https://blogs.microsoft.com/blog/2016/03/07/announcing-sql-server-on-linux/

>“This is an enormously important decision for Microsoft, allowing it to offer its well-known and trusted database to an expanded set of customers”, said Al Gillen, group vice president, enterprise infrastructure, at IDC. “By taking this key product to Linux Microsoft is proving its commitment to being a cross platform solution provider. This gives customers choice and reduces the concerns for lock-in. We would expect this will also accelerate the overall adoption of SQL Server.”

According to them:

>Groundbreaking security encryption capabilities that enable data to always be encrypted at rest, in motion and in-memory to deliver maximum security protection

>In-memory database support for every workload with performance increases up to 30-100x

>Incredible Data Warehousing performance with the #1, #2 and #3 TPC-H 10 Terabyte benchmarks for non-clustered performance, and the #1 SAP SD Two-Tier performance benchmark on windows

>Business Intelligence for every employee on every device – including new mobile BI support for iOS, Android and Windows Phone devices

>Advanced analytics using our new R support that enables customers to do real-time predictive analytics on both operational and analytic data

>Unique cloud capabilities that enable customers to deploy hybrid architectures that partition data workloads across on-premises and cloud based systems to save costs and increase agility

But it's all proprietary so nobody will give a shit. At the very best it's just trying to spread their product into a growing share of the market. At the very worst they could try to spread their botnet into the GNU/Linux world.

"Not being MySQL" is a good enough reason.

To be a bit more serious, SSMS is pretty fucking nice. However, since it's proprietary and expensive as fuck you should usually go with PostgreSQL instead.

 No.538563

Well, while it's proprietary, it may get people to switch from windows to GNU/Linux. Using it on GNU/Linux is better than using it on any Windows OS.

Less likely crazy theory:

Microsoft sees the writting on the walls for Windows (Server, at least) and is beginning to port its non-OS services to other easy-to-port-to operating systems as a plan B, in case they need to switch away from Windows and to SaaS and enterprise software.

More likely crazy theory:

Since Microsoft offers GNU/Linux instances on its cloud hosting service, it wants a way to be able to sell GNU/Linux admins a product that would normally be reserved for Windows Server admins, potentially bringing in more profit. Additionally, maybe they saw businesses that rely on MSSS on an intranet but don't use Windows for much else, and wanted a way to continue getting money from said people while letting them have their cake and eat it too.

Both of these are crazy, I know precisely what they're up to and I don't like it.

He's talking about the saying.

>Embrace

Meaning a plot to destroy their competitor by supporting it, adding to the capabilities, and finally eliminating them. Some on here also believe that is what Google is doing to Linux with Android and ChromeOS.

EEE doesn't apply here.

Neither try to compete with "normal" Linux, they have different niches and are not interchangeable. EEE implies luring customers from product A to product B and then breaking backwards compatibility with product A so people can't go back.

Same with systemd.

Anybody knows how to install Azure Linux Switch on Linux? I want to try it out.

Azure Cloud Switch is a Linux distro (used internally).

I wonder how far Microsoft is going to take this shitty "Microsoft <3 EEE" campaign. Just ports of their proprietary spyware to Linux, or will they go further? I doubt they'll go far enough to fork the kernel or produce their own publicly available distro, but aside from that limit I have no idea how far they're going to take this.

>>538765

>>538767

>they picked a distro for their base that supports other init systems.

Try telling them that. They seem to think that some software, like GNOME, having systemd dependencies means that running Debian without systemd isn't actually possible. Honestly, I'm not even sure what the Devuan devs are doing anymore. It doesn't take this long to swap Debian over to an alternate init. Rather than focusing on their initial goal they're starting up a bunch of extra bullshit which means we'll need to wait an eternity before we see the first stable release.

I'd rather install A Debian built and tested for sysV than try to configure Debian 8 to not use systemd.

Surely the convenience makes it useful.

When I want a desktop-for-family system I install linux-mint for a similar reason rather than Deb (even though its based on Deb).

What's Devuan like?

Besides, even if Microsoft's SQL server is better than the alternatives, you'd be a fucking retard if you trusted them.
