Hi, /tech/!

I have an itch. A technology fetish. I don't know how to call it.

I like seeing how useful stuff is made out of cheap, low end or obsolete stuff. Such as:

- powering a MAME arcade cabinet with a Raspberry PI

- building a desktop PC with dirt cheap socket 1366 Xeons bought from ebay

- creating a RAID array using a USB hub and some spare 8 GB USB sticks

- creating some powerful computing device by chaining, like, 10 Raspberyy PI compute modules together

- downgrading an old 3DS and have it so that it can play any 3DS game for free

- buying defective consoles from craigslist or ebay, fixing them with a minimal investment and resell it for profit

- repurposing old laptops by installing lightweight Linux distributions on them

You see the pattern. I get off to this gap in the initial value of a tech gadget and its spectacular increase in value once minimal effort and resources have been spent. Hell, I don't even need to build this shit myself, it's extremely satisfying to see other people on youtube doing this stuff.

So my questions for you:

- how is this called? does it have a name?

- any other people here with the same "tech fetish"?

- could you please provide youtube videos and tutorials detailing such projects?

Thanks!

Is your fetish activated by a gap like this?

>$40,000 computer

>bought for $200

>using it to develop your blogging software

Welcome, brother.

It's a simple modification on a rack power supply to make it more like a bench top one, with access to the voltage rails on the front instead of on the back.

Search also for PC ATX power supplies modified to serve as bench-top ones, cool stuff if you are an electronics hobbyist.

Also look for test equipment, like oscilloscopes that have features disabled from one model to the next in price only by software, people hack the firmware to access those more advance features using the cheapest ones.

Here we go OP. Druaga1 putting together a stupidly slow RAID setup out of an old tower and legacy PCI RAID controller. Completely useless, a hard drive on sale today can smash this thing.

I've seen a shitload of USB floppy drives set up as a RAID array. It's not for the functionality of it, but to see that it can be done.

My particular kink is the interconnectivity of everything. Like networking DOS, Mac, and other systems together to make use of the hardware on each. In the past, I had a 5.25" floppy drive shared on the network.

You might need to drop some more details on your setup there. On a side note, old rackmounts are great autism machines, loud as fuck, generate tons of heat, decently powerful, incredibly expandable, can be had for mere hundreds well-equipped.

I love how aware this guy is of all the problems evident in the shit he tries to do, yet does them anyway. Glad to see someone else with the "I don't need a very good reason to do this" mindset.

Local-only network for file recovery, though I have gotten Windows 3 on the web on a cable connection. Right now, it's hard finding a working NIC that doesn't fuck off and get ignored by my routers.
