I live in Nepal and I am paying for 2 Mbps fiber connection, which roughly amounts to $20/month with 80 GB datacap without any sharing ratio.

But they allow me to use google, apple, washingtonpost, new york times, hulu and microsoft sites plus their own FTP sites for up to 10MBPS with no extra charge. Even when I use all data I can still access those sites in full speed.

So what's the catch? Are they being generous or they are datamining me? If so, what are they collecting about me? lol I don't even use facbook.

 No.547894

If it's not the only ISP in Nepal, then they're basically trying to lure users from competing ISPs by free stuff. Capitalism, ho!

Net reutrality is dead in your country, m8. They're being paid by those companies to allow it.

>80 GB datacap

>generous

I'd say you are too humble, because I'm glad I don't have to put up with this shit.

>80 GB datacap

WOW! Must be like using uucp over satellite in 1995.

I really feel sorry for you, I hope you are using adblockers and similar tools.

Not in a million years could I survive datacaps. This is why it is a good thing to write websites as if they will be browsed on ISDN, a technology I used as late as 2005.

Why is internet connectivity great in Northern Europe, Korea and Japan, but bad in for example USA and many other Asian countries?

 No.547952

>80GB data cap

That is the catch you fucking idiot

I mean holy shit is this the normal for you and your country?

In America datacaps are unheard of outside of mobile 3/4G networks, I get 50mb/s internet with no caps for the same price you're paying. Maybe people think America has shit internet because they're all uneducated fucks like you who think it's okay to have datacaps on a home network

>What's the catch?

How can someone be so normalized to having their ISPs throttle your connection after using up 80 gigabytes (gigabits?)?

The concept is just so alien to me, as someone who lives in a decent country

I will pray for you OP

Population density makes infrastructure a lot cheaper to build and maintain. thats all there is too it really.

 No.548015

It's probably because of the way their local internet exchange point is set up. The sites and services you're allowed to use with faster access and no data caps likely have CDN nodes located there.

Often you can check out the site for your internet exchange point and see who is renting out servers there. Depending on how costs are dealt with it might cost your ISP less than nothing to offer this service.

hmmm

thanks, I think this is it. Also there are lots of new ISPs coming up with other ways to market like IP tvs and phones. So this >>547894 anon is probably correct too.

While I agree that 80GB is too less for you westerners, we only had broadband service since 2006. Before that everyone was using dialups. But we are getting there. I was using Wimax with 120 KBPS max speed with no datacap and that ISP was charging me the same amount. Yup, a 3rd world shithole. lol

Not for long, sadly datacaps will be the norm everywhere soon. Comcast and ATT both are implementing caps. They're my only options, dark times lay ahead

No. ATnT and Comcast both have data caps, i know for a fact.

Only in select areas, that all starts next year

>So what's the catch?

If they didn't do that, they wouldn't be able to get away with selling a 2 Mbps connection with an 80 GB data cap for $20 a month.

/pol/ likes to talk a big game about hanging degenerates and such but if there was a real day of the rope, the ISP CEOs would be first.

I read about the incoming earthquake in Washingtonpost, googled the nearest bomb shelter and then just sat there watching hulu from my apple iphone.
