So, when is the new unified open source AMD stack getting released? I don't mean their special stuff like TressFX, I mean the base GPU drivers. I read somewhere a while back that they were going to move to a model where the closed source stuff in Catalyst is all just a plugin. And how's it going to play with Linux?

 No.545356

I think they had their catalyst team join the amdgpu team to speed things up or something.

Nothing is going to change, 1% of users making 0% revenue.

Actaully, that would be the fglrx team that was moved, as they will no longer develop it.

I believe the 4.5 kernel is going to have support.

Intel, and to a lesser extent NVidia, have competent open source display drivers, AMD doesn't and fglrx is fucked.

GTX 750 user here. I can't even fucking run Tux Racer with the current drivers. Nvidia drivers are fucking bullshit.

my 760 could run tf2 on medium and low settings on the OS drivers. The 900 series apparently has no problems running games on high.

proprietary are really really good though

I'm using proprietary. It sucks balls. I can't even run KDE in OpenGL mode. I'm 100% done with Nvidia cards.

 No.545564

So when should I upgrade ?

should i just go get an R9 380 now and an SSD or wait till all this fancy new shit comes out and do pretty much a full rebuild?

I really want to drop windows for good and the future looks brighter every day.

if trump gets elected hopefully he will make linux great again.

>I can't even run KDE in OpenGL mode

Link to a bug report or it didn't happen. Seriously, I always could play games on the proprietary driver, something so basic like KDE in OpenGL mode should work for everybody.

I also have a separate machine with 8400GS under nouveau. Old games run at unplayable framerate but desktop effects work perfectly. Also the nouveau driver might be outdated there.

Intel yes, Nvidia no. Nouveau is hot fucking dogshit, running at about 20% the performance of proprietary. Radeonsi, on the other hand, runs at 90% of proprietary.

Nvidia is openly hostile to FOSS, where AMD releases white papers and has full time FOSS developers.

This was the whole reason I threw away my old GTX 550 Ti and got an R7 370, and I regret nothing. Fuck Nvidia for openly shitting on their own users.

Naw, AMDs piece of shit drivers for Linux are one of the main reasons I went back to Windows on my AMD machine

Been trying to get away from intel and nvidia. I just hope Zen doesnt end up completely sucking.

 No.545997

>proprietary are really really good though

I have a 960 and I get occasional kernel panics on arch with the proprietary drivers (about once a week or once every other week).

This did not happen when I was using my old amd video card with open source drivers, so I assume it is nvidia's doing.
