You know, I find it hysterical that Willis continues to rag on Funky Winkerbean. I mean Funky is a depressing slog through melodramatic human misery BUT THEN SO IS DUMBING OF AGE!

Oh, but Willis' drama in DOA (and Shortpacked which was just DOA in a toy store) is all about how hard it is to be gay and a woman and a minority (real problems, not like that cancer shit). When he goes on and on with stories about kids running away from home and their abusive parents or being confused and in turmoil over their sexuality (over and over), it's quality writing.

Plus he then throws in a story about some fat fuck dressed as a superhero so it all balances out.

As for the other tweet, I don't know if anyone ever said it's good that kids get shot for having toy guns (though it is possible). I do know many people won't give a fuck in this day and age about kids getting shot because they pointed their toy gun at a cop, and are starting to find it a little inconvenient that people can't keep their brats under control (I would think the police are getting sick of it)

I'm not surprised that Willis blames everyone else for this. I can't wait for his kid to grow up into a giant jock and Willis has to rationalize his giant Transformer collection is why the kid couldn't have a college fund.

I just realized we never saw Willis' response to this.

One of Dick Grasper's most notorious bits was the False Equivalency strip, which fat feminists and desperate white knights blasted all over tumblr like screeching whining shrapnel.

Being so widely distributed, there was also a wide range of people exposed who happily pointed out what bullshit it was. Basically that it's hard to believe women don't find big muscly men attractive when they're constantly featured and described as such in tons of media made by women for women. Also how would Mr. Willis know what women really want anyway?

Luckily. Willis is here with a handy explanation. It's the PATRIARCHY, forcing those men on covers, forcing women to continue buying those books, and I suppose, continue dating and fucking men who look like this.

At this point, I really think the only person he is trying to convince is himself. Willis still clings to the hope that if he, at least, loses a little of his massive girth, he COULD look like the men he wants to believe women lust over.

I pasted a piece of an old movie review, this all reminded me of, to illustrate a point. I've read comments like this before and the poster below makes a point of it as well. Yes, we know people act like this in real life. People are capable of the most unbelievable shit.

However, in fiction, where you need to keep a willing suspension of disbelief, you can only write certain things certain ways before someone calls bullshit.

Maybe if Willis was writing a straight-forward coming of age tale where the story is the girl and her abusive father, we can more willingly accept this behavior since it is the primary thing the story is about.

But when you plunk real life stuff in the middle of silly bullshit with people is costumes hanging off the backs of cars and autistic girls acting like Raptors, it becomes too much to take seriously. The "real" stuff get dragged down to the level of the dumb shit. Like when superhero comics try to have political issues discussed by grown men in silly costumes. The context is important. You can't just argue that it happens in real life, so there.

I guess we should be thankful that Willis only acted snooty and didn't slam the ban hammer. Though he did make sure to suggest that he's touching people with his real life writing and suggesting otherwise is just a bad thing to do. Personally, I wouldn't hold up the declarations of triggered fans as any kind of approval. These are the same people that flip their shit because Steven Universe characters were drawn wrong.

I can imagine a DOA reader screaming "Yes, this is just like when came out to my father as an other-kin and he told me that I'm 35 and need to get a job."

This brings up another question I have.

Is it good or bad to actively engage your audience they way these people do?

There was a time when an artist put out his work and that was it. Audiences read it, drew their conclusions and it was basically over. Maybe you'd get some interviews or commentaries where they'd explain their process, but it only fairly recently where you have such a real time back and forth between creators and the fans and I'm not sure how healthy that is.

On one hand, it can be a sort of crutch/cop out for creators, because they can immediately explain what they were going for and argue back against any criticism, essential doing in the comments what should've been done in the work. At worse, it turns them into a smug sourpuss who will never accept any criticism because they can immediately add/fix (in their responses) their work and deny they made a mistake, turning them into jerks like Willis or Dobson.

It can also be bad for creators because it puts them in the position where they are expected by fans to answer for their work. If a reader sees what he feels is a flaw or just something he doesn't agree with, the creator is supposed to actually explain himself and maybe even apologize. More often than not, the creator gets into more trouble by attempting to deflect this criticism, and only digs himself deeper by giving more ammunition to the critic. The less one says, the less anyone has to go on. The work has to stand on its own and that comes with plausible deniability on the part of the artist.

Personally I don't see any good in this kind of open communication. It erases a barrier between the two parties where there is the veneer of a real relationship but not really. It feeds too much into the ego of a creator where they know someone is hanging on their every word, and it can then backfire spectacularly when they stop saying what people want to hear. It changes the entire dynamic between creators of work and the audience, and turns it into something more co-dependent and less professional.

Just so we're not all dumb re-edits, lets talk, REALLY TALK, about Willis.

So 4 Chan has at least one thread where they're talking their own whack at, I guess, the conclusion to DOA's epic lesbian kidnapping plot. More telling, is how some people took it upon themselves to redo the strip so that it actually has some kind of nuance and feeling behind it. As opposed to the tumblr worthy end Willis slapped on for chuckles and ass pats.

This whole plot really was a illustrative moment in how bad comic writing has become. Willis is just one of many who take this approach. A silly plot cribbed from an episode of G.I. Joe, stuff some Social Justice talking points in there, Bingo, great writing.

So we had this bit, which Willis probably slobbered all over himself on, which included both school shootings and gay discrimination (by the religious), and even threw in some racial hand wringing near the end, all delivered in the least believable manner possible. Just explain the plot of this to someone who isn't familiar with DOA and see how they react.

Even on a purely adventure escapist level, it's a failure. Do we need to go over the crappy art, horrible layout, difficult to follow action? If he wanted to do something like a high speed car chase with gunplay and flipping, a four panel daily strip isn't the way to do it. Even his porn gets the full multiple page treatment.

And then it ends with the "victim" of all of this giving the standard "You Go Girl" middle finger.

But that's okay. Willis knows he's done good. He has a whole hugbox of people telling him how this story hit them on a personal level. And by now, everyone else knows it's pointless to even try to do anything but suck his dick in the comments section.

And this is the problem with writing in general. Willis isn't an isolated case. This is how they all are. On their own webcomics, and growing in the entertainment industry at large. It's Saturday Morning Cartoon level script peppered with SJ check boxes to flatter the twittertards. The only reason people like Willis, Tats, Diaz aren't enjoying Kate Leth levels of success is because they're the privileged class. Those kind of people obviously like him. The Mary Sue even had a masturbatory interview with him. I still wouldn't be surprised if Willis gets an actual writing job for Marvel or whatever based on this crap. Though his competition is steadily growing since we're not talking about difficult material to put out.

So Willis is a mod on the TFwiki. A wiki of all Transformers related crap. One page is Ruined Forever. Basically a joke page. It lists all the times there was a change or addition that made fans throw a fit and say it was going to ruin the brand forever.

Of course, Willis can't stop soapboxing ever and so had to make his own addition, highlighting people who complain about girl characters and kowtowing to Social Justice.

Now there may be people who do complain about this, but this also may be something that moves into flamebait material as some people in the discussion page brought up. They did not realize that you never question Willis and his buddies, especially when it comes to oppressed womens that they will protect at all costs. I think I get why there was a gap between these strips now. The first batch really was a bunch of cartoony antics with Tranny Girl and Mary fighting, like something out of a Tom & Jerry cartoon. But later, Willis got his ego on, remembered these earlier strips and realized he already has a setup for his stupid shit. This is why their motivations have all changed. Mary is now a transbashing jerk who ruined someones skates instead of a student who just wanted to study because they are in college, not the Real World house.

Sadly, this really is the state of colleges now. Trans Girl could've ran Mary over with her damn skates and Mary would still be exiled from the college because she screamed something triggering as it happened. And I guess if Mary just battered the fucking hell out of Tranny Girl, Ruth would mope around knowing just how she fucked up. Maybe she hoped that's what would happen so Mary could get tossed for hate-crimeing.

Of course Tranny Girl didn't do shit either despite how horrible the whole "boy" thing was. I guess when someone actually stands up to them instead of curling up into a fetal ball of guilt they're at a loss.

Because let's face it. The plot here hinges on us believing just how much a "punch to the solar plexus" this is for Carla, and how much horror people like Carla deal with day to day, blah blah blah.

Except Carla seemed generally shocked by the "boy" remark. She didn't get angry or yell back like someone who deals with these kind of insults all the time. She was shocked that somebody actually went there. She looked like Mary just pulled a gun on her.

And then there's her usually behavior, which is not at all sheepish or defensive in the way bullied people behave, but casually jerky in the way a brat behaves who is used to doing what they want.

I could argue that Carla is pretty used to getting away with her bullshit because people think she's a special creature that everyone just has to accept as opposed to a creep that needs to be told the world doesn't have to pull it's punches for her.

Also, isn't the SJW mantra on women how much they're victimized day to day too? Couldn't we just as easily look at Mary, a woman, asking someone (a male in funny clothes as far as she could tell) to stop misbehaving and being treated like her feelings don't matter. So I read that apparently this isn't the first time Mary has been all bigot-y. Granted, I only went back a month or so to see where the skate incident stems from. I didn't comb through 6 years of Dumbing. I mean, you would think a decent writer would remind readers of an obscure fact before adding to it.

But it's possible I was wrong. Mary could be a raving homophobe so I checked the archives. Luckily, Willis has her name tagged so finding all her appearances was easy.

Hmmm, let's see. Her first appearance has Ruth manhandling her, but that's okay. It's not a guy dragging her around. that would've been worse than rape. It's lovable Ruth who is seen terrorizing the whole gang and talking about how she'll fuck up people who don't follow the rules.

Later on, Ruth actually strikes Mary hard enough to leave a mark when Mary calls her out about NOT enforcing the rules. Well, Mary wasn't mis-gendered, that's the important thing. That hurts.

Mary also sees Ruth and fat chick are fucking and realizes what two faced shit Ruth is…

Here's the first time Mary and Carla are in the same strip though Mary doesn't actually say anything to Carla, just gets insulted… In fact Mary and Carla never interact until Carla starts harassing her with the damn skates.

Remember, it's funny when it happens to Mary because she's a snotty Religious type who needs the stick taken out of her ass. I bet Carla leaves bacon outside the door of the Muslim students too. Except Willis clearly wants us to side against Mary. He's mentioned in his comments how he views Carla vs how he views Mary, and people who defend her by association. heck the name of that particular strip is "Wrong".

Maybe Carla, he wants to think as a multifaceted character, but Willis wants everyone to see Mary as evil, black and white. He probably looks at Carla as black and white too, though he won't admit it. She's one of his many characters designed to appear to real life assholes who want to believe the world should put up with their bullshit because they can't help being so quircky and watch how you retaliate at them because THERE'S LINES YOU DO NOT CROSS."

Willis could've just wrote Carla feeding sick children with Mary goosestepping out of her door to "bash some queers", and it would've served the same purpose Willis was going for. Except writing Carla as a decent person would've make her less appealing to the fans.

None of this should matter. In the end, it's just supposed to be fantasy wish fulfillment which is why Willis has his fans. In that context, he really isn't doing anything wrong, just giving readers what they want.

Except (Again) Willis even fucks this up. Because he then goes after other creators who would want to provide fantasy wish fulfillment to their fans. He's the one that calls out people for writing Starfire wrong, and drawing women too sexy, and telling people what they should and shouldn't make, pretty much opening the door wide for people to come in and blast his own crap for the contrariety nonsense it is. Even he would just keep his damn mouth shut, he would be free to happily write any nonsense he feels like and nobody would really have any right to complain.

But that's what happens when you keep trying to stand on the highground. You instead wind up standing in the hole you dug yourself.

Of course, that meant he immediately ran out of ideas so we're back to the Carla/Ruth/Mary saga.

And yes, Ruth. Eventually breaking the rules will affect other people. Tis why you shouldn't do that. Glad you got that all figured out.

People in the comments already pointed out what I jumped to as well. That Mary HAS been physical on more than one occasion, to Mary a few times, in fact. Which makes Ruth worse than Slur Slinging Mary despite all the people with the "punch to the plexus" saying otherwise.

Oh, but it's okay. Mary deserved it because she's a bitch. And Ruth used to toss around fat glasses girl there too, but they're girlfriends now so that abuse was okay. Remember. In Willis' world, if it turns out they like it after the fact, it doesn't count as wrong.

Back to today's strip and it's LOL moments

Mary is GLEEFULLY throwing around trans phobic slurs (worse than a thousand genocides), Though I still maintain she wasn't too gleeful and was trying anything she could to get Carla to leave her the fuck alone.

"Collateral Damage" The floor is "unsafe". Thankfully, fat girl does call her out on that one. From what I've seen in previous strips, it was Ruth that everyone was living in fear of, not Mary. I think if you leave Mary alone, she won't bother anyone.

Not like Ruth who regularly threatens people and physically does things to them. And again, slurs fall beneath physical actions and verbal threat by an official on the wrong scale.

And not like Carla who GLEEFULLY races up and down the halls on her roller skates. Guess it's a good thing nobody has to walk those halls or anything. It's just there for Carla.

Now onto writing in general.

It's possible, possssssible, that Willis may see all this and is building up to some multifaceted drama. Ruth realized just how wrong she was all this time. Carla realizes that she was a creep and apologizes. Mary apologizes for her harsh words (just to be courteous), and everyone grows a bit.

Or, even further, other girls in the dorm express their feelings on Carla. Not only that she's a bitch, but that they are uncomfortable with a trans girl (a male) sharing their space. Given how Willis LOVES to be accurate to real life events, this would be in line with recent stories in the news. Again, Willis would have to write multidimensional characters who may share views all his readers don't agree with, and admit both sides have different points.

I'm less confident that will happen. Make his cast of characters unlikable? No, it will be the one character that nobody cares about be the sole voice of dissent in the most hateful manner possible so there's no doubt who is right and wrong. Just like in real life where despite hearing how people are oppressed constantly it's always some random loner who is doing all the bigotry.

I have a feeling that fat glasses girl will stomp down and threaten Mary in some you-go-girl triumphant way. She'll stymie Mary somehow, and Mary will be left impotently fuming and shaking her fist until the next time Willis wants to chomp at this bit.

Then Ruth and glasses girl's relationship will be out and everyone will decide they're just fine with it despite Ruth deserving nothing but hate from everyone. And Carla will be crowned homecoming queen and Mary will be banished to the neutral zone. Why the fuck not?

I forgot that Ruth was an alcoholic too. I really hate these people. Where's Crazy Dad? I miss him.

If you ever watch soap operas (are they still on anymore?), you'll notice that because new episodes are produced on a a near daily basis, and they're limited in budget, they have to stretch out a story arc for a good while. Sometimes for weeks. To give the impression that there's more going on, they'll jump back and forth between concurrent plots, just so you're not watching a couple people in the same room having the same conversation for five days.

This still really doesn't mitigate the fact that you're watching a scene go on and on. In fact, jumping back and forth drags it out to even more frustrating a degree.

I get why soap operas do it but there really is no reason why webcomics such as Sinfest and DOA do it. Other than the fact that, again, the writer doesn't really have much plot, and so will drag his one idea out for as long as possible. Being a better writer could fix that but well..

Anyway. I've been trolling the web to see what other people are saying about DOA. Surprisingly, 4 Chan occasionally rags on Willis work and I've found out a few things. One thing being that Joyce has a crossdressing brother because of course she does.

So lets review. Joyce and Becky the obnoxious lesbian are going to eat at the house of Joyces fundie parents. Dad seems to have mellowed a bit but we haven't caught up with mom yet. The crossdressing bother may also be there. Meanwhile, the evil lesbians are also talking about Becky connecting everything together.

Why I do believe we're coming onto a total vortex of victimizing that will make me smash my keyboard from the stupidity only to have the keys land, spelling out LGBTQ.

Also, there may be something about Willis' own Mom poisoning his brother, though I haven't found the actual post of that yet.

The Carla arc seems to be taking a different turn than I guessed.

So outsiders are squatting in the dorms, and a guy with a shotgun was terrorizing the students, and you were too busy being a drunk to keep up on things.

But a hint of trans slurring and you're on it like a hawk, cue the clapping from the DOA seals.

To be fair, some people in the comments are calling out some issues with all this. The fact that Ruth is supposed to give a speech to the students about the shooting incident and doesn't seem to know jack shit about it. Maybe because she's too concerned with stupid nonsense.

And if I'm calculating things correctly, the reason the shooter was rampaging on campus and putting innocent students as risk in the first place was because of the squatter that was there the whole time under Ruth's nose.

So we can blame Becky and Ruth, Maybe Joyce. Really everyone but Mary.

Also, this panel from the previous strip where, again, Willis tries for some eyes through hair thing that doesn't work at all (why does he keep pushing this). Are her eyes glowing? Is she a robot (a Transformer)?

If Becky is going to be a legitimate student, wouldn't she get her own dorm room? Wouldn't this stop being an issue anyway?

Of course, until Becky geeeeeeets around to that, Ruth will just let her crash in someone else's room without paying dime one. Meanwhile, Mary, a student that IS paying to attend the place has put up with all kinds of shit, and damn if Ruth will turn a blind eye to anything she does wrong. She's straight. Fuck her.

And for a change of pace let's check on… Becky.

I'm not sure what the joke is here but given that it's Becky saying it, it's probably some horrible lesbian sex joke, like how she wishes she was the one tackling Joyce and slobbering all over her, and pawing at her crotch.

Some people suggested it is a reference to something, but I'm not in the mood to excuse Willis' inability to write a joke today.

Incidentally, someone pointed out this tidbit back from the car chase arc. Here, Willis freely admits that he's warping his universe to pander to Becky (and idiots with her maturity). He's not doing it because he's a shitty writer though. He's doing it because he's heroically breaking down barriers for gay representation. How many other lesbian narratives have happy endings, besides every other webcomic out there, that is? He's buddies with Jeph Jaques and Kate Leth which says it all really on what a bullshit artist he is.

Obviously, another option for the lesbians to have happy endings would be to not have them be the ones that are put in shotgun car chase stories or misgendering roller skate nonsense in the first place. I went to college with one guy who came out of the closet at some point and he really was like this. Freshman year, you didn't know anything about him. Next year, his voice suddenly had the gay accent, gay themes found their way into his projects, he worked gay jokes into the conversation. It seemed to became his defining trait. I'm sure as he matured, he learned to settle down a bit. It was probably that he was finally embracing this side of himself and it dominated his mind for that time.

But it also speaks to the pandering Willis, who is way over college age, regularly settles for. One of my favorite defenses from DOA supporters is how the whole comic is about crappy people, less than perfect people, shades of grey and all that.

This will make everyone forget that up until now Ruth has been a tremendously awful person and deserves all of this. I'm curious if the fact that Ruth could've gotten away with her secret affair if not for Carla will ever occur to her.

Though I love it involves two characters we haven't seen in who knows how long, and certainly haven't been reintroduced in this whole arc. I'm ashamed I had to read the comments just to figure out who they were, and why this was supposed to be funny.

The point is that all this traumatic crap is happening closer together than it seems, as in every hour, a new life altering development is hitting these dopes. No wonder they're all so psychotic.

Becky the Asshole asks to come along with Joyce even though she already knows Joyce's mom is a fundie nut and Becky hates the town they live in. She does this instead of staying behind with a girl who is willing to fuck her.

I mean, I get that she is still holding out hope for a chance at Joyce's clam, but could Becky, maybe, exercise any thought outside of her own selfish stupidity. Maybe, she'd realize there's no real point in aggravating the situation between Joyce and her folks. Especially since both of them can't bum free room and board at the dorms like Becky's been getting away with all this time.

That, maybe, Becky the poor lesbian isn't the only one who is stressed out by their parents and that stuff like this would probably drive someone like Joyce to a nice 'ol nervous breakdown.

Bonus, Willis acting pouty because his mom didn't share his progressive views. I think his mom was actually insinuating that he would be better off if he attacked a cop like Michael Brown.

Oh BOY! Everyone favorite belligerent tranny has returned, as Willis cycles through his wheelhouse of characters. You know who we haven’t seen in a long while? The gay men. Where’s the gay men, Mr. Representation? When are we going to see some men who look like men making out? How am I supposed to read Dumbing of Age if there’s no character that represents MEEEEEEE!?

Carla’s return and the recent Biker Girl bit does make me wonder if Willis really is retarded. I don’t mean that as a flippant insult (Pleb Forever<3). I actually wonder if Willis is mentally challenged.

He tries to have these plots where you’re clearly supposed to see things a certain way. Transphobia is bad, racism is bad. But then, he sabotages himself by writing scenarios where things aren’t as cut as dry as he desperately wants them to be. Everyone was supposed to side with Carla over Mary but Dick Grasper wrote Carla as instigating and escalating the issue and then was surprised when readers didn’t unanimously cry for her. Now we have the Biker Girl drama with her parents not liking her because she’s not “white enough”, even though the mother in question is a white woman who MARRIED A BLACK MAN. She could’ve chose any number of white men to be racist with, but chose a man who would be what she supposedly hates. Actually, from what I read, he’s half black, meaning this isn’t even the first time interracial dating has occurred in the family. Why would there be any racism? I mean, there could be some issue with the mom, or the dad, or who knows. Still, wouldn’t the smarter thing to do would be to make both parents white and not want their daughter to act, what they feel is, stereotypical black because that’s beneath them? That would elicit the response he’s going for without any questions or confusion.

The reason I believe, though someone who has read DOA more regularly can freely correct me, is that Willis wrote these characters as one way, but is now trying to slot them into Oppression themed sagas like square pegs into round holes. They just don’t have the background and character for the black and white morality plays he wants to dump on people.

From what I remember, Mary was never bothering Carla in the first place. It was Carla that wouldn't leave Mary the fuck alone. Did Mary approach her even once? Even when Mary was bugging Ruth about the prayer in the meeting room. Carla hung around on her own, Mary didn't say two words to her.

This is what I mean. Does Willis even remember what he writes one day before churning our something the next? What is it with these people (Diaz, Willis, Leth)? They have no long term memory. They should tattoo their damn comics and tweets on their body like the guy in Memento.

It's the college's fault. They didn't built enough safe spaces with puppies so Amazi-Girl had no where to go when her PTSD kicked in.

So it turns out Walky being Biker Chick's twin does sperg Amazi-Girl out, but she doesn't know why. She doesn't realize she's looking at the twin brother of someone that makes her flip her shit every time. Superhero never bothered to even look up info on this girl even though she's had more than a few runs in with her.

Maybe all black people look alike to her, cause she's a dirty RACIST.

Really, this is why superhero comics are for children. You can't make them adult. As soon as you try to apply real world logic to it, they become ridiculous.

Such as the case here where we have a student that acts like a superhero and everyone looks at her like she's an actual superhero, but it's because of emotional trauma or something stupid and Willis is trying to actually focus on that and it's breaking the whole thing down.

If you wanted to look at this realistically, this girl would look like a total whack job in a made up costume. Unless Hollywood is working the effects, your costume is going to look like shit. Even cosplayers don't have outfits that can survive actual crimefighting.

So we have a girl running around dressed like a clown. Would anyone remotely realistic, let alone a boyfriend not have some doctors haul her off right away instead of gushing about how brave she is. If someone walked up to you in the wearing a jumpsuit and saying they're Superdude, wouldn't you think they're deranged? If they were a friend of yours wouldn't you get them desperately needed help? It would never go on as long as it does here.

This is because like everything else, Willis is caught between wanting to write kiddie crap, which is why he has a superhero in his college comic in the first place, and wanting to be a "serious writer" and so the kiddie crap turns adult and grotesque and you have a gay drama turn into a car chase with fat superhero girls punching out crazy shotgunning wielding dads on the highway.

If you want to be a good writer, even of children's entertainment you have to have self control. Enough to know what is applicable to your current project and what isn't. Willis has no self control. He's a overgrown child and his work represents the mindset of someone who is seeing real world problems but doesn't have the first clue how to deal with them.

I can definitely see him running up to someone in the streets in a superhero costume one day, while his kids try to have him committed.

"Gee Joyce. long time, no see. Sure you can bring your buddy to our family only lunch. I was going to tell everyone how I'm dying of cancer, but whoever you're bouncing around with can sit in on that too. What? She and Mom are already going a few rounds. Great! Even better! Because it' s all about you!"

Reminder that Shortpacked has its own collection of asshole Christian parents. In Willis' world, all people turn Christian when they hit 30, and lose their soul.

This bopping back and forth between Becky and Carla is making me hopeful that their stories will collide, and well see the battle royale over who is the most inconsiderate self- absorbed flake of all.
