This is basically Linux 101. nohup stops the application from receiving SIGHUP (which terminates the process) when terminal is closed.

Pretty sure redshift doesn't work when you close the terminal, check ps -e | grep redshift. You think it's working because it handles SIGHUP and SIGTERM differently (resetting display on SIGTERM and doing nothing on SIGHUP).

I know this is probably too autistic for you, but I also didn't like any alternatives. How I manage my notes:

~/Documents/Notes

Inside I have directories for categories/labels, then inside those are Markdown files. They are simple text files which can be nicely formatted in many different ways. I use SublimeText + plugin to format markdown files into HTML GitHub flavored style. You can do the same thing manually with GRIP utility. If you want something more vanilla use PANDOC.

The whole Notes directory is also a git repository so I have version control.

This setup is pretty flexible and you can easily sync to other devices via something like Syncthing.

We don't describe free software as an “alternative” to proprietary, because that word presumes all the “alternatives” are legitimate and each additional one makes users better off. In effect, it assumes that free software ought to coexist with software that does not respect users' freedom.

We believe that distribution as free software is the only ethical way to make software available for others to use. The other methods, nonfree software and Service as a Software Substitute subjugate their users. We do not think it is good to offer users those “alternatives” to free software.

MPV is a GUI, it's just not the same kind that windows users are used to.

MPC-HC makes the same mistake as vlc, which is that it packages its own codecs. The installer alone is 12.8MB, compared to mpv's 3.7MB when completely unpacked.

Also, mpv's IPC socket features make it unmatched when integrating it with other programs or the rest of the OS in general.

tar plus your choice of compression is almost always better than zip. Between tar.xz and tar.lrz it's very difficult to beat in terms of compression ratio, and tar.lz4 is difficult to beat in terms of compression/decompression speed.

Even plain tar is better than zip because it preserves file modes.

The only reason to use zip over tar is if you're either a windows user or are bending over for windows users. Every other OS can deal with them and for the file mode support alone it's superior.

Or is this just a reTARded pun?

>>543920

>MPV comes smaller, which means it's good!

It doesn't "mean it's good" but it's definitely a point in its favour.

>Pssh I'd never install codecs ever forever

I'm arguing the exact opposite. If something comes with builtin codecs, you need to wait for the maintainers to update the codecs in the software package, AND you have the problem of duplicated codecs on your system, AND any security flaw in the codecs will take much longer to get patched for that specific media player.

Do yourself a favour and use a media player which uses your system's codecs. Then not only will it have a great library of codecs, but the time between upstream and packaging will be much shorter (because there's one less link in the chain and it doesn't need to be hard-coded into the media player).

That and you won't experience the media player specific bugs that VLC was so often ridiculed for.

>it can use the internet and stuff! Look at how shiny it is too!

I didn't mention that at all. I talked about IPC sockets. That has absolutely nothing to do with internet connectivity, and if you don't know what it is you should probably get a basic grounding in computing before you make more of a fool of yourself.

>What's a playlist?

mpv does playlists.

>Why shouldn't you use a manual to learn literally fucking everything about the program?

muh user unfriendly xDDDDDDD

mpv "just works". Want to watch a youtube video? Launch mpv with that url. Want to pause a video? Click pause. Want to switch subtitles or audio? There's a button for that too. It's only the advanced features which require reading up on and 99% of the time nobody is going to care about those.

More importantly, a GUI doesn't make things easier. If you've ever seen VLC's advanced open dialog, you'll know that there's a lot in there which you can only understand by reading the manual. There's no way to abstract away from that which is inherently complex.

>>544101

I'm suspicious of this. Git has a metric fuck ton of features which make it usable, and I imagine any NIH workalike will be incomplete and clunky by comparison.
