Trying to pimp out an old Athlon 64 system. I know it takes DDR2 ram and I got a gentoo HDD for it. Do you think I should get like a 550 for it to use instead of the shitty onboard graphics?

 No.543118

Give it an SSD since HDD I/O speed is probably shit as it is on that thing

not a bad idea

This should be your highest priority, it'll make swap much faster as well as normal storage stuff

Give it a 64/128GB SSD as others have suggested and don't invest a cent more on the system.

That SSD will keep on being useful while the rest of the system is on its way out and no other upgrade will justify the price anyway.

Install a very lightweight Linux distro (the most heavyweight you're looking at being Lubuntu or a lighter distro with XFCE) and that system will keep on being useful for a few years.

At least until the battery dies. Then you're left with a shrinking market of $100 proprietary batteries or cheap Chinese knockoffs that die in months.

A Slackware HDD.

Throw it away and get a real system, there's nothing that shitty piece of trash is going to be good for.

This can't power a laptop anon.

 No.543420

8gb of ram, ssd. Dont put any more into it. You can probably get the ram super cheap or free off craigslist or ebay.

Trinity would also be a good DE for that system. For an example of how light it is, Q4OS uses it by default and has minimum specs at 128 MB RAM. Agree with the others on an SSD.

You show me a laptop that has an Athlon 64, DDR2 and a slot for a PCIe Geforce 550.

 No.543432

Check the motherboard's maximum RAM

I have a fuckton of DDR2 laying around

My OptiPlex GX620 only holds 4GB (though it's a 64-bit rig) and I've gutted a bunch of old computers that used DDR2.
