CRT thread. Discuss CRTs.

I have a specific question, but I don't want that to distract from the topic in general, so I'll ask it in the next post. Also mods feel free to delete that post if you think it belongs in the consumer advice thread and I'll repost it later.

 No.545563

I miss contrast. Everything today is washed out with no blacks to ensure viewability on HDTVs and IPS LCDs. I also miss doing demos back during the CRT era and timing the horizontal retrace (yes, horizontal) to switch palette colors while the beam wasn't hitting the phosphors.

I want a CRT monitor or TV to play Splatoon. I know that higher-end CRTs are highly sought after and very expensive, but all I need is:

720p 16:9 (splatoon doesn't go above this)

60hz (wii u doesn't support above this, and actually I'd prefer something meant for 60hz to a monitor meant for higher refresh rates with phosphor persistence low enough that 60hz flicker will cause headaches)

Either HDMI input (wii u has no VGA support) or component input capable of 720p.

Other than that, I'm cool with small-to-medium size, shadow mask instead of aperture grille, and other other things that would be turnoffs for desktop productivity use, so long as the image quality isn't complete shit, I get that CRT response time, and it doesn't cost hundreds of dollars. Is there a monitor for me, or do I have no choice but to invest in the high end?

tfw I bought a gayman LCD and didn't realize until after the fact that it didn't support strobed backlight @60hz

tfw I barely even play PC games anymore

At least I can comfortably fit a text editor, terminal, and web browser on it.

also I should add that I'm not necessarily looking for someone to point me to a specific model (although that would be appreciated), because I know that buying CRTs for non-ridiculous prices is all about trolling craigslist and patience. Rather, I'm genuinely unsure if there are any CRTs that fit those requirements and are less sought after because of it, or if there are no options but VGA 4:3 monitors, 480i shit TVs, and the ultra high end 16:9 and 16:10 monitors.

tfw cant find a good CRT near me

 No.545680

So what was the last year they made decent monitor tubes?

 No.545797

>>545680

CRT production fell off around the turn of the century. Buying CRTs from 2001-2002 isn't necessarily hard, but after that you won't find many still in circulation.

Most tubes you find on auction sites are from the mid-late 90's. Some even 80's.

>Discuss CRTs.

They weigh a ton, take up a shitload of room, are sensitive to magnets, models with HDMI ports are very rare.

CRTs are for poorfags that need to dumpster fish, sperglords that want to feel cyberpunk, and FPS/fightan gaem fags that think a 4ms delay is all that stands between them being a pubfag or triple diamond pro.

Thou art a legend, sir.

According to the vidya set, if you value display quality above all else, a Sony PVM (professional video monitor) is perfection for RGB input. If you're looking for a big CRT, you might be able to find good sets mixed in with the crap sets at thrift stores like Goodwill and Salvation Army Thrift. It's not rare to see Trinitron sets mixed with no-name crap.

For CRT VGA monitors, I'm not really sure. I've only ever used about a dozen, though one that had come with an old Sony Vaio system was pretty damn nice.

So you're saying people don't actually like CRTs?

That's quite the accusation there.

 No.545843

You're right, what am I saying, clearly a display that causes massive eye strain is the right choice.

Different anon, as soon as LED lit 1920x1080 E-IPS, IPS, VA panels, and whatever the fuck Samsung calls their version of it, came down to about 130-200$ I dumped my last remaining CRT.

Yeah CRT has great viewing angles, but LCD technology has mostly caught up or at least reached good enough. Even plasma is basically dead.

But muh color and picture quality though. Fucking fuck, CRT phosphor dims and dies out faster, and the days of when most monitors are CCFL lit shitass TN panel are gone, and fuck CCFL in the ass too.

I hung on to my 19 inch CRT for a damn long time, because it still kicked a lot of early TN panels ass in the color fidelity, until it started going cuckookakka. Thank christ the LCD technology caught up and became affordable, because the second it did I put that CRT on the curb with no regret.

 No.545859

>LCD technology caught up

You're a retard. Even the best IPS still has a weak contrast and a fucking glow.

Only OLED can compete, and it's not ready.

>tfw won a 16" VGA CRT off eBay for $5 last week

Best feel. Getting myself a new CRT with RCA inputs is sure to cost a pretty penny, however.

 No.545891

>>545859

The actual line that you mangled is this, you dyslexic mongoloid:

>LCD technology has mostly caught up or at least reached good enough.

There's a reason why CRT, and even plasma is considered dead tech. Their few remaining benefits even with the rose tinted glasses on, is no longer that huge of an advantage.

If IPS triggers you for not having the contrast you want, try out VA based panel.

>Only OLED can compete, and it's not ready.

OLED -at monitor and TV size- might not be ready ever, but who gives a shit at this point if they can not increase their lifespan and lower the price point.

But keerist on two sticks, CRT are not like old school vintage speakers or fine wine. For that one old stock CRT that fullfills all your fantasy, the rest are as fragrant as 3 week old smegma.

 No.545937

I keep my trinitron around for games or old 4:3 media every now and then. it has a fair bit of hours on it so the color is pretty meh, but damn is it nice to use for other things.

they're not worth using as a daily driver these days, unless you have something with low hours.

 No.545947

>>545891

>There's a reason why CRT, and even plasma is considered dead tech

By who? Plebs who can't tell the differences between a shitty TN and a good IPS?

LCD was pushed because normalfags don't care about quality; only price.

> but who gives a shit at this point if they can not increase their lifespan and lower the price point

Why would you be on /tech/ and not care about this? I don't want my new screen dying after five years.

>For that one old stock CRT that fullfills all your fantasy, the rest are as fragrant as 3 week old smegma.

No shit. CRT isn't good as a whole, but the latest Trinitron and Diamondtron were miles ahead of current LCDs.

I would buy a FW900 with a displayport entry if they were made again. But buying a CRT today is retarded because these are too old.

 No.545962

>>545947

Not him, but you're either underage or blinded by nostalgiagoggles if you can't recognize that the reason LCDs took over was because they are cheaper to manufacture, lighter, aren't affected by magnets, take up less space, and use less power, than CRT. Yeah, contrast ratio on LCD is sub-par, but going backwards to massive heavy power vampires Ian the answer

Believe me, I love my CRT, its a Commodore 1702 Video Monitor, and I think everyone should own a small CRT just to see what good contrast ratios and high refresh rates look like, but CRTs lost to LCDs on the light, big screen HD department, and CRTs will never rise again, they are too impractical and have way too many problems and the only reason we ever really used them for so long was because there was no better alternatives

 No.545980

>>545864

do you live in a third world country where CRTs are still valuable or are subhuman foreigners just bidding up all the CRTs on ebay? in the USA CRTs are so worthless there's no point in even selling them, you can see them on the side of the road next to garbage cans all the time.

flea markets and garage sales are full of CRTs of all sizes for $2 or less. I've bought several large and small high quality CRTs with RCA input that work perfectly for $1. I even got a huge 64" one for $5 that weighs more than ur mum and required 3 men to carry into my living room.

 No.545983

>>545947

>LCD was pushed because normalfags don't care about quality; only price.

Guess what though, the large numbers of normalfags and what pricepoint they're willing to pay for a "good 'nuff" is not an insignificant factor for companies.

If I had 5 minutes to try to convince one of the display manufacturer to at least keep a line of 21&32 inch plasma monitors\displays , I fucking would because I love plasma when I was using plasma on company time and dime.

But I would not be able to satisfactorily answer that CEO's counter question of how many people would buy that line outside of smaller numbers of pros, prosumer or enthusiasts. And I would not be able to guarantee potential customers would purchase them at the makers and retailers price point. Especially when the current LCD technology while not a 100% 1 to 1 replacement, is close enough for most people and at a lower price due to volume, easier manufacturing etc.

>Why would you be on /tech/ and not care about this? I don't want my new screen dying after five years.

Really nigger? Read what I wrote, I FUCKING WANT THEM TO INCREASE THEIR LIFESPAN.

Otherwise, as exactly what you wrote yourself. There will not be many people interested in buying them because at their current high tier price. Most people unless they're some oily saud cuntfuck who has a 2 different sports car for every day of the week, do not want it to be a semi disposable item when they're paying that amount. If there aren't that many buying interest among the masses, it doesn't improve the chances for further development and improvement for larger OLED screens.

>If IPS triggers you for not having the contrast you want, try out VA based panel.

Which have Black crush.

Also LCD has poor motion representation compared to CRT, but that can be fixed with flashing backlights.

 No.546022

>>545983

Plasma wasn't great for monitors, still lacked contrast relative to CRT and had far worse motion fidelity at higher framerates because of it's sequential bitplane display tech (rather than stroboscopic like CRTs). Though the latter doesn't really matter for 24/25/30 fps content, because the motion is so badly represented to begin with.

I've used top-tier CRT monitors from 1995-2004'ish, everyone I know jumped at the chance to get back desk space with LCD panels. modern, good quality displays shit all over CRTs in every possible way.

My uncle still has an FW900, it's absolutely glorious. 2560x1600 24" CRT.

most stores at least try to sell them for a few weeks. I never see any good ones anymore, they're either low end trash consumer grade tubes, or the surface of the tube is browner than my cat's anus.

the majority of good used ones that you could find in shops like that have been gone for years now, went the way of our basements or a recycling plant.
