What does /tech/ think about Discord?
I know there's a lot of hate for skype, qTox is getting there and TeamSpeak is not free, unless you're leeching off someone else's server.

I get that you want to promote your product, but this isn't the place to do it. Halfchan would be more receptive to these kinds of threads and that kind of software. We are concerned with privacy, we're concerned with Free software, and we're concerned about shilling, COINTELPRO, and things of that nature. You damage the image of your software in our eyes by making these types of threads.

Seems like they where first into mobile apps, selling a tablet only MOBA game exclusive to apple products. Making deals with huge company's like apple is usually a bad sign.

Alright for gaming and on-the-spot stuff; i.e the case I want to organize some pub game, can just link them the room to the Discord room with no hassle on getting them to download the client.
But I rather have something like Tox for general chatting, but weirdly no one ever uses it. I added a bunch of people from /g/, etc but they're almost never on. Not only that the Groupbot wasn't working and is now always offline.

Update your client.
I think something changed a while back, and old clients stopped being able to connect to new ones or something.

I'll be honest, Tox is fucking lackluster. It's like it got almost there, we have video chat, group audio, file transfer. And now they're not doing shit. Seriously, where the fuck is group video!?
That being said, at least it's open and encrypted, I'm not saying it's ultra secure and I would trust my life with it, but I WOULD trust it over something like Discord. You should distrust ANY proprietary VOIP related clients.

All the systems I know of use centralised servers to do the mixing. I can only imagine that the bandwidth needs of the clients would quickly become insane otherwise.

I tried to get people to use Tox for ages and it never stuck because it still (needs/needed) time in the oven. By contrast, I've been using IRC and XMPP via Cockmail to chat with friends and everyone's kept with it pretty well. Trying to get A/V to work has been unsuccessful, so I still keep skype on another machine for that, and in case old friends I don't talk to need to touch base. Although if >>539248 isn't bullshitting and group audio is a working thing, it might be worth another chance.
At the very least, I've managed to cut Skype out of my life enough to where I can keep it quarantined on its own machine. libpurple is shit, but I have yet to come across a better client than pidgin to use, especially with OTR, so I'm stuck with it at the moment. That's progress from a year ago, so I'll take what I can get.

Have you tried the skypeweb pidgin plugin? It may be chat only, but it's a nice way to still have skype on your main machine without the awful NSA garbage application.

I was tricked into installing Discord. Ok, not tricked, but tipsy and playing video games and Skype started fucking up.
I have to say, the voice quality is on par, orbetter then Skype - yet to see anything come close. Mumble and shit never works properly for me.
However, it feels really sluggish to use, options are hidden in unnatural places. Like auto-start is a checkbox you see when rightclicking the tray icon when Discord is active.
And everything is trying to be streamlined, so figuring out how to add friends you talked to, change rooms around, see where yhou are in a channel and so on is frigging hard.
I guess it's OK if you just use it talk with friends..
But other th en that, blaurgh
