Alright, guy who fails miserably a computers from he last thread. It 404'd before I saw a reply to my last post.
So after looking at a lot of what's out there, I have to acknowledge an external GPU would probably be more complicated than just building a gaming desktop, and while it seems a ton of options are on the horizon, I h ave no idea when that would be. So, back to asking for help with building one.
-You said compatibility was unlikely to be an issue, but I looked on newegg (I thought the site used to have a pc building guide or search engine or something. for beginners? All it's showing me is pre-built package.) and I see compatibility specifications all over the place.
-Can you link to a good site for beginners with step by step guides or at least a check list of every component I'd need?
-Can you recommend a good tower with a very large storage bay for holding numerous HDs? 4 at minimum, 8 preferred, but would also allow space for other things like a blu ray drive, etc?
-And if I just want to throw a bunch of additional USB ports in there, what would I need to search for?
-What even *is* a good graphics card? What's something that can handle the most recent stuff at max settings that won't be ridiculously expensive? Because remember, you said this was cheaper than getting an external GPU.

as for the case, you can filter out how many drive bays it has, 3.5 inch for regular hdds is what you probably want.

AMD and nvidia are releasing new vidya cards very soon, possibly next month. wait for that. you could even build the PC now and just use the integrated GPU to play some good old games and/or emulate games while waiting.
also, make sure you get a good intel CPU if you want to emulate PS2 or Wii (and soon Wii U, 3DS, xbox, and xbox 360) games. /tech/ will shill hard against intel because le hardware botnet meme but intel CPUs are far better for gaming, especially emulation (just like windows is far better for gaming than linux). you could also wait for AMD's new Zen CPUs which are supposed to be godly and finally BTFO intel, scheduled for release this winter.

Search for those keywords online. Beginner step by step pc building. Basic component list is MOBO, CPU, RAM, SSD\HD, GPU, PSU, case.
This is just an example, you don't need to buy it from this store, though I have bought them from before and have no complaints. But again, this is just to use as an example so you can play around with it.
http://pc.ncix.com/pcbuilder/index.php?action=config&id=4972521&platformid=1001
There's a compatibility checker though a competent tech should always double check it etc, and once you have researched and check it more, usually a staff from a competent store would assist with checking any compatibility issues.
>-Can you recommend a good tower with a very large storage bay for holding numerous HDs? 4 at minimum, 8 preferred, but would also allow space for other things like a blu ray drive, etc?
I got a full tower from Antec iirc, no complaints so far. But if you're the same dude from last thread, I have to ask you again if you really need those 8 or even 4 HDs especially if they're damaged. Can you just salvage their data, and use a SSD for the OS and main programs and a new HDD for storage. Again, I'm still not clear on why you want those 8-4 HDs if they're in the condition you've described before.
Same with the bluray player or bluray burner. If this is hooked up to a tv, or you're buying a new monitor those usually comes with HDMI nowadays, check though. Getting the bluray separately might be a better option for you. If you just want to watch bluray an external separate player might be better and cheaper. Non Smart bluray player can go on sale for 50-60$.
>-And if I just want to throw a bunch of additional USB ports in there, what would I need to search for?
What >>540032 said. Or a USB hub is another option, your choice and preference.
> -What even *is* a good graphics card? What's something that can handle the most recent stuff at max settings that won't be ridiculously expensive? Because remember, you said this was cheaper than getting an external GPU.
Getting a GPU for desktop to run the most current games at superultramax setting will still be expensive even if it is cheaper than a laptop external GPU setup. It's cheaper -than-, not cheap.
1080p is still very good, you can get a good 1080p monitor at an affordable price, and you can look for a decent and simple one GPU setup for 1080p at one step below ultra setting gaming that won't break the bank. And really ask yourself if that ultra setting is worth it, because from what I've seen at least most of the time it isn't. It's your hard earned money though dude.

When asking for a potential build with gaming in mind and which graphics card to get, it is helpful to know what resolution you plan to play your games at. If your monitor or HDTV you will be using is 1080p max, then there is no need to get the the top tier graphics cards and similarly if you plan on gaming in 4k resolution there is no point in getting most graphic cards that are good for 1080p etc.
As for your case, partpicker has sliders on the side of the page that lets you filter the number of HDD bays available, internal and external.
Good graphics card means different things to different people gaming at different resolutions on different monitors. 380x/970 levels are most likely where to start unless 4k is in your plans.

That being said, I highly recommend waiting a few months for 14nm GPUs to come out. If nothing else, they'll drive down the cost of current-gen GPUs by a shitload. I'd also recommend waiting until later this year for AMD to release Zen, so you don't have to use Intel's Judaic silicon.

Well lookit you mr moneybags, I once bought a keyboard on sale for 2$ from a pajeet computer store. It felt like typing with a collection of fossilized corn niblets, the plastic probably offgassed for a few weeks, but surprisingly it held up and still functional after 3 years. Finally donated it to goodwill because I'm a bit of a dick like that.

Don't; wait until Zen to make a CPU upgrade. If you for some reason can't, don't get a 9590; it's just a 8370 with included watercooling, which you obviously don't need if you're getting aftermarket. That being said, the 8370 is just a high-binned 8350, which is in turn a normal-binned 8320 (as the other poster said).
I don't have too much watercooling experience myself, but I've heard nothing but good things about NZXT's Kraken coolers, plus I've had great success with their products before.

>I dont really know what I am doing but I presume basically any ram will work right(just going to buy the cheapest possible)?
In your case, any DDR3 RAM will work, and yes, always buy the cheapest that is compatible with your CPU/mobo.
>Will I need more than 8gig for gaming on this type of rig?
I typically recommend 16 GB of RAM, but 8 GB is perfectly fine if you're on a budget. Just be aware that you might need to close RAM-demanding applications (web browsers, photo/video editors) while playing RAM-demanding games. Assuming you have a free slot, you can always add in another stick later anyway.
>Does hybrid HDD do anything?
These days you're better off simply purchasing an SSD and HDD(s) separately. They used to provide a great value when SSDs were more expensive, but not so much today. Do buy one if you find it at a good price though. Yeah looking at your selection Ausland definitely get that drive in the pic.
>general problems you can see?
Seagate doesn't have the best reputation, but given your options I'd say it's about your best bet.
There are cheaper R9 380's available from better brands (ASUS Strix 4GB).
Consider spending an extra $20 on the Corsair 300R. The 200R isn't a bad case, but the 300R is a bit better.
The PSU is quite overkill. Your build will never be consuming more than 400W of power, so an 850W supply is a bit excessive. You can spend $100 and get one that will perform identically and as reliably as the one in your pic.

You keep saying you want something the same price as the HD 6970, but what do you mean by this? The original MSRP? The price you can currently buy it new? The going price on eBay? I assumed a low-ball number, and the R9 380 would fit right in that niche.

Regarding motherboards themselves, look for whatever features you need or prefer to be integrated in one package. Get the cheapest one that has both a good reputation and fits your needs (x PCIe slots, networking, etc).

I'd go with an APU instead of CPU with dedicated GPU, say the A8-7650K. Similar single-threaded performance, same number of cores, and roughly an R7 250 integrated, and for $45 cheaper than the two separately.
This does somewhat necessitate slightly more expensive RAM, but that's still money saved. Also you had pricier RAM to begin with for some reason.
Seagate drives are unreliable and a bad value to boot. For less than $8 you can double your capacity and have a more reliable drive.
You can get a modular version of that PSU for $10 cheaper.
That white NZXT case, while good, is hardly subtle. I'd consider something a bit more subtle, but that's just me.

>As in, absolutely nothing. It's not too helpful to call the choice retarded and not explain.
I linked a resource outlining some of the basics of building a gaming rig, though I suppose I should have gone into more detail:
You chose an APU for your processor. The purpose of an APU is to combine both the CPU and GPU into a single package. This comes at the cost of having a relatively weak CPU and GPU. As a result, it doesn't make sense to have both an APU and a GPU in the same system; just have a normal CPU with the GPU.
>Putting this together myself, I don't want to risk. I don't mind paying more if it means I know it's put together right.
You're paying roughly three to four times more than you would pay if you were to put it together yourself. Also, assembling one is insanely easy. If you can solve pic related, you can build a computer.

What are your opinions of the Ockel Sirius B?
For anyone who doesn't know (which included me until minutes ago), this product is the central processor of a computer which is built into a phone-sized aluminum case. It connects to any HD monitor, keyboard, and mouse through either USB connections or Bluetooth. It comes loaded with Windows 10, but there is an option to buy one with no OS preloaded. The major difference between this and other small electronics is that the Sirius B is impressive with computing power with an Intel CPU, 2 GB of RAM, and 32 GB of internal memory. That is a lot of power for as little as 169 US dollars plus shipping.
The upgraded Black Cherry version, available perhaps as soon as May of this year, is a beast. It has an upgraded Intel processor, 4 GB of RAM, 64 GB of internal memory, and a USB 3.0 port. Even more than that, it uses unique heat sink design to eliminate an internal fan. I imagine that the removal of a mechanical fan will help immensely in battery life. A completely decked out Black with the Windows 10 OS and a Micro SD slot still only costs $374 plus shipping.
First question: Has anyone tried loading linux onto one of these machines yet?
Second question: Has anyone made a review which mentions battery consumption?

Okay thanks, I kind of figured it wouldn't be worth much, but at least it seems like it'll be a comfortable way to play older VNs while it lasts.
It seems like Thinkpads are really well loved. Do you think a Thinkpad is the way to go for a basic, low price, laptop for someone like me who mainly uses his PC for web browsing, playing VNs, and watching anime?
I have a Acer right now and it doesn't seem like the thing has much life left in it. Best mouse right now is the G502. Extremely comfortable and significantly better longevity than both Razer and Zowie (both of which typically start double-clicking inside of a year, I've burned through so many fucking Deathadders and two FK1s).
It also saves all software settings on-board, so you don't need to run anything in the background. This lets you bind your additional mouse buttons to say, numpad keys, which allows you to use those buttons in every single game which is a god-tier feature if you play pre-2008 games which almost exclusively lack the functionality to bind those extra buttons. No more fucking around with autohotkey to get that shit working.

If you do want a mech, you'll probably end up getting something with cherry switches.
Reds are 100% marketing gimmick and useless for gaming and just downright awful for typing. Blacks are heavier Reds and just as shit.
Browns are excellent for gaming and good for typing. Clears are heavier Browns, so if you're a hammer-typist consider getting those instead; but if you have a light touch they will fatigue you during extended use.
Blues are okay for gaming and excellent for typing. Greens are heavier Blues, so the same idea from Browns to Clears applies here. Greens feel most similar to the IBM Model M. Do note that both Blues and Greens are very clicky. You get used to it while typing, but it can be a distraction while gaming, especially if you're doing something particularly quiet or tense and don't use headphones.
I would strongly recommend picking up a switch sampler before you pull the trigger on a mech. Do note that Amazon has an extremely generous return policy as long as it is shipped and sold by them, it's basically a 30 day money back guarantee, so feel free to take advantage of that :^)

I'm in a delicate position.
My desktop, which was a hand-me-down, just died. I am below poorfag tier, being an unemployed cripple, but everything I do (did?) was through that machine. So I need to be able to fix it on what would be considered pennies. I can't go shopping for a new computer. I need to replace, ideally, a single component.
I've already ruled out the RAM, HDs, and video card, which leaves me with the CPU, Motherboard, or Power Supply. Based on the machine's behavior when crashing every couple of seconds (but only while loading something), the fact that the power supply is the most recent component in it, and the fact that something smells 'hot' near the mobo even when the computer is powered down, I'm inclined to think it's one of the former 2. And I am incapable of testing either individually.
This leaves me in a pinch. I need to be able to replace what's broken while remaining 100% compatible with everything else in the machine.
Current relevant components-

GPU- http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814143167
CPU- I don't even know. It was buried under a custom cooler fan. It was 4 core, but wasn't an i-anything. But if I'm replacing the motherboard anyways, I probably should replace this too, rendering the question moot.
