer scam?
I've been playing through Blue again lately and my opinion hasn't really changed. It has always struck me as intensely anti-consumer that you literally cannot complete these games without owning two copies of nearly the same damn thing. In fact it's somewhat analogous to the way that modern DLC is handled wherein a developer will finish the game and then deliberately cut out content and nickel-and-dime customers for it. Pokemon games were/are designed in the same manner: They have a complete set of monsters developed and then they deliberately cut some of them out of a game and put them in another so that a person cannot 100% a game without owning two copies or getting someone else with the complementary game to help you. Only the cut content isn't a nickel or a dime, it's like $40 to access.
Now maybe it's a little different with modern Pokemon games where you can just hop online and find someone easily to trade the pokemon you don't have. But even then, you either pony up to buy another copy of the same game, or your ability to fully complete a game is beholden to a community that will probably no longer exist some day.
This shit with the old games always really rubbed me the wrong way and it's pretty much why I never bothered with the later entries in the franchise after the first generation. As someone who always had to 100% their games it was a huge load of bullshit to me.
Apparently there's a ROM hack now that combines the pokemon you can't get in each version so that you don't have to fuck around with the same game a ton in order to trade in what you can't find in one version with another in order to complete your Pokedex. I wish I had known that before starting Blue over again.
Online Discussion of Gameplay and Artificial Intelligence
Looking at this, I think the field in AI can provide something to discussing video games.
For the most part, whenever I see a discussion of whether a game is deeper than the other, it gets derailed and turns unproductive or people start discussing what is subjective (they had a harder time with x game than y game, then the other poster disagrees that they thought y was easier than x).
But here, I think that can be evaluated by comparing the depth of the search tree of both games.
I think it can also help with genres with the method of giving a formal definition, as in the page.
What do you guys think?
Black Desert Online
Alpha keys being sent out tomorrow, let's hope I'm getting lucky. What do you guys expect? Are you excited? It's b2p for NA, 2016 release by the way. It's going to have amazing combat, and because of it, pvp and gvg content. It will also have God-tier character creation. I heard it's lacking in endgame pve, it might become b2w if the cash shop isn't regulated right, and the sandbox isn't as big as people want it to be. I haven't been this excited about an MMO since GW2, it's just that this time, I might keep playing the game after I buy it. I hope we can get a /v/, and if there were actually enough players, a /svidya/ guild going. FFXIV did, and it's not a good game, so I doubt this one won't.
Tree of Savior
I've been following this game for a while and I'm liking what I see so far. However, the promise, and consequent expectations, of a spiritual successor to RO could jeopardize the game's future, I think. People may go in expecting to get the exact same feeling they got from RO and anything less will constitute a failure. I've been adamant about managing my expectations of the game and avoiding "hype" simply because it could sully my enjoyment of an otherwise decent game simply because it wasn't a copy of a decade-old game I liked once.
I have to say that, at least in theory, the "class" system they've set up provides a good number of character build options and at least attempts to introduce genuinely unique features between them all. I'm hoping that the international beta will shed some light on how viable each skill is in practice. While I'm worried that there will be lots of overlap due to some skills being strictly better than others (as is almost always the case), the fact that "classes" are at most 3 levels deep should help mitigate a lot of it.
I've been playing around with the skill builder for a couple days now but it's not too terribly useful in a lot of cases because it's still in Korean. Still, I've had fun coming up with support, tank, and combination builds with Cleric alone. With any luck at least 1 or 2 will be half as good in practice as in theory.

MGS timeline
I just finished playing the MGS series, here's my interpretation:Age of Decadence
This game is overrated as fuck.
>all that sequence breaking that can be done in dialogue
>all those long strings of skillchecks that just get harder and harder but don't actually reward anything until you pass them all
>you often lose the opportunity to back out once the skill checks get harder after already passing a bunch with no warning
>that pathetic rushed ending
Seriously, what is with the ending?
>oh hey i found this place i've been looking for for the entire game!
>i can't wait to see what all i will learn here
>wonder what cool stuff i'll find?
>oh lol the game's over
Debate: Fun v. Engaging
I'm not sure if I want to make this a weekly thing or not; but lets have a collective debate about something integral to vidya as a whole. This week (assuming I do make this a weekly occurence), lets focus on Engagement - and whether a game has to be "fun" to be a success, or just "engaging."LAN
Let's talk about LAN parties. They can be anything from you and a few friends getting together and playing vidya with your computers over a LAN, or they can be those fuckhuge nerdfests full of rice and cheetos. I know more than a few of you have gone to them, even recently.
Any tips on preparation, moving, and setting up your computer?
Any tips on organizing one or looking for decent LAN parties?
Do you have any recommendations for fun, portable, and perhaps free or easily /scurv/-able games you can play at a LAN that are easy to pick up and yet still enjoyable?
Any stories about LAN parties you've been to?
So this finally got an update. Added two new perks with their respective weapons, changed balance around a little, and overall wasn't really worth a 3-month dry spell.
Teleporting zeds is still a thing, they still want the kiting meta to be a thing (yet design every map to prevent kiting as much as possible) and medic still gets more exp for kills than for healing.
Did you buy it? Have you played the new patch?
Rules, Meta and General Discussion
Global rules apply, as always
Keep it vidya
There are two types of vidya discussions that are allowed.
Here are some examples.
>First hand.
"Hey guys lets talk about Vidya: The Game and how good/bad it is."
"I need help with this boss battle in Vidya: The Game, any tips?"
"That character in Vidya: The Game sure is cool are there any others like him?"
Etc.
>Second hand.
"Are there any accessories you enjoy while playing Vidya?"
"There's this Vidya themed event, are any of you going?"
"This device I'm using is great for playing vidya, here's why."
Etc.
Threads about /svidya/ group activities or clan parties are allowed as long as there are no multiple threads of the same shit. If you don't like it, don't shit up the thread about you not liking it
Porn
Porn is allowed if it's part of the discussion, but please spoiler.
/svidya/ is not your one stop shop for your porn needs, there are other boards for this, so threads that are just about vidya porn will have the OP banned.
If you post unspoilered porn then a /svidya/ staff member will spoiler the picture for you with a written warning edited into your post.
The second time will have your post blanked and a 1 hour ban placed.
The third time will have your post blanked and a 1 week ban placed.
Self moderation
..is fucking stupid, the /v/ community can't take care of itself for shit, dubs posting or any other form of "self moderation" on a thread you don't like (even if it's a shitpost) will get you banned for 24 hours. Flinging shit at a pile of shit only makes the shit pile bigger.
/svidya/ isn't a /v/ hugbox, if someone wants to make a thread about Gone Homo then they are allowed to do so without any impunity, if you don't like the thread then ignore it.
E-Celebs
Threads about e-celebs are not allowed, no real vidya discussion can be had from a thread about Jon-Trons latest neckbeard fashion or how that one chick in GameGrumps has fetal alcohol syndrome.
If an E-Celeb has an opinion on a game that you would like to discuss on /svidya/ or if the E-Celeb is making a game and you would like it to be discussed then you are more than welcome to make a thread about it, because it hold potential for valid vidya discussion.
#GamerGate
#GG threads are allowed if it's not spammed, I will make a #GG containment sticky if necessary, the moment #GG threads becomes an issue will be the moment where #GG discussion is banned from /svidya/.

>hurr u have to pay 5000 shekels for a ship
No, the minimum is 45. This is only to support the game, and once the game comes out, all the ships will be bought with in game currency, and no it won't be pay to win (as an example you can only get certain items through legitimate gameplay)

MGS V Post-Release Thread
So now that MGS V is released and most of us had a decent amount of hands on time (I'm at chapter 2 with 43% completion.) What do you think of the game so far? Do you think it meets your expectations? Personally, I feel a bit let down, due to a lack of mission variety, especially in the side-ops, and a scattered and uncohesive story for the most part. Do you think MGO 3 and FOB invasions will keep you hooked months after the game is released?
7 Days to Die
I've been hearing a lot of good things about the latest patch for this game, and with the gameplay I've seen regarding said patch, I'm interested in playing it myself.
Is it worth the price they are asking for it? And also, is it possible to play this without steam? I know I can buy the game directly from their site, but I would like to know if it's possible to play with others and receive updates without the need for steam.

Apparently, Nintendo has a survey available for people to take. Perhaps this is Nintendo's way of trying to figure out how to go about its branding itself, now that Iwata isn't in the picture any more? I'm sure you guys will answer well.
Fallout 4 gameplay trailer released
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0lWNdcbq3EU
I wanna be hype but…
-Dialogue wheel rather than just a list of dialogue options, meaning you have only 4 different choices. Mass Effect did do this well however so could still be some hope.
-Looks like there's a massive reliance on triggered events
*Sees dog* 'Hey boy! What are you doing out here?' What if my character hates dogs? I remember seeing dogmeat in fallout 3 for the first time and you could call him a stupid mutt. This is supposed to be an rpg after all.
-*Gets in a giant fuckoff impossible to destroy suit and holds the right trigger/lmb killing everything.*
Looks much like playing as the werewolf in Skyrim, i.e. boring as hell. Just beat everything to death with no tactics required.
The positives:
-Graphics look nice
-Interface/HUD is well designed
Other than that the trailer doesn't go into much detail about freedom to explore or factions etc.
Let's Plays
Let's discuss Let's Plays.
I've recently started watching LPs of the Binding of Isaac by pic related. Commentary is inane, but fun. It's a rogue like, so there's no plot or anything. It's nice ambient noise to fall asleep to. He doesn't have an angry schtick or any gimmick like that either.
I know LPers often get a bad rap, but deep in your heart you have one series or one player that you have a soft spot for. What's that player's name, /svidya/?
and remember to like, comment and subscribe!
Wadanohara and the Great Blue Sea
I just learned about Wadanohara recently and I've been trying to play it. It's fun so far, but I got hit by a bug somewhere in the Sea God Castle where the game acts like I'm holding down the right arrow key. I can still sort of move if I hold down the left, but at a rate of like three squares per minute.
This is the only game that's doing this, so it's not a stuck key. I don't have any other input devices plugged in. The bug persists when I start a new game. There's no way to remap controls or I'd have tried that. Halp pls, I'd really like to enjoy this game.
Female characters in video games and imageboard culture
Do you guys ever wonder why is that no one ever post vidya girls?theres a fuckton of vidya girls out there to post both western and eastern yet people on /v/ rarely post them its always moe anime girls.
Why didn't /v/ form a culture of posting vidya girls like /a/ did? at least it would be unique and one of a kind
Any one want to weigh in on this phenomenon?
Legend of Zelda Thread
>Legend of Zelda Thread
BAD HABITS
So an anon in another thread complained about always taking the easy way out: knowing that something will break the game and take all the challenge out of it, but that anon can't resist it.
And it got me wondering what other bad habits /goodv/ has.
For me, it's hoarding. RPGs like Baldur's Gate render me completely fucking paralytic, unable to continue the main quest until I collect, stock and categorise each and every ring, scroll and bauble. It's always, "I won't take it on the next quest, because I might need it later". But I never do. It's always stored on the second floor of the inn, neatly, in a drawer.
DANTE MUST DIE MODE: DON'T USE THE WORD "AUTISM"
DISAPPOINT IN YOUR FAVOURITE VIDYA
The way the visuals, sound and gameplay respectively shine and, in rare cases, all combine flawlessly: these are fundamental to what makes our personal favourite games what they are.
But sometimes there's just that one thing - one fucking thing - that's off.
It might be the overall aesthetic direction that you can almost not forgive, despite how the game plays.
It might be a gimmicky ability or mode that's so blatantly tacked-on, an unavoidable part of the designer's wretched vision that mars what you consider to otherwise be perfection.
Tell me about it, /bestv/. What nearly fucking ruins your favourite games?
/svidya/ Newsroom
I used to get all of my video game news from /v/, but with it's decline in quality and actual video game discussion, I'm forced to go outside of 8chan to find it. So maybe we can have a thread for our fellow anons that's a one-stop shop for vidya news we think is interesting? Of course this wouldn't get in the way of anyone wanting to make a thread about one specific piece of news and discussion it. I just propose we can use this thread, and if successful threads like it in the future, as a dumping ground for news we find.Sony Announcements
How do you guys feel about these kinds of announcements?
I would like to see all three games come out but there was never a single release date for either of them. There is also the fact that KH3 had a trailer and its most likely dead in the water because EA and Disney have a videogame deal and most likely aren't letting Square into the pie either.
I'm still skeptical about these two even coming out at all and it just being a stunt for playstation to win E3 this year.
And there is no way in hell sony promoted shenmue 3 kickstarter out of the goodness (lol) in their hearts. There are probably thousands of people at Sony who love shenmue who would have promoted that for free years ago, but it being promoted on E3 stage is suspicous.
Class interactions in different games
I confess I'm making a thread here of a kind of game I'm not very experienced with.
Tankers, mages, healers, melee mages, healing tankers, damage dealing mage, damage dealing meleer, support mage, archer, beastmaster, rogues, etc.
What do you think are some games with interesting class interactions? And why do you think they're interesting (by what parameters)?
Is there any game that has a more realistic pre-powder mass combat, like keeping lines and overall actually using the terrain as part of the combat but at the same time still has magics, special attacks, and so on? I'm not too fond of games like Warband and War of the Rose, though they do provide very nice combats, it's just that I like unrealistic stuff, and I like AOE and magic.
Boom Beach Thread
Hello, friends. Let's discuss Boom Beach. What do you like about it? What do you hate about it?
REQUIREMENTS:Level 3 Headquarters or at least 3 days of research required to participate in thread.

Glitches
What glitches in video games have you encountered that weren't just cool, but they actively improved the game?
Pokemon Emerald's clone glitch in the frontier was the shit. It removed tedious level grinding and let you focus on breeding and pokemon builds, then able to copy rare candies to get it to 100 instantly to have a frontier team.
DO A BARRAL ROLL
God, this board is slow. Let's talk about the new Star Fox.

>Gyrowing with mini Direct-i camera for snooping around
>Tank is back from SF64, faster and can transform into a hover/flying craft
>First stage from SF64 mostly rehashed with some changes
>Possible third canon/reimagining of Star Fox

I'm interested to see what /svidya/ thinks on this. Personally I resolved to not back it despite being a fan of Castlevania. It feels too close to a cash-in in the vein of MN9. Outside of Iga and the sound people, there are no development team members who worked on Castlevania. There isn't even gameplay footage, just concept art.

Heard this argument a couple of times about decent/good games made by scummy people. What do you think?Falcom Thread
I can't believe I forgot to make a thread until now; it isn't really home without a Falcom thread in the catalog.suggestions of good game documentaries, reviews and analyses sources
I'm talking about sites with actual knowledge of game industry history, the theories on game making and so on, usually from people who actually studied game making in college. Like this guy who discusses some theories about games:
https://www.youtube.com/user/Campster
Most of his friends channels have similar quality, but my problem with them all is that they have some retarded politically correct views, and also they usually pose as that typical cultured reviewer "oh look at me, I'm so much better than whatever I'm reviewing".
I'm looking specially for good documentaries.
Imagine if Mr. Not Important never uttured a word? I think it would make a more thought provoking and dare I say a "2deep4u" experience. The moment he starting saying shit about "genocide crusade", "my whole life is just whole bitter hatred" I not only stopped taking this seriously but I also cringe most of the times that Not Important talks. The over the topness of his words does not match very well with the really morbid and sadistic atmosphere and the animations when Not Import executes someone.
Let's talk about villains.
Who's your favourite villain and why? What made them tick, what made them a good villain, why are they memorable to you? Are they even a villain, or did the game just call them one? Or are they a villain but presented as a non-villain?
For me, the most memorable villain I've ever experienced in a video game is Dagoth Ur. One of Nerevar's faithful generals, urging the destruction of Kagrenac's Tools and the protection of the Heart of Lorkhan, entrusted to protect the tools while Nerevar left to figure out what was going on, driven mad by the Heart like all mortals, suffering a fate that he never truly wanted. Then his soul got tied into the Heart, and he achieved a false transcendence, believing his existence to be a dream where he is the ruling king of the world, and then acting upon that by will and power alone. Then he wants to uphold the ancient virtues of the Dunmer and spread divine providence through Tamriel, being too mad to realize that it would require untold suffering and genocide and that mortals could not handle Corprus, however divine it was. Was he evil? It's debatable he could even understand the concept of good or evil in his maddened state. Misguided? Perhaps. Pitied? If you want.
Or was he just a complete douche who killed Nerevar in service of his own personal ambitions to become a god?
What about the gameplay aspect of being able to walk into his end-game dungeon, ready to kick his ass, and then talk with him for a while about his motivations in a polite and concise manner?
>Now that you have come to me here, there can be but one result. Many times I have considered offering to share this place with you. I considered offering to accept your oath of service. You might try to buy my trust by giving me Wraithguard, Keening, and Sunder. I thought we might once again be friends… comrades… brothers in arms.
>But I have won this place and power by right of conquest. By right of daring and enterprise. I will not risk it to cunning and deceit. I offer you no deals. If you are my enemy, I cannot trust you. And even if you are not my enemy, I cannot let you live.
>I will free the Dunmer from the Imperial yoke, and cast down the false gods of the Temple. I will lead them out of their ancient superstitions, and gift them with intimate knowledge of the divine. Then, perhaps, when Morrowind is once again restored to its ancient glories, it will be time to consider whether the Dunmer should cultivate ambitions of empire.
>I will continue to broadcast divine power upon the blight winds, so that it will touch each soul in Vvardenfell, and then more broadly, across the waters to the rest of Morrowind and Tamriel. In time, every mortal in Tamriel shall feel the liberating contact with the divine.
Mega Man X Fangames
Since there's fuck all to look forward to when it comes to Mega Man these days–much less X–let's talk about what the fan devs are working on.
Exhibit A: Mega Man X Corrupted
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eIMyDCAhpQw
This is probably the most ambitious one out there. Boasting a Metroid map that emphasizes exploration over linear level design, this game is being developed in Flash and will allow you to either collect and mix armor parts for X or rack up sick combos with Zero, the latter of which brings his moveset from the Playstation games into the 16-bit world, plus all the new abilities he'll learn from bosses alongside X. There is a ranking system that classifies either hunter like in the later X games, and you'll also be able to use or unlock X's Ultimate Armor to use, but something even better's coming back that both can use: Ride Armors.
This one's been in development for a while, and already has a solid, sorta ambient rock soundtrack and sweet fan art you can check out on YT, along with the gameplay demos. I'm looking forward to it, although not as much as I used to. The Giga Wheel video was okay, and once again I'd rather a game that focuses on developing X's gameplay into something we haven't seen yet and tell Zero to fuck off for a change. Still, this is clearly a love letter to all of the sidescrolling X games, and I'm no one to tell JKB what to do.

Exhibit B: Mega Man X Eclipse
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kuLou0Bo86s
This one's already got a one-stage demo going, and it appears to be a traditional X game that focuses on X. I haven't played this one yet or know much about it, but it looks like exactly what I was asking for. Plus I like the soundtrack better than Corrupted, so that's a good sign. Scorch Raptor could use a facelift.

New Red Shirts EditionSpeed Running Thread
What are your favorite games to watch? What categories? Favorite runners? Or what about favorite games to run? Favorite tricks and glitches?
As for me, I really like watching Sonic '06 (no MSG), DK64 NLE and 100%, Mario Golf on the N64 and Doom. Genesis Sonic games are a pretty nice watch but I don't seem them that often.
I run Freedom Planet; been mostly focusing more on ILs with Lilac rather than doing full runs
Bloodborne General
>Lore>Playing D3 last night on PS4
>Decide to jump into pub rooms to play with other folk
>Enter 6 different ones
>All the players in them had absurd paragon levels and where using this sword
What is even the point of this, you can find items within D3 itself that can trivialize the higher difficulties, hell the entire point of Diablo 3 is to get better loot and get stronger, why on earth would you just give yourself a one shot sword.
Voxelnauts
So apparently this is a thing
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1760210928/voxelnauts-vr-mmo/
What do you think of it, s/v/?
Do you think player created content is enough to base an MMO on?
How much of a transparent marketing gimmick is VR support in a voxel-based game game?
Is "Minecraft but made by competent people instead" a good enough idea to support a crowdfunding project?
Is such a bold sci-fi fantasy hybrid really such a good idea?
What kind of MMO would you make?
Hold onto your butts niggas, lets talk about "interactive story games".
I'll be honest i kind of love some of them. But i have always been a sucker for world design porn in games ever since the PS1 era added full 3D environments you could explore. Something i would go on to do in any vidya i could.
Of course i dont consider them proper games since theres no challenge, fail state and so on. But that doesnt mean i dont enjoy the odd one done for reasons beyond 'LEL IM SO INDIE XDDDDDDD VISIT MUH PATREON' horseshit.
Case in point Dear Esther. I know the dialogue is up its own ass so far it can taste its own sphincter, but the music and island to explore was gorgeous in a lonely, wary kind of way. It pulled me in and made me want to explore more than any game like amnesia ever managed to do.
What do you think about them? Do they have a place? Sure theres a sea of shitty ones by wannabe indie devs, but i think every so often theres something worth a buck in a steam sale or humble bundle type deal to explore and enjoy, if only for an hour or two.
Classic Sonic the "level memorization" platformer and Modern Sonic the "spectacle" platformer
I think we can all agree that speaking broadly, modern Sonic doesn't necessarily sux but could generally be better and Generations, Colors and Lost World were great specifically because they deviated from the standard set by Sonic Adventure. However, there are parts of these games that I think would be worth retaining in an ideal perfect 3D sanic, notably the speed of the speed segments because the speed of the 2D games wasn't even that fast, the occasional cool view and the branching rail segments. What 3D sanic needs (and Heroes did a little bit of but it didn't fucking matter since all it ever had was a bonus and redirection to the main route) is more open level designs that give you a variety of routes including some that are harder to get to while being relatively linear within said routes. Case in point, Heroes tried to have more 3D level design and it fucking sucked (that aspect of it anyways). Sonic works best in straightforward tunnel-like level designs, like it or not. What you can do is retain an exploration aspect by having a lot of branches and secret areas. On the more obvious side of things, we need to cut down on the Sonicfriends in the main platforming games and playibility for any of them at all short of maybe Tails and Knux is a bad idea. Another thing you could do? 2D side perspective style levels, but with depth, so you could do optical illusion secret areas and shit.
Agree/disagree? Is there anything I missed?
Forgotten games
I'm trying to find an old text based MMORPG I used to play. Basically, it had a pretty simple layout like pic related. You navigated the world by pressing compass directions (W, N, NW, etc) and by co-ordinates. The further you got from the center of the map, the stronger the enemies became.THE iDOLM@STER
Seeing as how this is too niche to keep alive on /v/ and there's a few similar threads doing well here I figured I'd give it a shot.Witcher 1 and 2 thread
I just got both of these games so i thought we could have a thread about those two games.
I tried The Witcher: Enhanced Edition Director's Cut and noticed lagging, is there anything i can do to make it less bad or remove it?
Besides that it look like it will be good and fun.
Other Yooka-Layley thread was dead/old, so I'm making a new one to talk about the gameplay that IGN showed recently.
http://ca.ign.com/videos/2015/05/01/why-yooka-laylee-is-basically-banjo-kazooie-3
Direct link to IGN because videos don't work with archive.is.
So now that we've gotten to see the characters in motion (even if it's clearly alpha or beta), what do you think of the game, /svidya/? It seems to be colourful enough and certain parts of the levels remind me of old school platformers like Super Mario 64, but I disliked how they said collectibles will play an important part in the game. I hate collectibles and collectathon-styled platformers, so I hope that they don't have as many things to collect as Banjo-Kazooie or Donkey Kong 64.
This is all pointless speculation, of course, but speculation can be fun.
So I'm not sure this is the right to ask this, and if not Mods can delete this thread.
I recently imported a Vita pch-2000 from Japan and the Lithium Ion battery died on me. Does anyone know of a place where I can purchase a replacement? All I found on google was a Chinese website of the manufacturers of the battery but no location to purchase it.
Also, general Vita thread I guess. What are you guys playing/looking forward to? I was in the middle of playing J'eanne D'arc and had just finished Gravity Rush before the battery took a shit. Really looking forward to Gravity Rush 2.
Myst Thread
Just beat Myst. I'd played this many years ago along with the rest of the games in the series, and even though many of the puzzles in the game are extremely tedious and demanding, I appreciate how the challenges forced me to write things down or remember them well enough to use again. The second half of the Selenitic Age was the most tedious, but it was one of those hurdles that challenged your rigor and your patience to explore. If you don't map out your progress and dead ends, you'll spend much more time than you need to there, as well as any of the other puzzles. That's one of the charms of old adventure games from the 90s: it builds character and makes the payoff more satisfying in the end.
Challenging puzzles aside, I'm absolutely in love with the game's ambience and it's history. Reading the few remaining books in the library were a rich pleasure when starting the game, and it would've been a nice reward to have gotten to read more of Atrus' travels, like the mentioned voyages to Everdunes, Osmoian, and Aspermere, or actually having something to do in the realMyst-only Rime age. Still, the experience was a memorable one nonetheless, and it makes Myst one of my favorite videogames. It's not the most glamorous or smooth, but it's fun and imaginative. I've played up to Myst V: End of Ages but haven't played Uru yet, so I'll probably get to that in my replay of the series. Next up will be Riven.
Now, forget Myst III and IV for a moment, I've got one question:
When you return the Myst page to Atrus, and he goes back to deal with his sons, were we meant to believe that Atrus killed his sons? Either actively or by virtue of stranding them forever in limbo with no hope of escape?
