Anybody seen this?

https://pyra-handheld.com/boards/pages/pyra/

>The Pyra will be a perfect pocket device for everyday computing, gaming, emulation or hacking.

>It is a unique combination of a gaming handheld and a mini-laptop (approximately the size of the Nintendo DS), running plain Debian Linux as OS.

>It is the successor of the OpenPandora, which was available from DragonBox Shop or ithic.com in USA (more distributors planned) from stock. The development of the Pyra is almost finished - thanks to a lot of feedback and help from community members, we created a product that features almost everything you can imagine.

>Unlike most commercial devices out there, all steps in development and production were and will be posted in the blog and you can even ask questions directly to us developers!

Usually overpriced, if they gave the opportunity to put something like Arch or Gentoo on it then I'd probably have a go. You don't want Debian on it, 1. it gets upgraded every three or so years, I can imagine dist-upgrading being a ballache.

Be much better to have a rolling release on there.

 No.542965

The open Pandora was good not great but good. It was a bit slow and alot of the emulators had a shitty ui but the Pyra has a better SoC and it's upgradable.

>>542958

There is a Gentoo port on the Pandora and both the Pandora and Pyra will boot off an sd card so I'm not sure why you wouldn't be able to install whatever you want.

 No.542966

>>542958

The bootloader is free, you can run any distro built for ARM.

>PowerVRâ„¢ SGX544-MP2

So which one is the GPU, in the traditional sense?

 No.542990

Does it have wacom?

If it had a pen for doodling I would throw out my computer.

 No.542999

>>542951

I wonder it would be possible to develop things on that thing. Also, does anyone know how much will it cost?

 No.543002

>>542999

You can run any GNU/Linux text editor, or compiler.

 No.543010

>>542990

I wish it had a wacom. I think it's going to have a shitty resistive touch screen like the Pandora.

>>542999

Probably 500-600USD

 No.543038

>>542951

I'd love to AGDG on that, maybe make a game free enough rms would consider playing it.

will you notice me now, senpai?

SSSHHHHHIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEETTT

 No.543066

The cheapest model of the Pandora is fucking $140!!!

Yikes!

 No.543074

I like the idea of it but it's expensive. If computers like it ended up becoming popular, like the RasPi was to SBCs, the price would plummet and you'd have some competition. I don't see that happening in the near future though.

Are all the drivers working for it? Are the devs or community going to support it for years after release, making sure everything works? How about the battery life? If the keyboard wears down or the sticks break do they sell replacements? I've already been burned by the Banana Pi M2, I'm not letting that happen again.

 No.543076

>>543074

It's not released yet

they got working prototypes and are preparing for mass-production sometime later this year. Apparently they're still working on some of the drivers, but most things already work to some degree.

Here's a video of a slapped together prototype uploaded 2 days ago: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d4t9Ys8wI6k

500$ for something that doesn't have a market?

If I wanted to emulate snes games I can get rooted psp for 50$. If I want a small laptop I can get something like x220 for 300$.

So when would this be a better option?

Nevertheless, I still think it's pretty cool, though not cool enough of a toy to drop 500-600$

 No.543091

>>543081

It's something that could be used for pentesting in public without looking like a weirdo nerd, it's still really expensive for what it is.

 No.543156

>>543081

It's 500$ precisely because it has no market.

Economies of scale surely are harsh and unfair.

 No.543159

it's almost as cute as me :3

 No.543226

>It was a bit slow and alot of the emulators had a shitty ui

they should really do an arm port of the GX emulators on the wii: great UI, very fast, and libre. they're going to just rot if they're left on the wii. and they're actually good instead of the shit tier programmer interfaces that plague the pandora/pyra.

Gonna be overpriced as fuck but makes my pinus hard.

>>542958

>gentoo on that thing

Definition of insanity. How many days compiling the kernel will take on that?

>>543081

>doesn't have a market?

the market is using full linux system instead of a shitty phone while among normies and on the move. pretty small market that consists of neckbears.

 No.543297

I use Qutebrowser and mpv + youtube-dl for video and audio on my desktop and netbook. Compared to Palemoon, which I was using before, I haven't noticed much of a speed increase on my desktop, but Palemoon has lots of features that I never use, so Qutebrowser is objectively less bloated. I've only used Qutebrowser on my netbook, but most websites are slow as fuck with JavaScript enabled. It's all that fucking jQuery, I'm sure. The integrated ad-blocker in Qutebrowser does help a lot as well.

dl;dr: Web-devs are the biggest bottleneck to web-browsing; not the web-browsers themselves.

 No.543305

Yeah, yeah. I've got at least three non-mainstream rendering engines on mine because fuck Webkit and I use google-chrome-bin for normal browsing

 No.543313

I want to say that I mostly use my netbook to SSH into my desktop for coding and compiling, but I probably use it more for shitposting and watching videos.

>google-chrome-bin for normal browsing

Get on my level

- surf webkit2 branch - for links from the chat

- dwb - was main browser, but now it crashes constantly, too lazy to delete

- palemoon - configured with tor proxy, should replace with something but too lazy again

- chromium - for js/html5 heavy browsing

- lynx - got installed as a dependency with something

- w3m - for gopher://

I should install more browsers and become browser god

 No.543350

Y'know, we should just buy our own parts, and use either make our own (with the power of STRONK DORFEN BLACKSMITHIN') or scavenge (with the power of ROBUST CITY COON) shells for something like this and put in our own parts.

It'd be cheaper and more customizable (which apparently isn't a word).

 No.543388

Two of the SoCs were from 2008 so It's not the entirely the emulators fault. I think that ports of emulators are an issue though since most of what gets ported is android stuff that has a worse UI then the emulators made for the Pandora.

 No.543391

https://www.pyra-handheld.com/specs.php

It's slightly below a Galaxy S4 specs wise (lower resolution, half the A15 cores, same amount of RAM.etc)

Dissapointing tbh, I would've gone with a Cortex A53/A57 little.big configuration so we have at least 64-bit support, otherwise these devices are useless in 20 years

 No.543394

>>543391

One of the more unexpected issues they were having was getting anyone to even sell parts to them or would sell to them without special conditions like Nividia wanted. The Pyra has a daughterboard with the SoC and ram on it so that It could be swapped later if they find something better.

 No.543403

>>543394

I don't see why they couldn't have commissioned some chink fab company to make ARMv8 design SoCs for them, but what do I know?

 No.543410

Evil Dragon and everyone working with him wanted to keep as much of the prodution in Europe as possible.I think the PCB is made in Germany while the case is made in Greece. I think there are a few parts they buy that are made in china though.

 No.543418

>>543081

$300? You can get an X220 off ebay with no drive or ram for $150, 120gb ssd for $30, 8gb ram for $30, and you're good.

 No.543428

>>543388

you misunderstand me friend. the wii emulators would be useless because they're just old pc ones with ppc dynarecs.

the good bit is the interface library and menus which are ballin, would work well with their touch and joystick controls, and are free software.

but lets face it: this thing is gonna be trash till it gets a lakka port: and once that happens their debian system will be wasted effort.
