If you are using a vpn, cant your isp still see how much data is being transferred? Can they single you out for torrenting for using a lot of data when connected to a vpn?
Is there a way around this?

It costs your ISP about $0.00001 per terabyte of data transferred. They'd rather you use up a fuckton of bandwidth and remain a customer than risk pissing you off. The only reason you don't want your ISP to know that you're transferring copyrighted material is that if they know what you're doing, the government or MPAA or someone might force them to give up that info, or forward some scary-looking letter to you.

OP, there are 2 concerns when torrenting:
Problem 1: ISPs or content producers join the torrent, note the IP of everybody seeding, and then send angry letters to the ISPs with the offending IPs. The ISP then forwards these letters to the person the IP corresponds to.
Problem 2: The ISP sees you're torrenting and so they throttle your torrents and/or the rest of your connection (you can get this resolved by complaining until they fix it)
Problem 1 is completely fixed by a proper VPN, but problem 2 (which seems to be what you're worried about) will probably also be fixed by a VPN.
If you suspect ISP throttling, run some speed tests between yourself and the VPN (the ISP can't tell these speedtests from torrent data - all they see is more encrypted bulk data transfer to/from the same IP)
If that speed test seems to be torrented, commence complaining. You're in the right, and your ISP will have to comply.

thanks for the responses. When I first started torrenting over a vpn a couple months ago I probably downloaded like 100+gb worth of animu in like 2 days.
I recently have made my network display the estimated data usage because I wanted to keep track of my torrenting since I was unsure if they would be alarmed at how much encrypted data is being transferred.
>>830I dont want to have to get to the point where they take action over my alleged torrenting but Ill keep this in mind. They cant prove shit anyway

the best they can do is packet sniffing, and even that, can be addressed by encrypting the connection between you and your vpn.
