Kowloon Walled City

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kowloon_Walled_City

Would make an interesting setting for a 1980s era PnP

Winding hallways, different languages, 1980s guns, 80s culture

Discuss

Tweak it and it's a hive from 40k. Take it in a different direction and you've got true 80's cyberpunk.

I always wanted to run a horror game set in Kowloon.

The players end up there for some reason, have to run away from a slasher villain and nobody gives enough of a shit to help them, Then supernatural shit starts happening as the seemingly endless hallways prove to be really endless, and they end up running into strange dimensions. And things from said dimensions start entering Kowloon.

Trapped in a dimension populated by dead figures that stay alive in the hearts and minds of the living, the PCs must flee a nameless terror that haunts the undying city of Kowloon. To fight is to invite death, to hide is to know despair. Their only option is to find a way out of the Walled City.

Kowloon was torn down, so Kowloon is literally a dead city. Makes sense for it to be a city populated by the dead in the underworld.

>uncontrolled building begins

No laws or rules.. only building…

That's a seed in and of itself. The idea that a city is growing out of control. The citizens don't even know why. They are just occasionally possessed with an uncontrollable urge to build more. Denser. Thicker. Higher.

Just. Keep. Building.

A nuclear weapon has been hidden in one of the many rooms by a cult that has armed itself. A team of Secret Agents/Special Forces/Gangsters have to go in and find it before it detonates.

Random encounters:

An old chinese couple. The female is cooking a stew. The male is sitting at the table. They are arguing on its quality, and approach the PC's for an opinion.

A workshop making Hello Kitty memorabilia, the workers also happen to be PCP addicts. The PCs will find themselves fighting a horde of strong unarmed men if they fail some important speech checks

An abandoned room. There are signs of a struggled and upon further investigation a blood stained threatening letter. Dated about a year ago it speaks of death if debt is not paid.

A small shop ran by an old man claiming to be a former IJA soldier. He can be persuaded to show a secret shop hidden behind a magazine shelf. It comprises of Jap WW2 guns. Mostly rifles, and LMGs. Of particular note are the keys to access a hidden IJA tank.

A large bar containing several white males. They are speaking Russian and appear to be SF. They can be allies, or enemies…

A small church. The priest has a hidden ladder that goes down 4 levels to a small safehouse. He will offer this accommodation in exchange for pamphlet distribution about Jesus.

A computer hacker hidden as a barber shop. Asking for "A hasselhoff special" gets you access to a hacker who can do just about anything.

I remember some old writefaggotry about something like that. A town obsessed with building stuff.

At first, it starts innocently enough. People decide to build up a monument of sorts in the middle of the town. Then they start building up their houses, adding new floors or whatnot. Then they go into debt trying to build up, and have to sell everything they have just so they can keep up building. When you ask them "why the fuck are you still doing this", they look at you like you're the mad one - after all, it's only natural to keep building.

Eventually the whole town looks like a maze of hallways, houses, and bizarre architecture - a stairway leading nowhere, a passageway through someone's bathroom, shit like that. And people completely lose any sense of personal space, just walking in and out of each others home, or going through the living room completely naked, or having fun in your kitchen. Everyone shares everything, and the whole town is a hive.

Then they start tearing down everything they built, and pool their resources near the middle of the town. They begin building a giant chimney from everything they have. The woodwork, the steel, their cars, bikes, kitchen utensils - everything - is brought before the giant chimney and thrown into it. And the ramshackle structure somehow keeps standing, despite how common sense dictates it shouldn't.

And it just. Keeps. Growing.

When there's nothing left but the giant chimney, and the surrounding area is a complete wasteland, something huge erupts from it. A figure of ash and smoke, whose wings cover the entire sky, opens its arms in a welcoming embrace. The people start climbing the chimney, and when they reach the top they jump into it. Women, children, elderly - everyone somehow has the strength to climb the eldritch structure. After the last person goes in. the creature flies off into the sky and the chimney collapses.

When the cops finally arrive at the village, all they find is garbage. In the middle of the wasteland, where the chimney stood, is a strange empty space. The only place in town not touched by trash. And the place where the bodies of all the people who jumped into it should be. But there's nothing there - no bodies, nothing.

Then the next town starts building, and the cycle repeats.

That heavily reminds me of some of that sweet Junji Ito manga, namely *The City Without Streets*. Creepy as shit and just utterly amazing.

 No.210622

>>210621

I think that was part of the inspiration.

The other was a similar thread to this, where people discussed strange and creepy cities. There was a city that never stops growing, a city that somehow rearranges itself to keep you in, the Spiral City from Uzumaki, and shit like that.

moar encounters

Several foreign operatives have been staying in a motel ran by Mr. Chang

Mr Chang wants these guys gone.

A schoolhouse that doubles as drug shop has been recently raided. The PCs are faced with ethical dilemmas involving drug trade vs the chillins, as the drug money pays for the school

but also the milfy teacher's gambling addiction

The plumbing for a building has failed, the basement contains the problem. The locals are superstitious about something that happened there during the war. The PCs might ought to be too.

A large cache of explosives left by the Japanese is found within a buddhist temple. Now three gangs are squabbling over who gets it, however none wish to simply storm the temple and take the shit. Thats real bad juju, so they are all trying to get the PCs to get the explosives for them. Be it fighting through some monks, or persuading them. Or perhaps sneaking in and out.

A civilian helicopter lands on a rooftop and drops off 2 people. Turns out to be a sniper team. They assassinate a gang boss and end up accidentally triggering a brewing gang war. The PCs can either avert this by stopping the team (a difficult event akin to a boss battle) or work around the consequences. Could be a mid-campaign quest that shakes up the setting.

A new j-pop star has gotten really popular recently. One powerful drug lord in the city REALLY REALLY likes her (banana.jpg) so he has her kidnapped. A modern oriental twist on the old "SAVE THE PRINCESS" quest. She is difficult, ditzy, and scared. Its an escort quest.

A warlord from [Insert Shitty African Nation Here] is hiding in the city. The Chinese are offering 500k for him, alive. They want to re-instate him. The Americans are offering 400k for him dead. An unknown private individual is offering 1 million for his twin brother to be swapped in his place.

One obvious problem with this setup is that the whole place would go up like a torch at the first opportunity.

It's cramped enough that something will catch fire at the first stove mishap and there seems to be enough of cloth, plastic and other crap everywhere that once it starts, it spreads in all directions at once.

Did they have indoor toilets? I can't seem to figure this out. If they did it must have been very rare like 1 per floor over a large area or something?

 No.215599

>>215121

Given the cramped living quarters, I imagine designated shitting buckets and water stored in containers would be the closest thing to indoor plumbing.

 No.221164

>>215599

Since a lot of it was built before the government lost control, I'd imagine there would be preexisting plumbing in much of the city, and there was some form of running water, but whether it actually worked well enough to be practically used I don't know, but I certainly feel like there would be a lot of shitting in buckets.

My nigga.

Wanted to do an UA or oMage campaign that's heavily influenced by Kowloon. One insane architect designs a building with twisting hallways, wall patterns that drive people insane, and other subtle mindfucks like that. The guy calls it a piece of art, and people all over the world come to see his buildings.

Thing is, the guy is looking for the mystical mount Qaf, and the Kowloon-inspired buildings are actually gateways to it. It's rumored that you can reach to anywhere, anyplace if you get lost in the hallways. People wandering the building at night might even end up transported to another continent, only to appear in a dingy basement or other room.

And now, something from somewhere came here. And it's angry.

 No.228511

>>215043

And even if it's somehow protected from spreading fires in general, given this population density and dubious air circulation, a fire on some hippie weed greenhouse could affect a large area.
