Mine became broken when the cheap dollarstore usb hub I was using caused it to disconnect during writing of files to it. Somehow it corrupted the file system. Even the standard hard reset method doesn't work.
Can probably fix it by either installing rockbox or using the official update program as it is still recognized as a disk but haven't gotten around to it. Once it's fixed I'm only going to use microsd cards to transfer data to avoid this issue. Less wear on the port and built in flash memory as well, it should last at least a decade of use until the battery goes.
Anyone here that has one I'd recommend making a disk image. Had I done that this could have been dealt with in less than 5 minutes.

I also don't understand why there aren't any companies who want to swoop in and take sasnsa's market. I mean the clip feels like its from 2001, how fucking hard could it be to make something so similar, it's just plastic with an sd card reader and headphone jack, they could practically 3d print them for free.

IIRC NWavguy's measurements indicate it was better than the iPod of its generation, so it was best at its price, and at several times its price - just in terms of audio quality. Not even touching that it can play many more audio formats, has more features, battery life, etc. It is the best.

What you mean is it's not perfect. While the Fiios may have less distortion, they won't have the expandability, or the low weight, or the durability, etc., etc. For a portable media player, it is the "Best" High impedance BS headphones being used with portable players is for the most pathetic of autists who want their equipment to have a noise floor of - bullshit figures here - 10db when outside the noise floor is 30db. As for >>551004 , the better battery life is great, but battery life alone doesn't make it "better" it just changes the balance. Because it has that better battery life, it loses the rockbox port, and therefore the expandability and massive feature set.

>>551038
No one is going to make them with AA batteries any more. The best you can do is get a replaceable lion battery. Most of the time you can find them cheap, $5 to $10, and they cost significantly less than throwing AAs into the device.
You're going to have a hard time finding one that doesn't play video, but ARM chips have grown so efficient and battery tech has improved, that even looking at Cowon's site, a video capable player is looking at several days of continuous playback for battery life.

Listening to the same track on the same headphones in the same room with my portable surveillance device (Samsung Note 3) as a reference really illustrates how much greying-out happens with the phone DACs as they're swimming in the GHz noise of all of the other onboard electronics and radios. Well, I meant low power consumption overall so it could be powered from battery, not to mention that RPi and likes are huge. As far as I understand, there's no good solution for now without dipping your toes into electronics.

Some boards have a battery socket, and the manufacturers sell batteries for them. Best thing I can think of currently is:
Olimex LIME
Metal Olimex LIME LCD Case (not out yet)
Battery
Some wires and a headphone socket
Board and battery go in the case
Socket goes in a hole in the case, wire it to the headphone out pins on the board
Install Android, strip bloat
Use as a bulky Android phone
Only problem is that they only sell LCD cases with 7 inch screens, but it could work in a car system. Alternately 3d print a case and use one of those tiny OLED screens or something.

It's too bulky for a media player and I don't need android. I'm not exactly afraid of writing some C code for embedded but my general electronic skills are too poor. I guess it may be an excuse to gain some xp.

Unless you're actually comfortable with hardware you're best off using off-the-shelf parts. Finding an appropriate board and attachments will be a problem, you could try something like this if you don't mind a touchscreen.

Whatever you end up using don't expect it to be pretty.

What the fuck are you retards talking about?
DACs have been transparent for more than decades now.
It doesn't matter how good your phone's DAC is, it probably has high output impedance on the jack and no parametric equalizer.

Maybe for shitposting and listening to garbage when there's nothing else to use, but it's still shit and you damn well know it.

>when you can just buy a dedicated media machine that has better audio quality built in

They're mostly out of the game but you can still get phones with their OS and an actual physical keyboard. Doesn't fix the shit audio quality inherent in cell phones

It's actually not bad if you're not autismo like the phone shill. I'm using my old iPod as a bathroom radio because fuck what's on the real radio. Also because it's a good 10 years old and the battery is shit by this point so it needs to be plugged in all the time.

iPod Classic has always been the best. If you believe otherwise, you're delusional.
Honestly, it's one of the only thing apple has made that is decent.
Nothing yet has come out that can compare.

When MP3 players first came about I had a creatice zen nomad. Best shit ever. Worked like an external harddrive and you could actually remove songs off of it, removable battery, built like a tank, could preview songs while listening to songs, make playlists without being connected, had 30gb memory (which at the time was unheard of) and lasted me from 2004-2009. I wanted to get a the newer models, but by then apple ipods had pushed everything else out of the market. I couldn't even dirrect order a creative nomad from their website because they couldn't scale up production.
I use and ipod classic because if you want something that holds 100+gbs. I fucking hate apple. Funny thing is classic ipods no longer exist because everyone is moving to smartphones and touch screens. I miss my creative and I know its never comming back

do you have a 4GB version with FLAC? SD card + re-encodes to ogg/opus
justwerks for me
hold menu(down), go to song you want, select
only on big songs or really high bitrates does it lag for me
do you use stock? mine only crashes weirdly in car mode under rockbox
it's not a perfect PMP but spreading bullshit isn't helpful.

I've long since moved on to using my phone. It satisfies my own minimalistic pleasures to have a single device with multiple functions.
There just isn't room for a monotasker like an mp3 player anymore. ESPECIALLY not crowding up my pockets.

I see that cellular phones are very convenient. I would have got one, if not for certain reprehensible things about them. Cell phones are tracking and surveillance devices. They all enable the phone system to record where the user goes, and many (perhaps all) can be remotely converted into listening devices. In addition, most of them are computers with nonfree software installed. Even if they don't allow the user to replace the software, someone else can replace it remotely. Since the software can be changed, we cannot regard it as equivalent to a circuit. A machine that allows installation of software is a computer, and computers should run free software. Nearly every cell phone has a universal back door that allows remote conversion into a listening device. (See Murder in Samarkand, by Craig Murray, for an example.) This is as nasty as a device can get. From the book Alone Together, by Sherry Turkle, I learned that portable phones make many people's lives oppressive, because they feel compelled to spend all day receiving and responding to text messages which interrupt everything else. Perhaps my decision to reject this convenience for its deep injustice has turned out best in terms of convenience as well. When I need to call someone, I ask someone nearby to let me make a call. If I use someone else's cell phone, that doesn't give Big Brother any information about me.
