Ok serious question here

Is there any reason at all to own a mac these days besides iOS development?

I honestly can't think of any, even devs I know who are saddled with a macbook because their employers do both android and iOS apps tell me the latest OSX its even worse than Win10 which is a first, and some macfags have been saying the same, also about ios vs android

Also it seems apple genuinely doesn't gives a fuck anymore about keeping up with the competition since they already realized their real market are brand-obsessed posers

Again this is a serious question, if there are any macfags here then explain why you can't change it for a PC

OS X sucks, for hardware support.

OS X sucks, for file management as it actively tries to fuck with the data and case insensitivity, problem residing in the OS and the file format that OS X provides

You could argue that OS X sucks for videogames, but then again other OS that aren't windows sucks for videogames not because they suck at videogames but suck because of not being supported by developers at all, although that might change later on.

OS X lacks the special proprietary software that actually has worth mentioning. Some of the software OS X uses are ported software from Linux/UNIX/whatever or Windows

It just SUCKS, both hardware and the operating software it provides.

I can see why some retard want to use windows because videogames, I can see why someone want to use Linux because it's free and it just werks.

But OS X, I don't see the point much like you do, other than branding.

It's a cult. I do residential computer repair for a living and every time some Macfag walks through the door because their applecare ran out I can't help but roll my eyes. They instantly get charge an extra hour of labor just for having a Mac because their hardware is an unnecessary pain in the ass to work on, and OSX is an insufferable piece of shit the seamlessly combines all of the inconvenient elements of Windows and Linux.

The hardware, Apple is more of a hardware company than software, Apple can't make a decent OS worth jack shit but the hardware itself is fairly solid at least when it comes to Macbooks

You could probably do better with the same budget but if you have a disposable income and don't want to spend time thinking out it, there are worse things to waste your money on, especially since you could just install Windows or Linux and have a better OS running on it than OSX

Mac hardware is unreliable, and makes even an Acer laptop from Wal-Mart look stable.

It's designed to be hard to repair, and to be thrown away when the warranty runs out. They also have bizzare hardware issues, for example someone I know has a MacBook Pro that all of a sudden booted with the fans whirring at full blast and a keyboard/mouse that don't work. Another Mac owner I know had issues even running games like Quake 3 on it.

The hardware hasn't even been different from PCs since 2006, when they went from PowerPC to Intel to slash costs.

The OS is slow, bloated, and is a complete clusterfuck. I tried to run ifconfig on a Mac owner's laptop and they had no idea where the Terminal was located at.

People only buy Macs for the same reason they buy Beats. They want the hip 20something image and don't know jack shit about computers.

I get it. You need to justify your string and cardboard OS

>Is there any reason at all to own a mac these days besides iOS development?

As many people here point out, the OS is idiot proof. But how much idiot proof it actually is?

Well, I told my dad to buy one and I haven't have to do any tech support to it in over a year, and it's still running Yosemite.

By using the shell and a package manager you can do in OSX 99% of the things you can do on any Linux/BSD distro. While I would like to rice it -- and it's possible to install another DE/WM and running Quartz -- I just deal with it. Also battery life is great: ~12h advertised; ~10h real IME.

So you have a super low maintenance system that can do most things linux can. Plus the hardware + servicing. Personally I don't find cleaning my gear (laptop/pc/keyboard) exciting at all anymore. Have done shitloads of both Windows/Linux installations, again, boring. Nowadays most decent project will offer binaries for popular platforms (win/lin/osx), and source code, so you can either direct download or build it yourself.

You get the advantages of a real Unix like without the hastle of Linux and setting up drivers. Also most proprietary software works with it.

I don't think the price justifies getting a Mac, but it fills a spot no other lone OS does.

Though I will admit it >>547770 is correct, apple internals are arranged so that any repair job that is not a battery or hard drive issue is nothing but a headache.

It's useful for the weird niche that needs both MS Office and Valgrind.

> Apple software sucks

> Apple hardware sucks

> No, I'm not going to give details, take my word for it

I have an iMac, it's an expensive desktop computer with notebook components that's barely repairable. But you know what? It gets shit done on the first try. My parents are using my old MacBook from 2007 and it still works (it had a complete breakdown once, but that was still during the warranty period). With that said, my iMac is from 2009, so maybe things have changed since then, I don't know. The OS is a Unix system that lets me do any of the Unix wizardry, plus I have a very nice GUI interface that beats Windows by miles.

What I would like to see would be some sort of Mac Medium, with a real tower you can upgrade and stuff, but that will never happen. Building a hackintosh is more and more alluring every day.

would love to have some cheap second-hand apple laptop from somewhere and dual-boot it with Ubuntu, once they upgrade to the whole Unity8+Snappy(and some secondary DE like KDE).

Mostly for curiosity and whenever i may need to do some UNIX stuff.

Adobe Photoshit is not "most" proprietary software

Adobe has most of the proprietary software people care about. Hipsters need their adobe premiere and photoshop, which you can't seem to get on any other Unix like.

The only use I have for Apple products is to use them to recover or convert old data, so that it can be moved online for public access. Same reason I restore old computers in my neverending quest to get a system with a fucking working 5.25" floppy drive. Every system I have with a floppy connector just ignores them, either due to corrupt BIOS issues, or some other bullshit reason.

Like that is a really high bar in the first place.

A older mac pro sounds exactly what you want.

 No.548297

for a fa/g/got? not really.

macs are good for people who want to use a computer without having to know anything about computers

they also used to have some of the best proprietary software for for film, design and vfx

their ui design is largely unmatched

most of the redeemable qualities died once apple became a fashion brand, now macs are just a thing you plug your phone into.

The problem is with the "older" part, I want a computer that is current. Unless you mean taking the tower of a Mac Pro and putting modern parts inside it, but that just gives me the looks.
