Whatcha playin anon?

What do ya think of it?

 No.21244

Just finished Eternal Senia. I was actually pleasently surprised. The areas were cool and I really enjoyed the music. Too bad the translation was shit (but I guess it's to be expected, it was free).

File: 1454805210330.jpg (97.96 KB, 800x700, 8:7, Blood Bros.jpg)

Been playing some Blood Bros., the spiritual sequel to Cabal.

I like most of its general improvements over Cabal, but there is one thing that I think really drags it down. As far as I can tell, the only way to get extra lives is randomly from the can you can juggle around in every stage, and it's quite rare when it actually happens. Vastly prefer Cabal's score-based extra life system.

But perhaps you don't even need extra lives since the game throws dynamite at you like candy anyway.

 No.21246

Finally got around to playing Quake. Nice to get some speedy action after playing so many modern letdowns in a row. The nailguns are the most satisfying machine guns I've ever used in a video game.

 No.21247

Live-a-Live for the snes. While I feel gideonzhi's translation is kinda off sometimes (You're cruisin' for a bruisin' gramps!) I just beat the knight stage and was completely taken by surprise with the ending.

 No.21248

File: 1454841310027.png (39.92 KB, 576x448, 9:7, Parodius stg8.png)

Trying to beat Parodius Da!

This game has a real sneaky adaptive difficulty system that makes it gradually become a lot harder the more Speed Up power-ups you use and any time you have a shield out. You basically have to play the game through on one Speed Up without a shield to prevent the last few stages from becoming too difficult. The ice stage and this spot in particular is some lame shit. When you fly underwater it gimps your speed so you're pretty much forced to use an extra Speed Up if you want to survive it.

 No.21249

>>21247

I've been thinking about playing through that myself recently. How does it compare to Square's other SNES RPGs? I heard it was kind of shallow since you never get to hold onto your party members or something. Kind of defeats the point of character progression to me.

File: 1454841914781-0.png (651.19 KB, 500x582, 250:291, 1410812071140.png)

Been playing two games lately. Shadow Hearts: Covenant has been really neat, if slightly a clusterfuck at times, and I do hope most if not all the advancements in combat do carry over to From the New World, which I plan to play next. Just got through the optional Doll House dungeon (some abandoned mansion in Japan previously owned by some doll maker); shit was fucking creepy.

Also been playing Sands of Destruction. It has some issues to be sure, but it's been pretty enjoyable (to me, anyhow). I do hope turning in those 30 Green Shards or whatever were actually worth doing, mainly because the guy doesn't just give you the thing he's making with them right then and there. Stuck having to wait until later to pick it up.

>>21247

Which version of the patch are you using, out of curiosity? Just wondering since to my knowledge it actually has a 2.0 version; not sure how much would be changed from the initial 1.0 release off the top of my head though (and that's if the script itself even got revised and it wasn't just a bugfix/interface translation revision). Still in my backlog.

 No.21251

>>21249

You've got 7 characters, you need to complete their story to unlock the 8th (knight). All stories are played somewhat differently but none of them are long, perhaps that's what you meant by not holding onto your party members.

The level cap is low and you shouldn't take more than a couple of hours per story.

All stories are joined in the finale even though they span across different eras.

>>21250

2.0 according to this readme file I didn't delete. Looking closer at the patch history it does say "script fully rewritten and expanded" which is ominous to say the least.

I want to believe he didn't change anything because I'm nearly done with the game.

 No.21252

>>21251

Might be interesting to do a check of the scripts between, say, the first hour of the 1.0 and 2.0 versions to see a potential sample how much was changed. While fan translators can be decent about knowing how to keep their English script close to the Japanese one (rather than change and rewrite shit willy-nilly), some do wind up aiming for a more "localized" feel to them. Not sure what the case is there.

 No.21253

>>21248

Seriously, fuck this stage.

 No.21254

>>21252

It's probably the case given how much the readme praises 2.0 as the definitive version. I do recommend people to give it a try partly because I'm enjoying myself with the game and partly because I want to see some fresh OC about it.

Except mecha stage. Fuck mecha stage and its retarded story.

 No.21255

>>21254

I'd give it a try if I wasn't already bogged down with the backlog. Still, since I usually try to play one handheld and one console game at a time (that ay I at least make progress through stuff), I might try playing it on my PSP (when I finish Sands of Destruction) if it emulates well there.

 No.21256

>>21255

I tried using my PSP to emulate but it seemed to have trouble handling SMT1. Can I bug you for emulator names?

I was using picodrive and snes9xeuphoria

 No.21257

>>21256

Double checking what I'm using, it looks to be "Snes9xTYLmecm 0.4.2 Mod Rev.26".

Admittedly though, my experiences with SNES emulation on the PSP are rather limited; bit disappointing to want to play Breath of Fire II with the retranslation patch, only for the emulator to shit the bed in trying to boot it up (I'd guess it dislikes the opening the retranslation patch adds), and as far as I know, SNES emulation on the PSP is still a bit finicky depending on what a game needs.

These days I'd prefer to try to get stuff like that working on my modded Wii instead, but it's nice being able to play something old on the go and be able to take it to a friend's house and show them (which can help get them to branch out a bit in my experiences; part of why I'd like to see if it might work reasonably well on the PSP being that I want a friend to get more interested in playing fan-translated games we never got here, since at the moment he just sticks with what games the west saw for the most part, barring cases like Castlevania: Rondo of Blood).

I just played the shareware version of Doom for the first time.

I'm probably gonna get it on GOG, since I'm too lazy to pirate.

I guess I'll get Ultimate Doom and Doom II+Final Doom.

Any recommendations, /bestvidya/?

What is it about Doom that makes it so much better than other fps? Even something like Serious Sam is so much less fun.

 No.21272

>>21269

I think part of it is that Serious Sam puts too much emphasis on fighting large armies in open arenas and not enough on setting up interesting encounters taking advantage of the different enemy, weapon types, and terrain.

 No.21273

>>21272

I actually think that pretty much sums up my complaints about Serious Sam. The hordes of enemies aren't nearly as interesting to fight as the demons lurking around every corner in doom. The game never really (at least from what I played of it) sets up any meaningful traps or hides its secrets in an interesting way. I think it was a really good idea to hide some of the secrets at the end of passageways filled with lava or acid. It's enjoyable to take the risk to journey to the end to see if something good was there.

File: 1455033656276.png (4.36 KB, 576x448, 9:7, We Love Gradius I.png)

>>21248

Whew, finished. Fun game. Not as hard as Gradius II or III, in spite of the fact that you only get two 1ups and its adaptive difficulty system is pretty dickish. Once you understand how the adaptive difficulty works though it's not so bad, and it's nice that you can recover from a death just about anywhere in the game.

 No.21275

Juts got started on Gothic 2 (I'm barely 10 minutes in). Good to see that they fixed some of the glitches from the first game. Also, it's weird to have a different voice actor for the main character.

 No.21276

File: 1455043801188.png (184.25 KB, 648x482, 324:241, fallout character.png)

I've been trying really hard to give Fallout a fair chance lately, in spite of my general loathing for click-to-move RPGs. So far I am still unimpressed. The combat system is really tedious shit because there's all these little animations that have to play out every time you any little thing, and you can't run in battle so every movement action is slow as fuck. Also don't like that every time you want to barter with someone you have to wait on this dumb little dropdown animation to switch between the talk and barter interface.

Anyone know what the most overpowered stat to invest in is? I'm just loading up on Barter at the moment since I have no idea what weapon skills to invest in. Is becoming an Unarmed combat expert at all a good idea? Would love to be a stylin mad monk.

 No.21277

>>21276

Apparently once you get your Barter skill to 101% you can basically fleece people out of all their belongings by giving them a trade in your favor and then trading that shit back to them even more favorably… over and over until they have 1 bottle cap left. lol, what a broken stat.

I've been playing through the Suikoden series, halfway through 3 at present. It's okay, not nearly as good as 1 and 2.

I know to skip 4, not sure how 5 and Tierkreis will be.

 No.21282

>>21276

I honestly agree. I really like New Vegas because it has some cool stuff going on without being a confusing isometric RPG.

I find it really hard to enjoy isometric RPGs in general. They all suffer fro "where do i go syndrome" where that pile of junk is actually the water chip or some important thing, but is in no way labelled differently from other junk.

I am not a fan of "quest arrows" but I do like it when key objects are clearly defined so you don't miss them or throw them away.

 No.21284

>>21281

I've heard Suikoden 5's pretty decent aside from load times (and prices if you want an actual copy of it; shit was like $40 complete last I checked) or something, but to be fair, it's still a series I need to play, so maybe take that with a grain of salt.

 No.21285

>>21282

The worst part about the perspective in Fallout is how shit behind walls is constantly hidden from view and you have to move your character to every single corner just to be sure you don't miss something important.

I been playing HW:Deserts of Kharak…….

I honestly have never been as disappointed with a sequel (well prequel) than with this

The game looks like shit but its incredibly unoptimized so despite the bad quality it still takes tons of power to run. The gameplay is shit, its like they took the previous games and left only the bad parts, nothing makes any sense

The only good parts are the cutscenes, nuff said

I also been replaying GTAV and while its a great game I feel its too fucking short specially compared to GTASA

File: 1455509359057.jpg (42.3 KB, 640x440, 16:11, Majora's Mask.jpg)

>>21276

I'm beginning to realize this game has some striking parallels with Majora's Mask. They're both games with a lot of optional character-building side content which hardly amounts to much in the end. The problem is the games are so short and not particularly challenging (random Game Over crit bullshit in Fallout aside) that there is little real incentive to go after the side content aside from completionism's sake.

Seriously, Fallout has like four or five dungeons in total. Very disappointing amount of meaty game content. I can't believe a game with money to hire a whole bunch of Hollywood talent for voice acting is so anemic in content at the end of the day.

So I moved on to Fallout 2 now. I'm liking most of the improvements, but does anyone know where I can find some damn Mentats? I have a perk I'm waiting on a Mentat to fulfill the PE requirement and I've been through like six or seven towns now without finding a single one to pick up or buy.

I am also frustrated by the fact that it seems like there's no shops that regenerate their money in this one. I have all this crap I've been lugging around to sell off but I can't get rid of it!

>>21322

Holy hell I've been using one of the worst guns for roughly 75% of the game and I couldn't figure out why my damage was complete garbage the whole time. A consequence of ammo damage modifiers actually working in Fallout 2 (they didn't in the first game) is that this gun goes from great to a complete piece of shit on account of the only ammo type available for use in it cutting its listed damage in half.

This whole choose-your-ammo-type shit has really been nothing but a needless headache in both games.

 No.21351

>>21322

Fallout 2's world isn't really one where there's meant to be a lot of currency floating around. Usually you just trade your extra heavy stuff for ammo/meds, especially stimpaks. That said, Vault City, NCR, and especially San Francisco have a lot of money across their shops.

Probably the easiest place to get Mentats would be Renesco's in New Reno, if my memory is serving me right.

 No.21352

>>21351

Yeah I finally did find some mentats in the very southernmost areas. Renesco doesn't sell any, sadly.

The fact that stores don't carry around a lot of money to barter with triggers my 'tism like crazy because I feel the need to only sell weapons off to stores that sell them in the first place. Unfortunately, the majority of those stores don't carry dick for money. Thank goodness for this car trunk at least, my party members just aren't cutting it for pack mule purposes.

Holy shit that was a stupid finale. All that high-tech weaponry to collect in the final areas like it was building up to something… when you can just walk through the whole area in power armor and nobody will attack you! Even if I did a low intelligence playthrough there wouldn't have been any more fighting there beside the final boss. I guess it turns out this game has the same stupid problem that the first game had which I described here

So is this one a full-on action game like Contra or does it have a lot of exploration like Cave Story again?

 No.21368

>>21367

It's very linear but it does have some degree of discovery through secrets. And there are three playthroughs you can do, the second having the most conventional secrets and the third having the most interesting ones.

I'm not sure I'd compare it to Contra as it has upgrades you can buy and is too forgiving, but of the two it has more in common with Contra as far as its gameplay (ignoring the weapon design).

 No.21380

YouTube embed. Click thumbnail to play.

I replayed Vanquish from start to finish yesterday, it was one of those totally awesome games that casualfags didn't give two shits about because there wasn't a massive campaign of spam pushing the game and the gameplay itself while not hard it does have a learning curve and demands attention, there's no one-button attacks with auto-aim, if you melee an enemy you have to lock on it first else you kick the air, same with the guns there's none of that cover+autoaim shit from other games of the time, even good ones like RDR

But again nobody gave a shit about that game, paid shills at blogs weren't paid that time so they gave it minimal coverage and as always didn't play it while just watching the trailers and complaining about how cheesy the script was, because they don't even know who Platinum games is.

Lately some LPs have been discovering the game so its finally getting some attention so here's hoping PG makes a sequel, this time with a PC version

Just a hint to anyone playing it, the shotgun is not the shotgun. That is, the gun that shoots the big ass short range energy ball is the shotgun because the shotgun itself has no fucking power whatsoever.

Myself I've been playing the Brigmore Witches dlc for Dishonored. Adds three levels two of which have multiple areas between them. I have to say I'm not getting why people thought the game was shit, possible undue comparison with Thief but Dishonored would bear a greater similarity to Deus Ex, since their is no preference between combat or stealth. The addon adds the ability to purchase favours around the map which is very good, adding to replayability and allowing you to do something with you money apart from sink it into ammunition (which you don't need if you're stealthing). Could have been more interesting with restricted money but casuals. Levels are well designed with at least a couple of different ways to get to your target. Love the corrupted bone charms, especially the one that reminds me of the worm mind implant in SS2. The art direction on the last level of Brigmore is Gorgeous. In one of the levels you find a note saying that two gangs are fighting in the prison where you are sent to break someone out. You can then lie to a cellmate and tell him you're here to kill her and he'll tell you exactly what cell she's in, breddy gud.

All in all this faggot rates it as solid-good. Far better than your Bioshocks but no Deus Ex, play it if you like these sort of games.
