So I've done my fair share of lorefagging, but I'm still not quite sure of some of the finer points of what an elder scroll actually is.

>What exactly does it do other than produce prophecies?

It seems to be time related. In my most recent memory it is used by the dragonborn to project himself into the past. It was used by the Grey Fox to remove Nocturnals cowl, so it has some power over daedra? I don't remember what it was used for in Dawnguard but that it was involved.

>Where did they come from?

My best guess is that they emerged along with the shattering of the Aka-Tusk.

>What exactly does it do other than produce prophecies?

That's basically it. The Elder Scrolls are the physical manifestation of the timeline.

>Where did they come from?

Space Jesus.

I always figured that they are just extremely ambiguous in their writing. Meaning that the large symbols describe a specific conclusion while the small symbols describe how that conclusion is met.

But the small symbols are so ambiguous that every possible translation is equally likely to be the correct one. And their are an infinite number of possible translations. It is completely impossible to tell which one is correct until the conclusion actually comes to pass.

>What exactly does it do other than produce prophecies?

It doesn't produce prophecies, it is used in the same general manner that a normal scroll would be used for.

The Elder scrolls exist outside of time and record everything which occurs within time.

When someone reads a scroll they may come across a significant record from the future and perceive it as prophecy, but in truth, that event has already happened, just like everything else in time.

Like Zurin Arctus says;

>Each event is preceded by prophecy. But, without the hero, there is no event

>Where did they come from?

Magnus. They were originally formed from, what can assumed to be, the blueprints of the world.

Magnus feels remorse for abandoning Mundus and the Elder Scrolls are his way of looking back on the world. They are gathered and delivered to him by the Mnemoli during Dragon Breaks.

It's a command prompt for the universe. Do you wanna learn some forbidden knowledge? Know the future? Change history? Time travel? If the term "plot device" were a solid thing you could hold, it would be an Elder Scroll.

Probably Magnus' skin or something. It's hinted every once in a while that Magnus really fucked himself up leaving Mundus.
