I recently got a PS2 slim basically for free. When I was growing up my parents kept the house Nintendo-only since they felt like it was the most childsafe consolemaker. Are there any hidden gems you loved as a kid I should try? Do you know of any good resources for hard or softmodding the thing?

>>4515There's a few must-plays that aren't listed in
>>4520
>FFXLast good Final Fantasy game. Not as good as 7 or 9 but the combat is top notch and the story isn't as shit as 8.
HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA-HA
>Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance 1 and 2Surprising that the only good Baldur's Gate games ever to be released were console exclusives. They're top-down 3D hack'n'slash games and are fucking amazing.
>Devil May CryStill better than every sequel that has followed. It has atmosphere in spades and is much less over the top and ridiculous than the games that came after it. Even if you don't really like the genre you'd probably enjoy it.
>Silent Hill 2For better or for worse, the PS2 version is considered the definitive edition. Every other release has massively fucked it up in one way or another. You don't need to have played any other SH game to understand it; it's fully self-contained and is an EXCELLENT survival horror experience.
>Timesplitters 2Still probably the best FPS ever to be released on consoles. Legendary art style, tight controls, hilarious in ways you might not expect; and it features full campaign coop if you're into that sort of thing.
>Jak and DaxterEasily one of the most charming adventure games you'll ever play, right up there with Banjo Kazooie.
>Resident Evil 4Still widely considered to be both the best Resident Evil game ever released, and the game responsible for killing off the series.
No.4557
Space Channel 5 hasn't been listed. Must play if you like rhythm games.
>>4540>>FFX>Last good Final Fantasy game.FFXII was good but I think this is our differing opinions. I can see why people wouldn't like it - there's a number of annoying things about it.
>the combat is top notchSo good it was used again in LOTR: Third Age.
No.4578
Well most Generation 6 games went there, as well as maybe the biggest exclusive library with tons of decent remasters, remakes and original titles
You asked for hidden gems so let me suggest some hidden gems, even when they are mentioned quite often (famous "hidden" gems)
>Onimusha trilogy
Not really hidden because they sold high but i think the series was forgotten unfairly
In short it's a samurai series with heavy overtones of magic and monsters, made by Capcom and features still camera positions much like Resident Evil
>Blood Will Tell
SEGA take on the previous thing, sold like shit and isn't quite as polished but it's worth it if you liked that theme. It's about a dude who got most of his body parts stolen and he's going on a rampage to reclaim them
>Disaster Report & Raw Danger
Pretty decent games, its PAL and NTSC covers make it look like shovelware but they are actually very good survival games. Note the lack of horror in survival, these games are about being men and surviving natural disasters on an artifical island that is started to feel nature's hatred, it's not about zambees.
>Downhill Domination
SSX with bikes and without that much charisma, but it does the job if you like bikes, flashy levels and fun
>Echo Night: Beyond
Rather unique survival horror game, this time it's not zambess but spoopy ghosts, not in a forest or a city but on a space station, and instead of them biting you they spook you and it damages your mental health instead of your physical one.
>God Hand
Not really hidden nor underrated here but it deserves a mention on how it was treated, it commands some pricey numbers but it's worth it. Imagine DMC being a brawler and with a more comedic story.
>GunGrave 1 and Overdose
Decent little games about TPS action in flashy and somewhat cuhrayzee levels.
The animu was based from this and not the other way around so expect it to play like a game instead of an adaption with gameplay levels.
>Legend of Kay
Surprisingly good platformer with action sequences, one of the last of its kind, the typical furry action adventure kind. Charming art direction in the levels.
>Maximo series
Inspired by the Ghost n Goblins series, this take on that universe but in 3D is about a beardless manly man trying to rescue his gril from a bad dude. The same thing but in 3D. Great stuff
>The Mark of Kri and Rise of the Kasai
Another surprisingly good action adventure game but this one is not about an E for Everyone cat in a chinese warrior outfit, this one is about a polynesian dude butchering villages M-rated style, even with a similar cartoonish art direction.
>Mister Mosquito
You play as a fly searching for delicious blood from a family in a house. What's not to like.
>Neo Contra
Contra manchilds despised this back then and today but it's a very good game that only suffers from being released after Shattered Soldier, thus contrasting heavily with the themes. This one is a comedic take with several different camera angles instead of the gritty, traditional Shattered Contra.
>Okage
Charming little actiony RPG with cartoonish art about a demon king possesing the shadow of a little kid in a peaceful village and going into his crusade to dominate the world.
>Smuggler's Run
USA-Mexico border simulator, you play as a mercenary doing suicide runs in several buggie vehicles on the desertic and mountainous border of a region. Tough driving game
>Splashdown: Rides Gone Wild
Wave Race Blue Storm but with dynamic SSX levels and good
>Tokyo Xtreme Racer: Drift 2
A game centered only on Tōge racing, that is, drifting on mountains with ricer cars.
Basically the same as Drift 1 but with improved graphics and a little more content.
>Urban Reign
Very polarizing game back then and today. A brawler about a mercenary fighter who is hired to enforce power in a city hood but then he slowly succumbs to a mysterious plot.
Back then it was seen as a quick cash-in shovelware title that never varies in gameplay and had a lackluster story, something the mainstream still says.
Today it's seen by some people who discuss games as a very good brawler that did its job just right despite some flaws and they even go as far to say it had a very finely written minimalistic story (rarely seen) and main protagonist (this was even explained with arguments by a dude who seriously analyses video game plots)
I think it's just a good game worth its commanding price of 5 bucks
>War of the Monsters
Tribute to the old monster movies, a little mix of fighting, platforming and general comedic fun.
Similar to the Godzilla fighting games

I have a question; does anyone know the best place to get a PS2 memory card in this day and age? About a year ago I bought an old phat PS2 from a thrift shop along with all the PS2 games they had (shiiiit, MGS2/3 and FFX/X-2 for 99c each?) - but it only came with PS1 memory cards, not PS2 ones for whatever reason. I'd imagine I can get them on eBay or Amazon if I wanted to; but my experience with some other retro consoles tells me that there is ALWAYS a better, enthusiast place to find crap like this.
No.4583
>>4580In terms of small and plentyful hardware i think your best bet is Amazon
It's true there some hobbyists places that deal greatly with this but i think they are more about specialtym if you are looking for that special controller converter, that modded memory card, those special meories to move your stuff ot the PC
For something so basic i think Amazon has you covered enough unless you can find a local retro store by yourself. Be warned, they might also charge you more for being a retro store only (but i guess you did know that already)
No.4585
>>4580If you have a local used game store be sure to check it first since that's where I've gotten most of my PS1 and PS2 memory cards. But I've also bought from Amazon, they're just more expensive usually.
No.4601
>>4583>>4585Alright, thanks. Now that I think about it I completely forgot about this one chain of stores that I found while in Texas visiting family; they have a website, and I should've just checked there. If they don't have anything then I'll check the local store, and then go with Amazon as a last resort.
No.4783
>>4515There's a lot of hidden gems, and must-plays, too, around when the library is one of that size (though of course, at least some amount is going to be shovelware too, but I suppose that applies to most systems). Really just depends on what genres you like (which would probably be useful to mention as far as getting some suggestions).
As far as modding, I don't know if many people offer hard or softmod services for it anymore (where I live people sure don't). You might want to look into Free Mc Boot though.
>>4578>Echo Night Beyond>Blood Will TellI wish I could get those myself, but I don't see either around much, and Blood Will Tell is a bit pricy for a PS2 game at $40 last I looked.
>>4580>>4601As a heads up in terms of what to pay, I know one local chain where I live sells PS2 memory cards for about $6-8 each. I've also heard it's best to stick to the official 8mb ones (to be honest, I find it kind of silly that they never opted to make official cards with bigger memory sizes as the gen went on; looking at the Gamecube, Nintendo had I think 3-4 different sizes of memory card and the last one could hold a LOT of data), as the offbrand ones with larger memory size are supposedly prone to corrupting easily.
>Thrift Store.>With actual (albeit pretty common) video games that aren't shovelware or movie games.Lucky.
No.4823
>>4783I still find very surprising that there's no big push for memory cards with PC connectivity to backup your stuff
Dreamcast had it, Xbox had it, i think there's one for the Gamecube in the form of GameShark
I think it will be urgent in the near future, especially for the Nintendo 64 games, the battery inside wont last forever and there's no good memory cards for it other than the tiny offical one
No.4842
>>4783Yeah, the thrift store is usually pretty hit or miss.
One time it had the PS2 with the aforementioned games; the other all they had was Reader Rabbit PC games. Once they had a copy of Mega Man X Collection.
Which you better believe I bought. No.4860
>>4842I've heard the PS2 version of Megaman X Collection isn't quite as good as the Gamecube version, but I don't know. Would certainly help explain the pricing difference though (beyond "Gamecube tax" or whatever you want to call the price hikes that even multiplat games on the Gamecube have).
Thrift stores (and pawn shops, Savers, Goodwills, etc) where I live are all terrible if you're looking for decent video games. If they do get anything, I'd swear resellers make daily rounds and buy up anything worthwhile to hock on ebay (and with Goodwill, I've heard they opened store on the east coast that specializes in video games, or at the very least, electronics, and they charge full price; wonder how long until they're just left with copies of madden and the like). Still, having a nice small video game chain around where I live is great (prices and selection are decent, employees there are helpful and tend to know what they're talking about, etc), and there's also another small chain that only has a small interest in video games where you can get some great deals on games occasionally when they screw up prices. Looking at the PS2, I've gotten Suikoden V for $18, Shadow Hearts: FtNW for $12, DBZ BT3 for $12, Xenosaga Episode III for $12, Yakuza 2 for $12, and Wild Arms ACF for $18 there. Really a good reminder to not be discouraged by a store being more miss than hit, as the times they "hit" can really pay off if it's a game you're wanting to play but not pay outrageous prices for.
>>4823You mean like a device that could read the save progress on the cartridge/memory card and copy it over, allowing you to replace the battery or whatever, and then upload your old save data back onto it, or something?
No.4891
>>4860Sorta, a memory card/cart with an USB/something entry
You save to the memory, detach it, connect it to the PC via USB cable and copy the data inside.
Dreamcast had the Nexus memory card, but more recently i've seen SD card converters that work as a memory card
Xbox had the official memory card that can be easily modded to have an USB port, and the machine's HDD can be hooked to a PC
The GameCube GameShark had a cable entry to connect it to the PC, i was always scaried of it because it burned down 2 computers, glad they were not mine, but anyways it can work to do that

was Black better or worse on PS2 compared to Xbox? That was a rather unique and fun game, impressive for it's time.
I also suggest early burnout games. Heck, even Revenge was on PS2, although most agree that Burnout 3 Takedown was the best in the series.
Mercenaries was great, although I think the PS2 version was not as good as the Xbox version.

Although it will be hard to find, Suikoden III and V are pretty good games and some of the best jRPGs from that era and IMHO, they can only be matched by other heavy-hitters like Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne and Persona 3. If you are in Europe you are fucked with Suikoden III though unless you mod-chip your PS2 or you emulate it.
The games are full of of things to do, 108 characters to recruit and top-notch story-telling and music - although the graphics aren't exactly the best due to the shitty budget Konami gave the dev team.
Suikoden IV is also a good jRPG but sub-par when compared to the rest of PSX/PS2 Suikoden-series although when combined with Suikoden Tactics (its direct sequel, also for PS2) the combined experience is pretty pleasant.
Also, I definitely recommend going back to PSX and play Suikoden II (and Suikoden I, too) - you can get them on PSN for ps3, but if you can't then fuck it and emulate them because they are rare as fuck and used copies go for over $100 thanks to collectors.
>>14736
Eh, if you want to play Last Blade 2 you're better with Neo Geo emulators. Not only the PS2 port has some input delay, but with Fightcade you can play online with a pretty good netcode (Although be ready because you'll be playing mostly Mexicans and Brazilians).
Also, you can set an emulator like Mame or Kawaks to console mode and use the training mode to practice stuff.

In my experiences, Suikoden III's not real hard to find (I'd simply say it's slightly uncommon) and doesn't cost a lot more than $20 complete here (which is pretty fair for a lengthy JRPG, provided it's a good one, that didn't see a massive Final Fantasy size print run). Suikoden V though shows up a lot less frequently and where I live averages a good $40-45.
Shame Konami has kind of abandoned the series, but considering they finally got Suikoden II on the PSN (both in Japan and the west), and had copyrighted Suikoden III for the PSN in Europe from what I heard recently, perhaps they've seen reason to revisit the series, and maybe one day start making new entries for it again.

I didn't said it was great neither it was neither among the best jRPGs out there, I said it's good. It has some problems like the pacing, the boat controls and seafaring being annoying as fuck but it's entertaining and compared to the amount of shitty jRPGs out there it's certainly above the average.
It's a flawed but overall enjoyable experience and with the fleshed out plot and characters in Suikoden Tactics the whole Island Nations-thing was quite good. Also, I'm a 100% sure if the title it had wasn't Suikoden IV it wouldn't have receive half the flack it gets.

Setting aside all the shit NISA cranks out, I'm having a hard time thinking of a PS2 JRPG from an established franchise that's as bad as Suikoden 4.
If the title wasn't Suikoden 4, you're right that it wouldn't have gotten nearly as much flack, because it wouldn't have gotten that much attention in the first place - it would just be another forgotten piece of shit PS2 JRPG, like Ephemeral Fantasia or… Actually, I'm having trouble thinking of another game that flat-out bad. >no mention of THE TAPE MOD FOR PLAYING PS1 GAMES SWAP
my nigga peel off the warranty slip, take a screwdriver or something else and ply those weird squares off the bottom, unscrew that shit, open the mother fucker up, and tape down the two little switches you see with electrical (one's at the back left of the flip top, you'll feel it if you're fumbling around with your finger and something gives, the other one is above the power button), unscrew the disc brake (it's not important, it just makes the disc stop spinning quicker but is best as an anti piracy tool so GET THAT SHIT OUT OF THERE) (which is the white thing you see rubbing against the disc when you open the flip top).
So now what you do is you take a real PS1 game (if you don't have one buy some 99 cent shit at your pawn shop or fuckiunno it doesn't have to be a good game) and burn a pirated one and you go to the "Browser" (don't get excited it just looks through the system memory) and put the disc in. You'll have to fudge to get it to think there's a disc which I will elaborate on below but once it thinks there's a disc it'll start spinning, hover over the icon labeled "PS1 disc", swap, (you can take your time, really, without the sensors it's a cold day in hell before it notices the laser isn't picking the verification code up any more) and you're playing PS1 games at the cool price of a CD per game (or more for shit like Xenogears). Another thing you can do which needs better timing but no fudging the sensor tape is let the console autoboot and swap when the PS1 jingle starts doing that droning thing. I recommend closing the lid at this point because it makes sure the sensors don't decide they're not down any more and if you placed your tape right and you're really lucky it'll detect that the top has been opened when you open the top. This arrangement CAN prove to be a problem in games requiring that you open the lid and put in a new disc in the middle of a session like RPGs and MonRanch, but you can just take the top half off and fumble with the back sensor until it thinks you've opened the lid and then put it back the way you found it to make it think you closed the lid.
It's what I did. There's more in depth guides on it but I ran down a crash course. Shit is so cash.

Definitely the best game I ever played as a kid. It really deserved more popularity than it ever got.

Could never get into that one. No particular reason; it was a decent game, just not my sort of thing.

It's also worth noting that game had full 480p, widescreen support, and if I remember right surround sound.
I burned a copy for all it's sweet tech features but got sucked in to playing it pretty hard after that.
Solid recommendation.

I don't really know what to make of this one, been playing it for 30 min and it seems kind of slow, but I guess thats how most Japanese horror games are.
I guess if you're really into horror games this is a must get for sure.

Most recommended PS2 games are highly disappointing imo, but I greatly enjoyed God Hand and Nocturne. If there's ever a PS2/Gamecube multiplat it looks and runs awful on PS2.

What do they typically site as being the disappointing bits?
I only rented Phantom Crash, but fucking adored the soundtrack and amount of customisation. I'd like to go back to it, but I no longer have a HUEG…

Honestly can't remember. I don't own a huge either, but I do plan to get one. There's a guy on /v/ who makes weekly xbox threads. Try asking there. I'll do the same and report back.

That doesn't have camera control does it?
Looks fun from what I can tell. Not sure what that knight character's defense/mobility options are.
