It's a really interesting idea, but it's fell short every time I've tested it. The devs are making decent progress though, so I'm hopeful that it will be good enough to use as a daily driver in a few years.

Hobby project. Fun. Useful? Nope.

I didn't look into it too much. It's been in development for a very long time and is really lagging behind what it seeks to imitate. However I do see it great for video games one day.
This is with the mindset that gaming on Linux isn't going to be a smooth transition if it even happens at all. Just a lot of games do not have long term support and will simply not be ported to Linux.

ReactOS uses wine to implement most of it's advanced Windows features. Anything you can do on ReactOS you can do on Linux with wine, and Linux does it better, because Linux has some hardware support while ReactOS has nearly none.

source? I thought it gained compatibility because it copied the design of windows.

It doesn't use wine but the wine project and reactos do share packages and help eachother out

They share a lot of code, e.g. d9d implementation

The job ReactOS was supposed to be good at is running low-level Windows stuff, namely drivers, but ReactOS became bootable on real hardware only recently because they spend time re-implementing notepad.exe and explorer.exe. It's a vaporware.
No.543338
Wouldn't it be hilarious if on the day ReactOS releases they're best effort, Microsoft releases the Windows 95 or 98 source code?
I can imagine being a ReactOS developer and killing my family.

Couldn't dd it to a usb like other distros so I left it alone. Why is it that some distros will not boot from usb?

I've been using Void for close to a year and it is feeling stale? How do you /tech/ies overcome this? Do you switch distros? LXDE is pretty appealing to me at the moment even though I'm using Cublinux at the moment (live).

Oh you've got to be kidding me. Is that actually necessary for anything? I imagine people just install some other text editor regardless.

It wouldn't mean shit because Windows 95/98 both use the Windows 9x DOS based kernel while ReactOS is targeting compatibility with the modern Windows NT kernel
The only Windows NT programs that work in Windows 9x are programs that use only rudimentary Win32 api calls, likewise, no Win16 APIs exist in modern Windows and modern Windows will not run 16-bit 9x programs
Figured I'd tell you since you probably weren't even alive yet when Windows 95/98 came out underage dumbass

Does it work if my USB has two partitions?
The only thing that works for USB with two partitions are windows tool like Universal USB Installer and YUMI... I want something like that on Loonix so bad;
THE BIGGER PROBLEM at the moment is I can't even burn this ReactOS Live CD onto a full single partition FAT32 drive..

I just tried to use it to run some PLC programming software. I used the qemu image. It had a few graphical glitches at the desktop, but I got the software installed.
It then bitched about mfc42u.dll, which I copied into system32. The app then started but froze at the splash screen.
I then tried the app in wine (I custom compiled the latest release), and it had the exact same behavior (froze at splash screen).
So no good for me, but pretty amazing. If people would pile into developing for it, it could be incredible. It has got to be pretty close to being self-hosting.

You know that's funny. I was dinking around the reactos desktop. Installed some stuff. Saw a readme.txt and double clicked on it.
and notepad.exe fucking opened it.
That's exactly the behavior I would expect. All my interactions were very windows 2000 like.
I am not a reactos or windows developer, but I suspect they had to implement notepad in order to make the user experience work.
