(NEWSER)[1] – If you've been ignoring Amazon's prodding to update your Kindle, you may want to start paying attention. As Quartz[2] reports, any Kindle purchased before 2012 must be updated by Tuesday, March 22, in order to continue being able to connect to the Internet. If you miss the deadline, you'll lose access to books you've purchased and stored in Amazon's cloud, the ability to download new books, and more. You can still update after Tuesday, but the process is "more cumbersome," Quartz notes. Complete instructions and a list of impacted devices here[3].

INB4 anyone one says I/people in general should know better, I never would (or will as goes without saying) buy a Kindle the same way I would never smoke at a gas station but, I still consider it news if a gas station blows up on everyone.

I've got the mail today (frenchfag), and it's really creepy. Those bastards knows everything about what I read, even if I installed the Duokan OS on it (a chinese firmware for reading ePub).

Do people seriously do this?

Not trying to sound like a jackass either, I honestly didn't think anyone did.

My wife bought one last week for herself. It blew her mind when I explained to her that she couldn't just copy and paste the books from her old Nook over. Thankfully, it wasn't a hard problem to mitigate. Maybe one day I'll get through to her and we'll be an all-libre house...

Are there any flashable roms for the old kindle to circumvent this? I own a nook running cyanogenmod so this doesn't concern me but the fact that they can do this and get away with it is pretty scary.

I downloaded a fuckload of ebooks a long time ago, and I have no reader for them other than some shitty application for my phone, which, being a BlackBerry, is not built for fucking around. I was considering something along the lines of a Kindle, but now I know that Amazon is FUCK NO.
